Although numerous studies have investigated gender-related differences in patients who have had an acute myocardial infarction (AMI), few studies have examined the gender-related differences among inpatients receiving Phase I inpatient cardiac rehabilitation following AMI. Using data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, this study analyzed 6713 adult patients who received inpatient cardiac rehabilitation following AMI between 2002 and 2011. The differences in comorbidity, medical service use, and prognosis between the male and female patients were analyzed to determine whether the comorbidities affecting their prognoses differed. Female patients accounted for 23.18% of the sample, had a higher average age, and exhibited severe comorbidities; furthermore, they had significantly more days of hospitalization and days in an intensive care unit than did male patients. The gender-related differences in hospital mortality rate and 30-day mortality rate were nonsignificant, but female patients exhibited a significantly higher 1-year mortality rate. Moreover, the risk for 1-year mortality was higher among female patients with moderate or severe renal disease (odds ratio: 1.94, 95% confidence interval: 1.29-2.92) than among their male counterparts. However, the 1-year mortality rate for the female patients did not increase after all risk factors were adjusted. Gender-related differences in age, comorbidity, and prognosis were confirmed in AMI patients receiving Phase I inpatient cardiac rehabilitation. In addition, gender-related differences were observed in the comorbidity risk factors affecting prognosis. However, being female did not affect the prognosis.

Cigarette Smoking Associated with Colorectal Cancer Survival: A Nationwide, Population-Based Cohort Study

Yu-Min Huang, Po-Li Wei, Chung-Han Ho, Chih-Ching Yeh

Summary: This nationwide population-based cohort study conducted in Taiwan found a significant association between cigarette smoking and poor survival in patients with colorectal cancer. Smoking patients had a higher mortality risk compared to nonsmoking patients, particularly those who smoked 11-20 cigarettes per day or smoked for more than 30 years. The effects of smoking were more pronounced in male patients and those with colon cancer.

The Sociodemographic and Risk Factors for Fuchs' Endothelial Dystrophy: A Nationwide, Matched Case-Control Study in Taiwan

Yuh-Shin Chang, Chung-Han Ho, Jhi-Joung Wang, Sung-Huei Tseng, Ren-Long Jan

Summary: This study found that individuals with ocular allergic conditions are more likely to have Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy (FED) in Taiwan. The study also found that in Taiwan, more than half of the FED patients were aged ≥ 45 years old and there was an equal female-to-male ratio. Patients with lower income and living in northern Taiwan had higher odds of developing FED.

Summary: In Taiwan, the implementation of nonpharmaceutical interventions during the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in changes in the epidemiology of respiratory pathogens. This study investigated the dynamic changes in respiratory pathogens in children in 2020 and found that certain viruses showed a decrease in detection rate with strengthened restrictions, while nonenveloped viruses remained in circulation.

Prediction of Intraparenchymal Hemorrhage Progression and Neurologic Outcome in Traumatic Brain Injury Patients Using Radiomics Score and Clinical Parameters

Yun-Ju Shih, Yan-Lin Liu, Jeon-Hor Chen, Chung-Han Ho, Cheng-Chun Yang, Tai-Yuan Chen, Te-Chang Wu, Ching-Chung Ko, Jonathan T. Zhou, Yang Zhang, Min-Ying Su

Summary: This study suggests that radiomics analysis of intraparenchymal hemorrhage on initial CT images has the potential to predict hemorrhagic progression of contusion (HPC) and poor neurologic outcome in traumatic intraparenchymal hemorrhage (IPH) patients. The combined model of clinical variables and radiomics scores improves the predictive performance of HPC.

Chien-Cheng Huang, Tzu-Hao Chen, Chung -Han Ho, Yi-Chen Chen, Rong-Jane Chen, Ying-Jan Wang, Chien -Chin Hsu, Hung -Jung Lin, Jhi-Joung Wang, Ching -Ping Chang, How-Ran Guo

Summary: This study investigated the effects of CO poisoning on the development of diabetes and on existing diabetes through epidemiologic analyses and animal experiments. The results showed that CO poisoning increased the risks of diabetes and hyperglycemic crisis, which may be attributable to damages in the pancreas and hypothalamus.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between smoking status and mortality risk in women with breast cancer. The results showed that smoking was significantly associated with an increased risk of overall and cancer-specific mortality in breast cancer patients. The findings underscore the importance of smoking cessation for women with breast cancer.

Clinical presentations and prognosis of metformin-associated lactic acidosis patients in the intensive care unit: A 20-year survey

Chun-Chieh Yang, Shih-Feng Weng, Kuei-Ling Tseng, Chung-Han Ho

Summary: The study found that the clinical symptoms of patients with metformin-associated lactic acidosis (MALA) admitted to the ICU were mainly related to the head, chest, and abdomen, and the distribution of peak lactate level (PLL) was influenced by factors such as age, APACHE II score, nadir arterial bicarbonate level, treatment modalities, and mortality. After adjusting for age and gender, significant predictors of mortality in MALA patients were APACHE II score, PLL, vasoactive support, ventilator support, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
