Imaging of Spinal Bone Tumors: Principles and Practice

Shinji Tsukamoto, Andreas F. Mavrogenis, Kirsten van Langevelde, Niels van Vucht, Akira Kido, Costantino Errani

Summary: Age, location, and patient history are important factors in narrowing down the diagnosis of spinal bone lesions. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging play crucial roles in evaluating the characteristics of spinal bone tumors. Growth speed and Lodwick margin description can distinguish malignant from benign tumors to some extent. Biopsy is often necessary for a definitive diagnosis.

Anorexigenic Effects of Intermittent Hypoxia on the Gut-Brain Axis in Sleep Apnea Syndrome

Ryogo Shobatake, Hiroyo Ota, Nobuyuki Takahashi, Satoshi Ueno, Kazuma Sugie, Shin Takasawa

Summary: Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) is associated with intermittent hypoxia (IH) during sleep, which can affect insulin secretion and insulin resistance, potentially leading to obesity. The direct contribution of SAS to obesity is still debated. This review summarizes recent epidemiological findings on the relationship between SAS and feeding behavior, focusing on the effects of IH on the gut-brain axis.

Pain-Related Abnormal Neuronal Synchronization of the Nucleus Accumbens in Parkinson's Disease

Kaoru Kinugawa, Tomoo Mano, Yuya Yamatani, Toshiteru Miyasaka, Hiroshi Kataoka, Kazuma Sugie

Summary: The study found that pain intensity in patients with Parkinson's disease fluctuates between on and off states, with a correlation to the functional connectivity of the nucleus accumbens (NAc) with pain-related brain regions. These results contribute to understanding the mechanism of pain development in PD patients.

Pathogenic role of anti-cN1A autoantibodies in sporadic inclusion body myositis

Satoshi Yamashita, Nozomu Tawara, Ziwei Zhang, Shunya Nakane, Kazuma Sugie, Naoki Suzuki, Ichizo Nishino, Masashi Aoki

Summary: This study investigated the pathogenic properties of autoantibodies against cN1A in sporadic inclusion body myositis (sIBM) using active cN1A peptide immunisation. The results showed that mice injected with cN1A peptide exhibited weight loss, decreased motor activity, and histological changes resembling sIBM. Therefore, the study concluded that anti-cN1A autoantibodies have pathogenic properties in causing sIBM-like histological changes.

Ropinirole patch treatment of nocturnal violent tremor in Parkinson's disease

Hiroshi Kataoka, Kazuma Sugie

Summary: Parkinson's disease patients may experience nocturnal movement related to primary sleep disorders. This case report highlights an unusual occurrence of nocturnal tremor in a patient with PD. Treatment for such tremor can be challenging, but successful with the use of a long-acting ropinirole patch.

Comparison of pre-operative and post-operative radiotherapy in patients with localized myxoid liposarcoma

Tomoya Masunaga, Shinji Tsukamoto, Kanya Honoki, Hiromasa Fujii, Akira Kido, Manabu Akahane, Yasuhito Tanaka, Andreas F. Mavrogenis, Costantino Errani, Akira Kawai

Summary: There was no difference in local recurrence, survival or incidence of wound complications between pre- and post-operative radiotherapy for localized myxoid liposarcoma. Therefore, pre-operative radiotherapy for myxoid liposarcoma provides clinical results equivalent to post-operative radiotherapy.

High-dose steroid-responsive COVID-19-related encephalopathy with a sudden onset of dysarthria mimicking stroke: a case report

Naoya Kikutsuji, Hiroshi Kataoka, Takao Kiriyama, Kazuma Sugie

Summary: There is limited research on encephalitis/encephalopathy, a neurological complication of the less common coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study describes a case of COVID-19-related encephalopathy mimicking stroke that was successfully treated with high-dose steroid pulse therapy.

Improvement in Tongue Pressure Precedes Improvement in Dysphagia in Dermatomyositis

Tomoo Mano, Shigeto Soyama, Kazuma Sugie

Summary: Dysphagia is a known symptom of dermatomyositis, but it can be challenging to diagnose and treat sudden-onset dysphagia without other symptoms. Two patients without severe muscle weakness experienced sudden inability to swallow solids and liquids. Muscle biopsy results confirmed the diagnosis of dermatomyositis, and videofluoroscopy revealed pharyngeal contraction and upper esophageal sphincter opening issues. Both patients showed low tongue pressures. Treatment with methylprednisolone and immunoglobulin led to improvement in swallowing function, with tongue pressure improvement preceding subjective and objective measurements of dysphagia.

Electroencephalographic-Based Functional Connectivity Networks of Visual Hallucinations and Visuospatial Dysfunctions in Parkinson's Disease

Kaoru Kinugawa, Tomoo Mano, Tsunenori Takatani, Akira Kido, Kazuma Sugie

Summary: Visual dysfunction is a significant nonmotor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD), and visual hallucinations and visuospatial dysfunctions are common in PD patients. This study used electroencephalographic coherence analysis to evaluate neuronal synchronization in PD patients with and without visual hallucinations or visuospatial dysfunctions. The findings suggest that reduced coherence in the frontal regions of the brain may be involved in visuospatial dysfunctions in PD patients.

Effect of galvanic vestibular stimulation on axial symptoms in Parkinson's disease

Hiroshi Kataoka, Yohei Okada, Takao Kiriyama, Yorihiro Kita, Junji Nakamura, Koji Shomoto, Kazuma Sugie

Summary: Postural imbalance, abnormal axial posture, and axial rigidity are characteristic features of Parkinson's disease. Galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) has shown potential in improving these axial symptoms without adverse effects.
