Objective: To investigate the return to work status of patients with first-ever stroke with functional independence 6 months post-stroke. Design: Prospective cohort study. Participants: Nine hundred and thirty-three patients with functional independence at 6 months after stroke onset. Methods: A complete post-enumeration survey was performed through a review of the medical records for first admission. In addition, structured self-administered questionnaires and a face-to-face interview were performed assessing occupational status, quality of life, and emotional status at 6 months after stroke. Results: Of the patients in this study, 60.0% returned to work at 6 months after stroke. Sex, age, educational level, and comorbidity level were independent factors related to return to work. The rate of return to work in female patients under 65 years of age was similar to that of male patients 65 years of age or older. Stroke patients who returned to work showed better emotional statuses than those who did not return to work. Conclusion: Many stroke patients did not return to work despite functional independence at 6 months after stroke. Based on the results of this study, we suggest providing appropriate vocational rehabilitation for stroke patients and proper education for employers to increase the rate of early return to work in stroke patients.

Improved multi-echo gradient echomyelin water fraction mapping using complex-valued neural network analysis

Soozy Jung, JiSu Yun, Deog Young Kim, Dong-Hyun Kim

Summary: In this study, an improved MWF mapping method using complex-valued neural network analysis was proposed. The method showed better quantitative results by considering fiber orientation effects and correcting biases and artifacts. Additionally, uncertainty estimates were provided as a confidence interpretation of the output.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of post-stroke depression (PSD) on cognitive aging in elderly stroke patients. The results showed that early PSD increased the risk of cognitive decline in older stroke patients, mainly in males. Older male patients with negative thinking were at increased risk of cognitive decline, and older women may also be at risk for cognitive decline.

Changes in Long-Term Functional Independence in Patients with Moderate and Severe Ischemic Stroke: Comparison of the Responsiveness of the Modified Barthel Index and the Functional Independence Measure

Eun Young Lee, Min Kyun Sohn, Jong Min Lee, Deog Young Kim, Yong Il Shin, Gyung Jae Oh, Yang Soo Lee, So Young Lee, Min Keun Song, Jun Hee Han, Jeong Hoon Ahn, Young Hoon Lee, Won Hyuk Chang, Soo Mi Choi, Seon Kui Lee, Min Cheol Joo, Yun Hee Kim

Summary: This study investigated the long-term functional changes in patients with moderate-to-severe ischemic stroke and compared the differences between the modified Barthel Index (MBI) and Functional Independence Measure (FIM) according to severity. The results showed that the moderate group had greater recovery in the 3 months after onset compared to the severe group. FIM was found to be more appropriate than MBI for evaluating the functional status of patients with severe stroke.

Change in Bone Mineral Density in Stroke Patients with Osteoporosis or Osteopenia

Do-Hee Lee, Min-Cheol Joo

Summary: The correlation between changes in bone mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar spine (LS) and femoral neck (FN) and osteoporosis-related factors in stroke patients with osteoporosis or osteopenia were investigated in this study. The results showed a significant increase in LS BMD in the osteoporosis group after bisphosphonate treatment, while a significant decrease in FN BMD was observed in the osteopenia group. Functional factors, such as ambulatory category, were found to be associated with BMD improvement.

The Role of DNA Methylation in Stroke Recovery

Dong-Hee Choi, In-Ae Choi, Jongmin Lee

Summary: This review discusses the role of DNA methylation in neuroprotection and neuronal recovery after stroke. It summarizes the effects of DNA methylation on excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, apoptosis, neuroinflammation, and recovery after ischemic stroke. Investigating the modulation of DNA methyltransferase, demethylase, and MBD protein expression can aid in the formulation of therapeutic strategies for stroke.
