Summary: Micronutrients are crucial for healthy brain development in infants, and deficiencies in breast milk may impact cognitive outcomes. Current research on the relationship between breast milk micronutrients and infant developmental outcomes is limited, highlighting the need for further investigation in this area.

Summary: Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended during the first 6 months of life, with breast milk composition being influenced by maternal diet. Polyphenols and carotenoids present in breast milk have antioxidant activities and potential benefits for infants, with their content depending on maternal intake and various factors. Further research is needed to understand the relationship between these phytochemicals and development of infants.

Summary: This review assesses the enablers and barriers of infant and young child feeding practices in India, highlighting that higher maternal socioeconomic status and more frequent antenatal care visits are common enablers, while low SES and less frequent ANC visits are common barriers. The study suggests that improving IYCF practices in India requires multifactorial interventions at the subnational and national levels.

Summary: Evidence suggests a relationship between breast milk microbiota and infant gut microbiota. This study aimed to compare the effects of breast milk microbiota on the construction and colonization of gut microbiota in newborns. It was found that breast milk microbiota partially influences the construction of infant gut microbiota, with key strains such as Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Enterobacter having a crucial influence. However, this influence is not through direct strain transmission but may be mediated by the cross-feeding effect of short-chain fatty acids.

Summary: This study reports on the use of nivolumab during lactation in a woman with metastasized melanoma. It found that nivolumab accumulates in breast milk over two consecutive cycles. However, further research is needed to determine the safety of breastfeeding during nivolumab therapy.

Summary: Limited information is available on potential mother-to-child transmission of COVID-19, particularly through breast milk. Current evidence does not support the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 through breast milk. Further studies with longer follow-up periods are needed to gather data on infant feeding practices and viral presence in breast milk.

Summary: This article systematically reviews the importance of fructooligosaccharides (FOSs) in infant nutrition and discusses the potential benefits of adding them to infant formula. The authors screened 10 studies from major electronic databases and concluded that FOSs in human milk are crucial for infant gut development, and their addition to infant formula is safe and might provide immune benefits to newborns. However, they also emphasize the lack of human data and the need to avoid immediate commercialization of supplements marketed to adults.

Summary: The objective of this review was to analyze the literature on HMOs and neurodevelopmental outcomes in human milk-fed infants. Six studies were identified, all observational in design, and five conducted in full-term infants. The studies found that HMOs were positively associated with cognitive, language, and motor skill domains in infants between 18 and 24 months of age.

Summary: The study found limited evidence of ZIKV mother-to-child transmission through breastfeeding or breast milk intake, with only a few positive breast milk samples. Current evidence is insufficient, and further research is needed to confirm if ZIKV can be transmitted through breastfeeding.

Summary: This study systematically examined the nature and extent of exposure to violations of the International Code on infant and young child feeding and health. The findings showed that violations of the Code, particularly in inappropriate marketing, have continued despite its adoption in 1981. The majority of studies documenting such exposure were published since 2010, and they reported a wide range of marketing violations targeting different stakeholders. The study calls for renewed attention from the World Health Assembly and national governments to protect the health of children and their mothers.

Summary: Globally, there is a lack of children being breastfed according to recommendations, with digital marketing promoting breast-milk substitutes strategically across various platforms. Research on the impact of digital marketing is limited, but evidence suggests negative effects on breastfeeding intention and initiation. Coordinated global action and strengthened national measures are necessary to enforce regulations and protect breastfeeding.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution of artificial sweeteners (ASs) in the plasma and breast milk of lactating women and found that all four types of ASs were present in both plasma and breast milk, suggesting that they can be transferred to offspring through breastfeeding.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the reliability of self-reported weight and height values compared to measured values in children. The findings showed a high correlation between self-reported and measured values, but self-reported values tended to underestimate the actual measurements. Self-reported weight and height can be a reliable alternative to measurements, but caution should be taken when estimating the prevalence of over- or underweight.

Summary: This systematic review determined the calcium, zinc, and vitamin D content in breast milk. The results showed that calcium and zinc concentrations were influenced by various factors, such as maternal health and duration of lactation. Vitamin D concentration exhibited wide variations between studies and was affected by factors like vitamin D supplementation, continent, and season. These findings are important for understanding the nutritional composition and variations in breast milk.
