Summary: The main advantage of open strategy as a decision-making paradigm is that it enhances the accumulation and diversity of knowledge. Open strategy has been a popular area of scholarly management research over the past two decades due to its role in facilitating innovation through the integration of dispersed knowledge. However, there is a lack of empirical studies on open strategy, and its predictions, boundaries, and application in organizational decision-making have not been adequately explored. To fill this research gap and further examine the relationship between open strategy and innovation, this study develops and refines the construct of open strategy and assesses its relationship with absorptive capacity, a common predictor of innovation. The study focuses on assessing the validity of the construct in terms of convergence, discrimination, and prediction, with the aim of refining, validating, and measuring open strategy for future analysis.

Summary: Open innovation is an effective approach for SMEs to enhance innovation performance through acquiring external resources. This study examines the impact of inbound and outbound open innovation on SMEs' innovation performance, as well as the mediating role of absorptive capacity and the moderating role of business model. Through survey data from 218 Chinese manufacturing SMEs, the empirical results demonstrate that both inbound and outbound open innovation positively influence SMEs' innovation performance. Absorptive capacity partially mediates the relationships, and the efficiency-centered business model moderates the relationship between open innovation and SMEs' innovation performance. This study provides insights into the relationship between open innovation and SMEs' innovation performance, as well as the underlying mechanisms.

Summary: This meta-analysis examines the antecedents and moderating effects of open innovation on innovation and firm performance. The results indicate that factors such as appropriation strategy, organizational structure, learning culture, and top manager competence drive the implementation of both inbound and outbound open innovation. Absorptive capacity positively moderates the impact of open innovation on innovation performance. Furthermore, industry type does not moderate the effect of open innovation on innovation or firm performance, while firm size and cultural value partially moderate this relationship.

Summary: Recent studies on open innovation have shown inconsistent empirical results regarding the synergies between in-bound and out-bound knowledge flow. In this study, we argue that firms need to develop specific capabilities, such as absorptive and desorptive capacities, to engage in both buying and selling activities simultaneously. Our findings, based on a sample of 541 New Zealand firms involved in international collaborations, suggest that absorptive and desorptive capacity are not independent and the balanced development of these capabilities has a significant impact on firm performance. Additionally, we find that the interplay between technology licensing capability and absorptive capacity plays a key role in a firm's performance.

Summary: This paper addresses the concepts of inbound open innovation and outbound open innovation, and analyzes their relationship by incorporating managerial ties and absorptive capacity from a cross-country perspective. The results indicate that perceived absorptive capacity plays a mediating role in the relationship between external managerial ties and open innovation. Managerial ties have an impact on inbound open innovation in all three surveyed countries, while they are positively related to outbound open innovation in France and the UAE. The mediating role of absorptive capacity is evident in the cases of France and the UAE.

Summary: This study investigates how boundary spanners increase external knowledge inflow by engaging with external and internal parties. It focuses on engagement dynamics and the degree of switching between external and internal engagement. The study finds that strong switching is associated with a segmented knowledge structure and efficient processing, while weak or no switching is associated with a blended knowledge structure and reflective processing. The association between switching and knowledge transfer is contingent on the stickiness of knowledge and the importance of boundary-spanning activities over time.
