Impedance technology is a popular technique for the early detection of lymphedema. The preferred approach is to use bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS), with measurements being made with the subject lying supine, although attempts have been made to use single or multiple frequency impedance measurements obtained while the subject is standing. The aim of the present study was to determine the equivalence of these different approaches. Impedance measurements of the individual limbs of 37 healthy individuals were determined using both a stand-on, multi-frequency impedance device and a supine impedance spectroscopy instrument. Significant differences were found between the instruments in both absolute impedance values and, importantly, inter-limb impedance ratios. Since impedance ratios in healthy individuals provide the reference standard for detection of lymphedema, these data indicate that the methods are not interchangeable. Consideration of the errors associated with each method indicates that the BIS remains the preferred method for lymphedema detection.

Importance of health assessments for conservation in noncaptive wildlife

Sara Kophamel, Bjorn Illing, Ellen Ariel, Morgan Difalco, Lee F. Skerratt, Mark Hamann, Leigh C. Ward, Diana Mendez, Suzanne L. Munns

Summary: Wildlife health assessments are important for identifying populations at risk, but there are gaps in international collaboration and research on countries with high biodiversity. Recommendations include following assessment protocols, using adequate sample sizes, and integrating physiological and ecological understanding into species conservation planning.

Accuracy of body composition measurement techniques across the age span

Grace L. Rose, Morgan J. Farley, Leigh C. Ward, Gary J. Slater, Tina L. Skinner, Shelley E. Keating, Mia A. Schaumberg

Summary: This study investigated the accuracy of various body composition techniques compared to the reference 4-compartment (4C-R) model. It found that only the 3C-R and 4C-R equations were acceptable for individual measurement, while all techniques reached equivalency to the 4C-R model for fat-free mass (FFM). Sex and age had minimal influence on accuracy. For group estimates, any technique could be used for FFM, but incorporating total body water (TBW) measurement was necessary for accurate measurement of fat mass (FM).

Staging Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema with Bioimpedance Spectroscopy

Leigh C. Ward, Louise A. Koelmeyer, Emma Moloney

Summary: This study explored the utility of bioelectrical impedance parameters in staging breast cancer-related lymphedema through hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis. The cluster analysis of impedance data could potentially serve as a useful adjunct objective assessment for staging lymphedema by grouping patients with similar impedance characteristics.

Individualized body geometry correction factor (K B) for use when predicting body composition from bioimpedance spectroscopy

Leigh C. Ward, Jonathan C. K. Wells, Jaz Lyons-Reid, Mya T. Tint

Summary: This study aims to investigate the variation in body proportion factor (K (B)) across individuals and develop a method for individualized estimation. Using publicly available body dimension data, K (B) values were calculated and look-up tables were created. The results indicate that using individualized K (B) values can improve the accuracy of body composition prediction, particularly in individuals with smaller body habitus.

Summary: This study evaluated the content of 6-MSITC in hydroponically grown wasabi and its effects on rats fed with a high-carbohydrate, high-fat diet. Wasabi was found to reduce body weight, fat mass, plasma triglycerides, total cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood glucose concentration.

A longitudinal analysis of resting energy expenditure and body composition in people with spinal cord injury undergoing surgical repair of pressure injuries: a pilot study

Amy N. Nevin, Susan Urquhart, Sridhar S. Atresh, Timothy J. Geraghty, Elizabeth Walter, Elizabeth G. Ryan, Angela Vivanti, Leigh C. Ward, Ingrid J. Hickman

Summary: This study aimed to investigate resting energy expenditure during pressure injury surgical repair, compare it with available energy prediction equations, and explore the association between body composition and wound healing. The results showed that pressure injuries and surgical repair did not have an impact on resting energy expenditure, and the energy prediction equation incorporating fat-free mass performed the best. Although not statistically significant, clinically important differences in body composition were observed in individuals with wound breakdown.

Seasonal Variation in Upper Limb Size, Volume, Fluid Distribution, and Lymphedema Diagnosis, Following Breast Cancer Treatment

Jennifer Phillips, Susan Witt, Neil Piller, Susan Gordon

Summary: The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between seasonal climate variation and limb size, volume, fluid distribution, and diagnosis in women following breast cancer treatment. The results showed no significant correlation between seasonal variation in climate and upper limb size, volume, or fluid distribution in women diagnosed with or at risk of developing breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL), but the diagnosis of lymphedema varied between individual participants throughout the year.

A Prospective Preliminary Study Examining the Physiological Impact of Pneumatic Compression Dosing in the Treatment of Lower Extremity Lymphedema

Vaughan Keeley, Katie Riches, Leigh Ward, Peter J. Franks

Summary: This preliminary study evaluated the impact of different dosing protocols of pneumatic compression device (PCD) therapy on lymphedema patients. The results suggest that 1-hour daily PCD treatment may have potential benefits in reducing limb volume and extracellular fluid volume. Further research is needed to compare the treatment protocols and assess the differences over a longer study period using various measurement techniques.

Bioimpedance basics and phase angle fundamentals

Leigh C. Ward, Steven Brantlov

Summary: Measurement of phase angle using bioimpedance analysis (BIA) is popular for assessing cellular health, although the exact meaning of this term is not always clear. Current research often lacks understanding of the underlying biophysical models and mechanistic explanations. This review provides an understanding of the electrical models used to describe tissue properties, with emphasis on phase angle. The review also highlights practical concerns in measurement and the potential of bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) and simulation modeling.

Haematological and biochemical reference intervals for wild green turtles (Chelonia mydas): a Bayesian approach for small sample sizes

Sara Kophamel, Donna Rudd, Leigh C. Ward, Edith Shum, Ellen Ariel, Diana Mendez, Jemma Starling, Renee Mellers, Richard K. Burchell, Suzanne L. Munns

Summary: This study aimed to establish reference intervals (RIs) for blood parameters of green turtles using Bayesian modeling. The RIs were found to be comparable to previously published values and had narrower credible intervals. Most blood analytes did not vary significantly with foraging ground, body mass, or curved carapace length. However, length and body mass effects were observed for certain analytes, and significant differences between foraging grounds were found for several blood parameters. The derived RIs will be useful for future population health assessments and conservation efforts.
