Tension wood that is an abnormal part formed in angiosperms has been barely used for wood industry. In this study, to utilize the tension wood effectively by means of liquefaction using ionic liquid, we performed morphological and topochemical determination of the changes in tension wood of Japanese beech (Fagus crenata) during ionic liquid treatment at the cellular level using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and confocal Raman microscopy. Ionic liquid treatment induced cell wall swelling in tension wood. Changes in the tissue morphology treated with ionic liquids were different between normal wood and tension wood, moreover the types of ionic liquids. The ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride liquefied gelatinous layers rapidly, whereas 1-ethylpyridinium bromide liquefied slowly but delignified selectively. These novel insights into the deconstruction behavior of tension wood cell walls during ionic liquid treatment provide better understanding of the liquefaction mechanism. The obtained knowledge will contribute to development of an effective chemical processing of tension wood using ionic liquids and lead to efficient use of wood resources. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Alkaline aerobic oxidation of native softwood lignin in the presence of Na+-cyclic polyether complexes

Takashi Hosoya, Kei Kawase, Yuki Hirano, Mizuki Ikeuchi, Hisashi Miyafuji

Summary: The study investigated the production of vanillin from native softwood lignin in Japanese cedar using cyclic polyethers in NaOH solution, and found that the addition of 15-crown-5 significantly increased the yield of vanillin, unlike its non-cyclic analog. This suggests effective control of aerobic oxidation by large size cationic species and demonstrates the potential for selective production of vanillin through alkaline aerobic oxidation.

Production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural from Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) in an ionic liquid, 1-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate

Ryoya Ito, Hisashi Miyafuji

Summary: The production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) from Japanese cedar using an ionic liquid, 1-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate ([MIM]HSO4), was studied. Among the three reaction systems investigated, the one combining [MIM]HSO4 treatment with vacuum steam distillation proved to be the most effective, achieving a maximum yield of 17.5 wt% after 45 minutes at 160 degrees C. This method is suitable for 5-HMF production as it is a one-pot process without the need for catalysts or pretreatment.

Morphology and ultrastructure of the colleterial glands in Myzinum flower wasps (Tiphiidae, Hymenoptera)

Summary: This article describes the secretory glands in females of two species of Myzinum and discusses their homology with other glands in the Hymenoptera order. The study finds that the three glands, instead of the commonly believed two, are present in Myzinum species. However, the limited research on the structure, function, and evolution of female accessory glands in Hymenoptera prevents conclusive statements.

Summary: This study confirmed the secretion of nano-scale exosomes-multivesicular bodies and the interaction of high endothelial cells (HECs) with lysosomes and mitochondria in the small intestine of laying birds. Immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence results showed the strong immunoreactivity of exosome-related proteins and autophagic-related proteins in the lamina propria of the small intestine. These findings reveal an innovative communication method among HECs in the small intestine.

Summary: This study developed composite layers based on magnesium-doped hydroxyapatite and chitosan, and demonstrated their good biocompatibility and antifungal effects against osteosarcoma cells. The attachment and growth of the cells on the composite layers were promoted, while the growth of Candida albicans was inhibited. The morphological analysis revealed complex 3D patterns on the cancer cell surfaces on the magnesium-containing composite layers.
