The article provides an overview of the pathophysiology, treatment, and management options for neonatal encephalopathy in foals. Neonatal encephalopathy occurs in 10 to 14 percent of foals and can be categorized into ischemic/hypoxic and non-ischemic events. Early recognition of cases that can be managed on farm or require referral is crucial for foal survival.
Background: Neonatal encephalopathy is seen in 10 to 14 per cent of foals, with ischaemic/ hypoxic and non-ischaemic events observed. It is important to categorise foals based on type of encephalopathy and severity of clinical signs, as early recognition of cases that can be managed on farm, or that require referral, is key to optimising foal survival. Aim of the article: This article outlines the pathophysiology of neonatal encephalopathy in foals and the treatment and management options available for this condition.
