A topologically novel [2]rota[2]catenane containing both a pillar[5]arene-imidazolium based [2]rotaxane subunit and a crown ether-tetracationic cyclophane [CBPQT](4+) based [2]catenane one was designed and constructed. The structure of the [2]rota[2]catenane was thoroughly characterized by NMR spectra, MS spectrometry and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

ortho-Functionalization of Pillar[5]arene: An Approach to Mono-ortho-Alkyl/Aryl-Substituted A1/A2-Dihydroxypillar[5]arene

Zhuo Wang, Yahu A. Liu, Hui Yang, Wei-Bo Hu, Ke Wen

Summary: In this work, a facile method of introducing a single functionality in the ortho position of the hydroxyl group in A1/A2-dihydroxypillar[5]arene has been reported. The ortho-alkylation/arylation method was achieved via a Grignard addition to pillar[4]arene[1]quinone followed by a dienone-phenol rearrangement, allowing the formation of various mono ortho-alkyl/aryl-substituted A1/A2-dihydroxypillarNarenes previously difficult to obtain.

s-Tetrazine-Bridged Photochromic Aromatic Framework Material

Tao Chen, Guangjun Xiao, Zhuo Wang, Jian Zou, Jian Wang, Weibo Hu, Yahu A. Liu, Hui Yang, Ke Wen

Summary: Integrating fluorescent chromophores into aromatic frameworks can prevent aggregation-induced quenching and impart new fluorescence properties. In this study, s-tetrazine-bridged aromatic frameworks (TzAF) were fabricated by incorporating the smallest aromatic fluorophore, s-tetrazine (Tz), into the lattice of aromatic frameworks. The TzAF thin films exhibited reversible photoswitching fluorescence characteristics with excellent stability and high on/off contrast due to light-induced reversible transformation between TzAF's neutral and radical states.

Hydroxypillar[5]arene-Confined Silver Nanocatalyst for Selective Electrochemical Reduction of CO2 to Ethanol

Junjie Qin, Tao Wang, Mingming Zhai, Chengyu Wu, Yahu A. A. Liu, Bo Yang, Hui Yang, Ke Wen, Weibo Hu

Summary: This report describes a hydroxypillar[5]arene-extended porous polymer-confined silver catalyst (PAF-PA5-Ag-0.8) for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) that selectively produces ethanol with a maximum Faradaic efficiency of 55% at 11 mA cm(-1). The study reveals that the hydroxypillar[5]arene-confined Ag clusters are the active sites for ethanol formation. Moreover, temperature-programmed desorption measurements demonstrate an enhanced adsorption strength of CO* on PAF-PA5-Ag-0.8, favoring the C-C coupling to form ethanol.

1,3,5-Triazine and dithienothiophene-based conjugated polymers for highly effective photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Jie Yang, Yahu A. Liu, Ming-Ming Zhai, Jun-Jie Qin, Wei-bo Hu, Hui Yang, Ke Wen

Summary: This report describes the development of two triazine- and dithienothiophene-based conjugated microporous polymer (CMP) photocatalysts, TzDTT and TzDTDO. It was found that TzDTT possesses stronger electron donor-acceptor ability but a lower photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) rate compared to TzDTDO. The sulfone groups in TzDTDO were found to play a key role in its superior photocatalytic activity.

Jie Yang, Ming-Ming Zhai, Jun-Jie Qin, Yahu A. Liu, Wei-Bo Hu, Hui Yang, Ke Wen

Summary: In this study, two conjugated microporous polymers based on pyrene and triazine were synthesized, and their structure design was found to enhance the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The 1,6-substituted pyrene-based CMPs demonstrated higher conjugation and photocatalytic activity compared to the 2,7-substituted pyrene-based CMPs.

Modified minimal-size fragments of heparan sulfate as inhibitors of endosulfatase-2 (Sulf-2)

Summary: This study presents the design and synthesis of sulfated disaccharide inhibitors based on IdoA(2S)-GlcNS(6S), which showed potent inhibition of Sulf-2. The results suggest that IdoA(2S)-GlcNS(6S) is the shortest fragment size required for effective inhibition of Sulfs, and a trisulfated disaccharide is identified as the minimal fragment size of heparan sulfate for effective endosulfatase inhibition.

Reductive cyclodimerization of chalcones: exploring the self-adaptability of galvanostatic electrosynthesis

Mauro Garbini, Andrea Brunetti, Riccardo Pedrazzani, Magda Monari, Massimo Marcaccio, Giulio Bertuzzi, Marco Bandini

Summary: The self-adaptability of galvanostatic electrolysis was found to be helpful in a multistage chemo- and diastereoselective electrochemically promoted cyclodimerization of chalcones. Through a series of reductive events, densely functionalized cyclopentanes with five contiguous stereocenters were obtained (25 examples, yields up to 95%, dr values up to >20:1). Further experimental and electrochemical investigations indicated the crucial role of dynamic kinetic resolution of the aldol intermediate in the reaction mechanism.
