Summary: Cascabela thevetia, a well-known plant used in traditional medicine, contains highly toxic glycosides, necessitating an assessment of cytotoxicity/mutagenicity for therapeutic efficacy. The aqueous leaf and fruit extract of the plant were found to be significantly cytotoxic at certain concentrations, indicating caution in therapeutic applications.

Summary: This study evaluated the dose-dependent cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of clopyralid on Allium cepa roots, showing that clopyralid affects root growth and induces chromosome abnormalities at different concentrations. These results confirm the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of clopyralid on non-target organisms.

Summary: The study found that the binary mixture of titanium dioxide nanoparticles and tetracycline significantly increased cytotoxicity in plants, especially under UVA pre-irradiation. It also showed that both compounds had genotoxic potential in Allium cepa, leading to different chromosomal abnormalities.

Summary: This systematic review focused on the effect of insecticides on the Allium cepa system. The meta-analytical test showed that insecticide treatment increased the number of micronuclei in onion cells and reduced the mitotic index. More studies on biotechnology, nanotechnology, and biopesticides are needed to develop safer pesticides.

Summary: This study assessed the cytogenotoxic effect of untreated and methyl orange treated on Allium cepa roots. It was found that roots exposed to treated dye solution had higher root growth, root length, and mitotic index, while roots exposed to untreated dye solution showed higher mitotic inhibition and chromosomal abnormalities. The research can be used as a biomarker to detect the genotoxic effects of textile dyes on biota.

Summary: The composition of the media has a significant impact on the assessment of lanthanides ecotoxicology. In media with phosphorous, toxic effects are reduced or even root elongation can be stimulated; while in media lacking phosphorous, lanthanides can induce toxic effects.

Summary: The study found that PFOS has significant cytotoxic and genotoxic effects on Allium cepa root meristem cells. As the concentration increases, cell division decreases and chromosomal aberrations increase. This is the first study to investigate the cyto-genotoxic potential of PFOS in higher plants.

Summary: This study evaluated the cytotoxic and genotoxic potential of Lantana fucata extracts and characterized them chemically. The results showed that the extracts had cytotoxic effects, especially the hydroalcoholic extract. Chromatography analysis revealed a higher abundance of flavonoids and triterpenoids in the hydroalcoholic extract, suggesting that these compounds may be responsible for its greater toxicity. Therefore, moderate consumption of L. fucata is suggested.

Summary: Bisphenol S (BPS) is a substitute of bisphenol A and widely used in various products. This study evaluated the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of BPS on onion root meristematic cells. The results showed that BPS inhibited root growth, reduced mitotic index, and caused chromosomal aberrations and DNA damage.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of Allium cepa based cyto-genotoxicity bioassays in assessing arsenic toxicity and remediation potential of Pteris vittata in contaminated soil. Results showed that P. vittata extracted high concentrations of arsenic from different soils and had lower cyto-genotoxic effects compared to untreated soil. This study provides a simple and economic tool for evaluating the toxicity of contaminated soils and highlights the phytoremediation property of P. vittata against arsenic toxicity.
