Summary: This study aims to identify possible gender differences in social factors and established risk factors preceding myocardial infarction (MI). The study found that in women, serious life events, strained economy, depression, stress, and sleep deprivation were stronger potential risk factors for myocardial infarction compared to men. Only hyperlipidemia was found to be more frequent among women.

Summary: The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the survival chain of cardiac arrest patients was significant. This study analyzed the data of cardiac arrest admissions in the United States in 2020 and found that patients with concomitant COVID-19 had a higher risk of complications such as acute kidney injury, prolonged mechanical ventilation, and sepsis. However, they had lower rates of cardiogenic shock, ventricular tachycardia, and ventricular fibrillation, as well as a lower utilization of cardiac procedures. In-hospital mortality was also higher in patients with COVID-19, and COVID-19 diagnosis was an independent predictor of mortality.

Summary: Preventive statin therapy in the elderly reduces the risk of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and has benefits in mortality, regardless of the presence of hypercholesterolemia history. This effect persists after the age of 76 years, but the benefits are less pronounced in women.

Summary: This study examined the association between sex, prior cardiovascular disease (CVD), and 30-day mortality in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients. The results showed that while both women and patients with prior CVD had an increased risk of 30-day mortality, there was a significant interaction between sex and CVD. Among patients with prior CVD, women had a lower risk of mortality compared to men, while there was no significant difference in patients without CVD.

Summary: The study found that after brief periods of cardiac ischemia, both high-sensitive cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI) and high-sensitive cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) increased similarly. However, longer periods of ischemia that caused substantial necrosis led to an increase in the hs-cTnI/hs-cTnT ratio, indicating that this ratio may be an indicator of ischemia-induced myocardial necrosis.

Summary: The latest international guidelines recommend using high-sensitivity methods to measure cTnI and cTnT for the detection of myocardial injury and differential diagnosis of acute coronary syndromes. Discrepancies between hs-cTnI and hs-cTnT levels can be found in patients with neuromuscular diseases, and sometimes even in individuals without cardiac diseases, emphasizing the importance of considering clinical history and other test results.

Summary: This nationwide population-based cohort study conducted in Taiwan found a significant association between cigarette smoking and poor survival in patients with colorectal cancer. Smoking patients had a higher mortality risk compared to nonsmoking patients, particularly those who smoked 11-20 cigarettes per day or smoked for more than 30 years. The effects of smoking were more pronounced in male patients and those with colon cancer.

Summary: This study found that individuals with ocular allergic conditions are more likely to have Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy (FED) in Taiwan. The study also found that in Taiwan, more than half of the FED patients were aged ≥ 45 years old and there was an equal female-to-male ratio. Patients with lower income and living in northern Taiwan had higher odds of developing FED.

Summary: In Taiwan, the implementation of nonpharmaceutical interventions during the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in changes in the epidemiology of respiratory pathogens. This study investigated the dynamic changes in respiratory pathogens in children in 2020 and found that certain viruses showed a decrease in detection rate with strengthened restrictions, while nonenveloped viruses remained in circulation.

Summary: This study suggests that radiomics analysis of intraparenchymal hemorrhage on initial CT images has the potential to predict hemorrhagic progression of contusion (HPC) and poor neurologic outcome in traumatic intraparenchymal hemorrhage (IPH) patients. The combined model of clinical variables and radiomics scores improves the predictive performance of HPC.

Summary: The study found that the clinical symptoms of patients with metformin-associated lactic acidosis (MALA) admitted to the ICU were mainly related to the head, chest, and abdomen, and the distribution of peak lactate level (PLL) was influenced by factors such as age, APACHE II score, nadir arterial bicarbonate level, treatment modalities, and mortality. After adjusting for age and gender, significant predictors of mortality in MALA patients were APACHE II score, PLL, vasoactive support, ventilator support, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
