Summary: This study provides previously unavailable stage-specific five-year survival rate data for specific cancers in Canada. The results show that, except for prostate cancer, the five-year survival rate decreases as the stage at diagnosis increases. The study emphasizes the importance of early cancer detection and highlights some progress in stage-specific survival rates among top cancers in Canada, providing data to inform health policy and clinical decisions regarding cancer treatment.

Summary: This study investigated the clinicopathological and prognostic characteristics of HER2-low status in a large sample of early-stage triple-negative breast cancer datasets. The findings suggest that HER2-low breast cancer is associated with better breast cancer-specific survival, especially in high-risk groups.

Summary: This study evaluated the prognostic factors, 5-year overall survival (OS), and cancer-specific survival (CSS) of patients with resectable stage III NSCLC. The results showed improvement in OS and CSS over the past 19 years for patients with resectable stage III NSCLC. Squamous cell carcinoma was associated with lower OS and CSS compared to adenocarcinoma.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between visceral obesity and disease recurrence and survival in early-stage colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. The researchers also examined if this association is influenced by metformin use. The results showed that visceral obesity, but not BMI, is associated with recurrence risk and poorer survival in stage I/II CRC. Interestingly, this association is influenced by metformin use.

Summary: The European Commission's recommendation for triennial breast cancer screening in women aged 70-74 lacks strong evidence support. A study in Italy found that the proportional incidence of interval breast cancer increased annually in this age group, suggesting the need for further research to determine the optimal screening protocol for this population.

Summary: This study analyzed the changes in 5-year relative survival of breast and colorectal cancer patients in a northern Italian province from 2000 to 2012, showing an overall stable increase in 5-year relative survival for breast cancer but no improvement for colorectal cancer survival in terms of stage and period. The introduction of screening in 2005 did, however, lead to a sharp decrease in colorectal cancer incidence and mortality rates.

Summary: The study aims to identify prognostic variables for 5-year survival in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients and propose a survival prognostic score that considers changes in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) over time. Data was collected from CRC patients through a prospective observational cohort study, including diagnosis, intervention, and follow-up at 1, 2, 3, and 5 years. HRQoL data was assessed using EQ-5D-5L, EORTC-QLQ-C30, and HADS questionnaires. Multivariate Cox proportional models were used for analysis. The results identified several predictors of mortality over the 5-year follow-up period. These findings provide insights for establishing preventive and controlling measures for long-term follow-up of CRC patients based on easily measurable variables.

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the differences in age, stage, and treatment between 2020 and 2019 tumors. The results showed no decrease in invasive and in situ tumors in 2020, but there was a significant decrease in surgery and an increase in neoadjuvant chemotherapy. During the lockdown period, tumor numbers decreased in all age groups, especially among those aged 75 and above. Screening activities were suspended from March to May but resumed later and addressed the backlog. This suggests that a prompt resumption of programmed screening may have limited the impact of the pandemic on the delay of breast cancer diagnoses.

Summary: The aim of this work was to analyze the trends of kidney tumors in a province of northern Italy over a 25-year period. The study found an increase in kidney cancer cases in men from 1996 to 2011, followed by a decrease in incidence, possibly due to a decline in cigarette smoking. Mortality rates decreased in both men and women, thanks to earlier diagnosis and advanced treatments. However, there was an increase in mortality from cardiovascular disease, which may be linked to the cardiotoxicity of certain treatments. A multidisciplinary approach is necessary to ensure proper follow-up and treatment for kidney cancer patients.

Summary: Ovarian cancer is a highly aggressive tumor with complex clinical and molecular characteristics, often diagnosed late due to lack of specific symptoms. A multidisciplinary approach can improve the prognosis by changing treatment, reducing recurrences and deaths, and increasing survival rates. This study demonstrates the benefits of a multidisciplinary team in managing ovarian cancer, showing lower rates of recurrences and deaths in patients.

Summary: This observational epidemiological study analyzed the incidence, mortality, and survival trends of lung cancer based on different subtypes. The study confirmed a decline in lung cancer incidence and mortality in males starting from 2013, but the reasons behind this decline, such as the decrease in smoking rates and the introduction of new drugs, remain unclear. In females, the incidence and mortality rates of lung cancer continued to rise until 2012 but slightly declined afterward. This study is significant as it examines the changes in lung cancer rates among males and females according to different histotypes.

Summary: The accurate registration of hematological malignancies (HMs) is challenging due to the de-hospitalization of patients and the transition to molecular diagnosis. However, the Reggio Emilia Province Cancer Registry (RE-CR) successfully registered HMs by adopting a software capable of automatically identifying suspected cases.
