Malgorzata Kaczkan, Sylwia Czaja-Stolc, Malgorzata Szczuko, Arleta Drozd, Przemyslaw Rutkowski, Alicja Debska-Slizien, Sylwia Malgorzewicz

Summary: The concentration of water-soluble vitamins is often not measured in hemodialysis patients, leading to undiagnosed deficiencies. This study compared the blood concentration of water-soluble vitamins in hemodialysis patients with healthy subjects and assessed the impact of diabetes mellitus on these vitamins. The study found significantly lower levels of vitamin B-1, B-6, and B-12 in the hemodialysis group.

Analysis of Fecal Short-Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs) in Healthy Children during the First Two Years of Life: An Observational Prospective Cohort Study

Beata Loniewska, Magda Fraszczyk-Tousty, Piotr Tousty, Karolina Skonieczna-Zydecka, Dominika Maciejewska-Markiewicz, Igor Loniewski

Summary: This study analyzed 456 fecal samples from 86 children to investigate the influence of perinatal factors on the concentrations of fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) during the first two years of life. The results showed that SCFA concentrations increased until 12 months and then stabilized. Factors such as antibiotic treatment during pregnancy, mode of delivery, feeding formula, and maternal weight gain were found to be associated with changes in SCFA concentrations. Higher SCFA levels were observed in infants born to mothers with normal pre-pregnancy weight and adequate weight gain. Additionally, female infants had higher levels of acetic acid at 2 years old. The study suggests the need for further long-term epidemiological studies in this area.

Smoking Affects the Post-Stroke Inflammatory Response of Lipid Mediators in a Gender-Related Manner

Arleta Drozd, Dariusz Kotlega, Krzysztof Dmytrow, Malgorzata Szczuko

Summary: The main aim of this study was to investigate the impact of cigarette smoking on selected derivatives of arachidonic acid, linoleic acid, DHA, and EPA, which may serve as markers for post-stroke inflammation. The eicosanoid profile was compared between smokers and non-smokers, both with and without gender division. The results revealed that non-smokers had higher levels of the linolenic acid derivative (LA) 9S HODE than smokers. However, when the results were further divided by gender, it was found that non-smoking women had higher levels of this derivative compared to smoking women, while no difference was observed in the group of men. Similarly, the level of the arachidonic acid metabolite LTX A4 differed only in the group of women. Moreover, a number of statistically significant correlations were identified between the analyzed groups, with smokers showing fewer correlations compared to non-smokers. This study highlights the importance of smoking cessation in reducing inflammation mediated by lipid mediators in both genders.

Dominika Maciejewska-Markiewicz, Joanna Kochman, Karolina Jakubczyk, Piotr Bargiel, Zbigniew Szlosser, Ewa Stachowska, Marta Markowska, Anna Bucka, Norbert Czapla, Jan Petriczko, Anna Surowka, Sonia Hertman, Piotr Puchalski, Piotr Prowans

Summary: This study aimed to assess the concentration of vitamin D and its metabolites in patients before thyroidectomy. The results showed that patients undergoing thyroidectomy have a marked vitamin D deficiency, which may affect their subsequent convalescence and prognosis. Therefore, determining vitamin D levels prior to thyroidectomy may be useful for considering supplementation in the clinical management of these patients.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: What Do We Know in 2023?

Anna Gudan, Katarzyna Kozlowska-Petriczko, Ewa Wunsch, Tomasz Bodnarczuk, Ewa Stachowska

Summary: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic liver disease characterized by lipid accumulation in the liver. Insulin resistance is common among NAFLD patients. Obesity is a major risk factor for lipid accumulation, but normal-weight individuals can also develop NAFLD. Obesity, with or without NAFLD, is associated with a higher incidence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), while NAFLD patients also show increased intestinal permeability. SIBO can lead to malabsorption disorders and impair liver function, but more research is needed to understand its impact on liver dysfunction, intestinal barrier integrity, inflammation, endotoxemia, and bacterial translocation.

Increased Demand of Obese Women for Protectins, Maresin, and Resolvin D1 in the Last Trimester of Pregnancy

Malgorzata Szczuko, Natalia Szwec-Nadworna, Joanna Palma, Malgorzata Tomasik, Maciej Zietek

Summary: Inflammation occurs during pregnancy, and the levels of anti-inflammatory resolvins and their precursors vary in different trimesters and in relation to pre-pregnancy weight groups. Overweight or obese women have lower levels of anti-inflammatory resolvins, possibly due to lower intake of omega-3 fatty acids and increased need to alleviate chronic inflammation.
