Summary: Cigarette butt-derived aerogel is effective in removing oil pollution in the Baltic Sea. Its hydrophobicity can be improved by wetting with a small amount of oil. Recycled aerogel samples have a lower sorption capacity compared to fresh samples, but can still be utilized in the life cycle of cellulose acetate.

Summary: The objective of this research was to develop new hydrophobic silica aerogel microspheres (HSAMs) with water glass and hexmethyldisilazane for oil adsorption. The effects of the hexmethyldisilazane concentration and drying method on the structure and organic liquid adsorption capacity were investigated. The HSAMs synthesized via supercritical CO2 drying had a larger organic liquid adsorption capacity, and the new preparation method is facile, cost-effective, safe, and ecofriendly.

Summary: A superhydrophobic-superoleophilic, magnetic and 3D porous carbon-based foam has been synthesized for selective oil removal from water in both open and non-open environments. The foam exhibits low density, high compressive strength, and high oil adsorption capacity, and can selectively remove oil from water under the assistance of a magnet. The foam also demonstrates excellent chemical stability and high/low temperature stability, allowing for effective oil removal under various conditions.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a surge in the production of polymer medical disposals, particularly the polypropylene (PP) ones. Burning these disposals, such as surgical masks and hospital sheets, results in large carbon footprints. This study presents an alternative approach of functional recycling, where waste PP is converted into oil spill sorbents. The prepared materials, PP-MAF6, exhibit high adsorption capacity and efficiency for various oils, including diesel fuel.

Summary: This study presents a rapid and simply prepared TMSPMA-based aerogel with ultra-low density, high mechanical properties, extremely low thermal conductivity, and high hydrophobicity achieved by manipulating the nano-architecture of the aerogel structure. Two novel approaches, including post-gelation free radical self-curing method and changing the precursor nature, were explored to optimize the connectivity state.

Summary: An efficient auto-continuous globing process was developed to synthesize pure silica aerogel microspheres using sodium silicate and water as precursors. Hydrophobic and reinforced silica aerogel microspheres were obtained through methyl grafting and polymer cross-linking, respectively. The resulting microspheres showed high organic sorption capacities, high pore volumes, and high specific surface areas, making them exceptional in terms of capacity, dynamics, regenerability, and stability.

Summary: With the rapid development of industry and the acceleration of urbanization, oil pollution has caused serious damage to water, and its treatment has always been a research hotspot. Compared with traditional adsorption materials, aerogel has the advantages of light weight, large adsorption capacity and high selective adsorption, features that render it ideal as a high-performance sorbent for water treatment. The objective of this research was to develop novel hydrophobic polymer-reinforced silica aerogel microspheres (RSAMs) with water glass as the precursor, aminopropyltriethoxysilane as the modifier, and styrene as the crosslinker for oil removal from water.
