Features of digitally captured signatures vs. pen and paper signatures: Similar or completely different?

J. Heckeroth, E. Kupferschmid, T. Dziedzic, N. Kalantzis, B. Geistova Cakovska, C. Fernandes, M. J. Branco, K. Axelsson Spjuth, A. Kerkhoff, P. Vaccarone, J. Zimmer, P. Schmidt

Summary: This study investigated the differences between digitally captured signatures and conventional pen and paper signatures, finding minor discrepancies in character shape and pen lifts between the two types of signatures. However, these differences were deemed to have no significant impact on the practical comparability by forensic handwriting examiners. Statistical analysis also showed significant differences between the three signature types, but with minor effect sizes.

Awake intraoperative mapping to identify cortical regions related to music performance: Technical note

Tomasz A. Dziedzic, Aleksandra Bala, Anna Podgorska, Jolanta Piwowarska, Andrzej Marchel

Summary: This manuscript presents an intraoperative technique for assessing musical performance ability and reports positive cortical sites related to music performance. It also highlights a case where awake procedures benefited a musician undergoing surgery for a brain lesion, showing how stimulation of specific brain areas can disrupt high-level cognitive tasks such as music performance.

Recommendations for capturing signatures digitally to optimize their suitability for forensic handwriting examination

Barbora Geistova Cakovska, Nikolaos Kalantzis, Tomasz Dziedzic, Carina Fernandes, Jan Zimmer, Maria Joao Branco, Jonathan Heckeroth, Kristofer Axelsson Spjuth, Erich Kupferschmid, Paolo Vaccarone, Axel Kerkoff

Summary: This paper presents recommendations aimed at defining best practices in forensic examination of digitally captured signatures, mainly targeted at hardware and software developers, providers, and user institutions. Following these recommendations ensures the suitability of signature data for forensic handwriting examination, increasing the reliability of associated electronic documents.

Magnetisation transfer imaging revealed microstructural changes related to apathy symptoms after ischaemic stroke

Elzbieta Klimiec-Moskal, Paulina Karcz, Katarzyna Kowalska, Agnieszka Slowik, Izabela Herman-Sucharska, Tomasz Dziedzic

Summary: Poststroke apathy is common and has a negative impact on functional recovery. Changes in microstructural integrity in the brain areas related to processing emotional information and reward valuation were found to be associated with poststroke apathy symptoms in the study.

Lipopolysaccharide binding protein and sCD14 as risk markers of stroke-associated pneumonia

Elzbieta Gradek-Kwinta, Mateusz Czyzycki, Anna Maria Lopatkiewicz, Elzbieta Klimiec-Moskal, Agnieszka Slowik, Tomasz Dziedzic

Summary: This study evaluated the utility of LBP and sCD14 as risk markers for stroke-associated pneumonia, finding that higher levels of LBP, but not sCD14, were associated with SAP. However, adding these biomarkers to the clinical model did not improve its discriminatory ability, suggesting modest value for SAP prediction.

Anatomical aspects of the insula, opercula and peri-insular white matter for a transcortical approach to insular glioma resection

Tomasz Andrzej Dziedzic, Aleksandra Bala, Andrzej Marchel

Summary: This study provides an anatomical description of the insula and white matter tracts related to surgical treatment of gliomas through a transcortical approach. The study highlights the importance of detailed knowledge of the anatomy exposed through each operculum in preoperative planning and intraoperative decision-making, particularly in terms of intraoperative brain mapping.

T. A. Dziedzic, A. Bala, A. Balasa, A. Olejnik, A. Marchel

Summary: This study investigates the anatomical perspectives of the occipital lobe in addressing intracranial temporal lobe epilepsy surgery, to assess surgical risks and extent of resection, particularly regarding visual field deficits.

Subtemporal Approach and Its Infratentorial Extension: Review and a Comparative Analysis of Different Techniques

Tomasz Andrzej Dziedzic, Kumar Abhinav, Juan C. Fernandez-Miranda

Summary: This study aims to describe the anatomy and surgical approaches to the tentorial incisura and to the rostral brainstem via the intradural subtemporal approach and its infratentorial extensions. The results show that the linear or triangular tentorial divisions can provide access to the infratentorial space below the pontomesencephalic sulcus, but the triangular tentorial flap obstructs the exposure of the anterior incisural space and the prepontine cistern. Visualization of the brainstem below the trigeminal nerve can be achieved by the anterior petrosectomy.

Serum C-reactive protein adds predictive information for post-stroke delirium: The PROPOLIS study

Elzbieta Klimiec-Moskal, Agnieszka Slowik, Tomasz Dziedzic

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether the addition of CRP to a clinical prediction model improves the accuracy of delirium prediction in acute stroke patients. The results showed that adding CRP improved the discrimination and reclassification of the models, suggesting that CRP could be a potential biomarker for stratifying the risk of delirium after stroke.

Attention and working memory in patients with prolactinomas: a case-control study

Aleksandra Bala, Tomasz Dziedzic, Agnieszka Olejnik, Andrzej Marchel

Summary: Patients with prolactinomas exhibit impaired cognitive functions, including attention and working memory. Comprehensive neuropsychological assessment should be an integral part of the diagnostics for this group of patients.

Cortical and white matter anatomy relevant for the lateral and superior approaches to resect intraaxial lesions within the frontal lobe

Tomasz Andrzej Dziedzic, Aleksandra Bala, Artur Balasa, Agnieszka Olejnik, Andrzej Marchel

Summary: This study provides a neurosurgical perspective on the anatomy of the frontal lobe and offers insights into the surgical treatment of frontal lobe lesions. The identification of the highly eloquent cortex within the frontal lobe is crucial for preoperative planning and predicting postoperative deficits.

Long-Term Management of Seizures after Surgical Treatment of Supratentorial Cavernous Malformations : A Retrospective Single Centre Study

Tomasz A. Dziedzic, Kacper Koczyk, Arkadiusz Nowak, Edyta Maj, Andrzej Marchel

Summary: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the factors associated with postoperative seizure control and surgical morbidity rate in patients with supratentorial cerebral cavernous malformation (CCM) and epilepsy. The results showed that surgery can effectively control seizures and has a low risk of postoperative complications. Therefore, surgical resection of CCM should be considered in these patients.
