Summary: The study found that psychedelic treatment led to significant reductions in alcohol use and post-traumatic stress symptoms among Special Operations Forces Veterans. It also resulted in a significant increase in psychological flexibility. Most participants reduced their alcohol consumption to non-risky levels after treatment, with improvements in psychological flexibility strongly associated with reduced alcohol use and PTSD symptoms. Rigorous longitudinal studies are needed to determine the potential of psychedelic-assisted therapy as an intervention in this population.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between alcohol problems and social or psychological factors among post-deployed US veterans. Results showed that using drugs or alcohol to cope post-deployment was associated with problematic drinking, while positive personality traits like agreeableness and conscientiousness were linked to fewer drinking problems. Alcohol misuse was not related to distress or depression, but a higher AUDIT-C score was associated with better self-rated health.

Summary: This study compared the mental health of UK veterans and non-veterans and found that veterans who served during recent military operations had higher prevalence rates of common mental disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and alcohol misuse. The negative impact of being a veteran on mental health and alcohol misuse was primarily observed among male veterans.

Summary: Veterans are more vulnerable to experiencing concurrent issues related to depression and alcohol misuse, and this study found that ruminative thought processing plays an explanatory risk factor role in this relationship. By testing the simultaneous indirect effects of brooding rumination and reflective pondering, novel insights were provided concerning the circumstances under which reflection may become a maladaptive process.

Summary: This study examined the misuse of opioids and alcohol in 211 veterans prescribed opioids for chronic pain. In total, 32% were not misusing either, 23% were misusing both, 40% were misusing opioids, and 5% were misusing alcohol. Veterans not misusing either were generally less disabled and distressed compared to those misusing opioids or both.

Summary: The study results indicate that Step Away was found to be acceptable in terms of usability by Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans, who engaged with the app frequently over the 6-month study. Reductions were observed in heavy drinking days, alcohol-related problems, and Kessler-10 scores.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between psychedelic use and the propensity for accepting alternative facts. The findings revealed a moderate positive association between psychedelic use and beliefs in alternative facts, but no link was found for favoring intuition over evidence when confirming facts. Alcohol was negatively associated with beliefs in alternative facts.

Summary: Obesity and alcohol use disorder (AUD) often co-occur among U.S. military veterans. This study found that veterans with AUD were more likely to be overweight compared to those without AUD. Additionally, veterans with both AUD and obesity were more likely to have experienced adverse childhood experiences.

Summary: The use of digital technology in healthcare, particularly mobile health apps, is increasing in popularity and effectiveness. This study focused on recruiting military veterans for an intervention study to evaluate an app's efficacy in modifying behavior related to alcohol misuse, using strategies including partner organizations and Facebook ads. The targeted Facebook ads proved to be an efficient recruitment strategy, exceeding recruitment targets and saving time and resources while contacting eligible individuals.

Summary: This study examined the theory of intersectionality on alcohol misuse among older veterans, finding no significant interaction between age and sex with veteran status, but significant disparities in alcohol misuse were found based on race and veteran status. Older veterans who are also Black, Indigenous, and/or people of color are at higher risk of engaging in alcohol misuse due to the combined stressors from their intersectional identities.

Summary: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is highly prevalent among U.S. veterans and is associated with substantial psychopathology, including elevated odds of suicidal behaviors. Results underscore the importance of comprehensive screening and preventive efforts for AUD, and interventions that concurrently target overlapping alcohol use and psychiatric difficulties.

Summary: This longitudinal machine learning study demonstrates that alcohol misuse during adolescence can be significantly predicted from brain structure. Binge drinking was the most predictable behavior, with specific brain regions and structures playing important roles in the prediction. The choice of predicted phenotype, ML model, and confound correction technique were crucial in the explorative ML study, highlighting the importance of these decisions in analyzing psychiatric disorders with small effect sizes such as adolescence alcohol misuse.

Summary: This study examined how caregiver-child relationships and deviant peer affiliation shape the developmental trajectories of resilience among child welfare-involved youth. The results showed that adolescents' resilience increased over a 36-month period and that better caregiver-child relationships were associated with higher levels of resilience, while higher deviant peer affiliation was linked to lower levels of resilience. Significant lagged effects were also found, indicating that quality of caregiver-child relationships and deviant peer affiliation at the baseline influenced resilience at 18 months later.

Summary: Research on acceptability of non-abstinence goals among clinical social workers in the US found that non-abstinence was generally acceptable for clients with moderate substance use disorder, irrespective of the finality of the outcome goal. However, acceptance of non-abstinence was less for clients with severe substance use disorder, regardless of drug type or finality of the goal. Younger age and lower drug use stigma were associated with higher acceptability ratings for non-abstinence.

Summary: The present study aims to understand young adults' self-perceptions of aging and the way their self-perceptions would form through close contact with a grandparent. Thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with 14 young adults aged 18 to 39 revealed four overarching themes: dichotomous prospects of the older self, intangible resources considered essential for older adulthood, grandparent setting an example of older adulthood, and self-perceptions of aging formed by life events, others' aging, and physical appearance.

Summary: Trauma exposure throughout the lifespan poses risks for PTSD, depression, anxiety, and global disability. This study retrospectively analyzed data from trauma-exposed patients receiving ketamine-assisted psychotherapy treatment, showing meaningful improvements in PTSD symptoms, depression, and global disability after six sessions, but not in anxiety symptoms. Further research with larger and more diverse patient samples is needed for replication.

Summary: The study revealed that psychedelics significantly reduced symptoms of racial trauma among black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC), leading to decreases in depression, anxiety, and stress. Furthermore, there was a significant relationship between acute psychedelic effects and decreases in subsequent psychopathology, suggesting the potential efficacy of psychedelic-assisted therapy for individuals with a history of race-based trauma.
