Summary: The surge in demand for oleochemicals during the Covid-19 pandemic presents an opportunity for the Malaysian palm oil industry, as Malaysia is one of the largest producers of palm oil. However, the current export structure is heavily reliant on crude palm oil, and there is a need to expand the production and export of high-value-added downstream palm oil products, including oleochemicals. This study assesses Malaysia's competitiveness in oleochemical products compared to other major oil and fat producing countries, and the results show that Malaysia has a higher and more stable trade advantage in this sector.

Summary: This paper discusses the potential and benefits of using closed anaerobic digesters to integrate palm oil mill effluent treatment and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing the sustainability of the palm oil industry. If all palm oil mills in Malaysia capture biogas, significant GHG reduction and renewable energy supply can be achieved.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of palm kernel cake supplementation on feed intake, methane production, and ingestive behavior of buffaloes. The results showed that the inclusion of palm kernel cake increased feed intake and reduced methane emissions, and also influenced the buffalo's ingestive behavior.

Summary: The objective of this study was to develop a derivatization-free method with simple preparation steps for routine analysis of the carbon chain distribution to determine the composition of palm-based fatty alcohol. The developed GC-FID method showed good validation parameters performance and the monitoring of commercial FAL from local manufacturers showed consistent composition with the required specifications.

Summary: The increased use of vehicle electrification to reduce greenhouse gas emissions requires an accurate assessment of the carbon footprint of traction batteries. However, there is a lack of lifecycle assessments for commercial lithium-ion batteries in the literature, especially regarding the use phase. In this study, we assess the cradle-to-gate and use-phase greenhouse gas emissions of the 2020 Model Year Ford Explorer plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) NMC622 battery. The results show that both phases are comparable and should be considered in a holistic and harmonized lifecycle assessment approach to reduce carbon footprint uncertainties and guide future battery designs.

Summary: Despite the increase in GHG emissions from Southeast Asian peat swamp forest degradation and conversion to oil palm, reliable estimates of N2O and CH4 emissions are lacking. This study measured soil fluxes of N2O and CH4 in a peatland transition from primary forest to oil palm plantation in Indonesia. Results showed that high N2O emissions in the oil palm plantation were driven by peat decomposition, not by N fertilizer addition. The study highlights the urgent need to protect tropical peat swamp forests from drainage and conversion.

Summary: Retrofitting thermal power plants is a valuable opportunity for sustainable electricity generation in Taiwan. A case study on an existing power plant near decommissioning was conducted to explore fuel source options for the retrofit and evaluate their impact on lifecycle atmospheric emissions. The study found that gas-fired electricity, even after considering liquefaction and regasification processes, has significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to coal or fuel oil. It also concluded that selecting natural gas for thermal power generation can simultaneously achieve the co-benefit of reducing air pollution.
