Mixtures of siccative oil and Pinaceae resin were among the most widespread formulations used for varnishing in the 16th-18th centuries. The aim of this research is to study the molecular composition of different formulations of varnishes based on linseed oil and colophony. The mixtures were prepared by cooking both raw materials in different proportions, following the outlines of historical recipes gathered in treatises and manuscripts from that period. Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) evidenced the presence of numerous oligomeric compounds from linseed oil and colophony. Analysis using Electrospray-Quadrupole-Time of Flight mass spectrometer (ESI-Q-ToF) allowed the characterization of oligomeric compounds from colophony. In particular, structures of dimeric diterpenic acid units attached by ester, ether, anhydride or keto linkage are proposed. Concerning linseed oil, oxidized and chain-shortened triglycerides were characterized with High Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled with Electrospray-Quadrupole-Time of Flight mass spectrometer (HPLC-ESI-Q-ToF). SEC quantitation of compounds allowed us to assess the influence of the oil to colophony ratio on the molecular composition of the varnishes: oil polymerization appears to be minimized in favor of its hydrolysis in presence of colophony, whereas linseed oil seems to inhibit the formation of diterpenic dimers and trimers. In addition, analyses evidence the reaction of diterpenic acids with linseed oil compounds. In particular, we identified hybrid molecules formed by a diglyceride and a diterpenic acid. Addition products of a of a triglyceride and a diterpenic acid may also be present in the mixtures. These results bring new information about the molecular composition of varnishes made from linseed oil and colophony, and will improve the knowledge of historical varnishes. To this purpose, all analytical protocols were implemented on micro-samples so that they could be applied later on ancient artifacts. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ultrasonic microrheology for ex vivo skin explants monitoring: A proof of concept

Vincent Gauthier, Alice Lemarquand, Emmanuel Caplain, Nicolas Wilkie-Chancellier, Stephane Serfaty

Summary: In response to alternative non-animal testing, biosensors specifically designed for monitoring ex vivo skin explants present a challenge in studying physiological-like behavior and optimizing new topical products. The article introduces a proof-of-concept biosensor that couples a thickness shear-mode transducer with human skin explants, allowing for monitoring the viscoelastic properties of the skin. A mechanical model based on fractional calculus is used to extract complex shear modulus and microstructural evolutions. Preliminary results demonstrate the sensor's sensitivity in probing skin viscoelasticity in a life-like state and the effects of culture medium, as well as the identification of mechanical breaches in the skin barrier after the use of peeling products.

Soft Matter Characterization From Ultrasonic Microrheology and Fractional Calculus

Vincent Gauthier, Emmanuel Caplain, Stephane Serfaty, Magalie Michiel, Pascal Griesmar, Nicolas Wilkie-Chancellier

Summary: This paper presents a multifrequency technique to investigate the evolution of soft matter at mesoscopic scale and its relationships with other scales. A TMS resonator is used as an ultrasonic microrheometer to measure mechanical impedance and monitor the effective viscosity and internal structure simultaneously. The technique is validated with different complex materials, and the extracted structural parameter can be linked to fractal dimension.

Archaeology of the invisible: The scent of Kha and Merit

Jacopo La Nasa, Ilaria Degano, Francesca Modugno, Camilla Guerrini, Federica Facchetti, Valentina Turina, Andrea Carretta, Christian Greco, Enrico Ferraris, Maria Perla Colombini, Erika Ribechini

Summary: The burial assemblage of Kha and Merit discovered in 1906 and now preserved at the Museo Egizio constitutes the most abundant, complete, and well-preserved non-royal Egyptian burial assemblage ever found. A study shows that volatile compounds emitted by organic materials in vessels can be analyzed and detected directly in museums using a transportable mass spectrometer. This research proves the reliability of this method for archaeometric investigations in museums.

Mesoscopic Monitoring of Human Skin Explants Viscoelastic Properties

Alice Lemarquand, Vincent Gauthier, Nicolas Wilkie-Chancellier, Stephane Serfaty

Summary: Investigating the mechanical properties of skin is important for monitoring changes in cutaneous barrier function. Skin is a complex tissue with viscoelastic properties. A biosensor with a thickness shear mode transducer (TSM) was used to characterize the mechanical properties of ex vivo skin. The biosensor was validated and a signature of the viscoelastic evolutions of different skin layers was identified. Monitoring was also conducted on stripped skin explants mimicking a weakened barrier function.

Summary: Biodegradable polymers offer a potential solution to plastic pollution, but assessing their degradation process and chemical composition is crucial. This study used Py-GC-MS and EGA-MS techniques to analyze the thermal degradation profiles, main m/z ions, and pyrolysis markers of different biodegradable polymers and commercial products. The presence of additives and impurities was also identified. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the degradation process and chemical composition of biodegradable polymers in the environment.

Summary: Many museums have been producing reproductions to replace weakened artworks exhibited outdoors. French consortium Reunion des Musees Nationaux-Grand Palais works with composite materials to imitate the original aesthetic, however, these reproductions also age and deteriorate due to outdoor exposure. This study aims to analyze the resin/mineral powder composite materials used in cultural heritage reproduction and propose nondestructive evaluation techniques for monitoring the structural health of large-format artwork.

Summary: The dielectric properties of tissues play a significant role in detecting and monitoring pathologies. This paper proposes the use of TLR sensors to non-invasively sense changes in organic tissues and monitor their dielectric properties. Experimental results demonstrate the ability of TLR sensors to detect and discriminate between different soft matter samples. Multi-frequency investigation also enhances tissue characterization. TLR sensors are therefore promising for non-invasive, low-cost, and sensitive monitoring of pathologies.

Dispersive micro-solid phase extraction based on graphene oxide for the ultrasensitive determination of Cd by slurry sampling microplasma optical emission spectrometry

Summary: For the first time, a dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (D-mu SPE) based on graphene oxide was used for the ultrasensitive determination of Cd. With this method, Cd can be efficiently extracted from a mixture of alkali and alkaline earth metals without the need for an elution step. The combination of D-mu SPE and SAGD OES significantly reduces matrix effects and improves the tolerance of Cd to alkali metals. The method shows simplicity in the measurement system and the commercially available nanosorbent used.
