Summary: The Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson overturned previous protections for abortion and led to abortion restrictions in 25 states, creating a lack of access to abortion care. This will have profound physical and mental health consequences for millions of pregnant people, particularly those already marginalized. Forced pregnancies worsen health outcomes and increase mortality risk, and abortion bans are projected to increase the maternal mortality rate in the US. Additionally, denying abortion care interferes with appropriate medical care and exacerbates the existing maternal mental health crisis.

Summary: As abortion becomes increasingly politicized in the US, it is important to recognize it as a healthcare issue. Preparations for the potential criminalization of abortion are necessary, but raise many questions. Healthcare systems can still assist patients in need, but legal and logistical obstacles will arise. Self-managed abortions pose risks and legal concerns. The illegalization of abortion will impact maternity care and increase maternal mortality. Medical education and the healthcare workforce will also be affected. Avoiding the issue of abortion is impossible, as it is a matter of healthcare and equity.

Summary: In June 24, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health overturned Roe v Wade, returning the authority to regulate abortion to individual states. This has significant implications for reproductive autonomy, particularly in regards to abortion care and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Abortion bans, especially those with personhood clauses, could inadvertently restrict IVF practices, impacting embryo cryopreservation, preimplantation genetic testing, single embryo transfer, and access to infertility treatments. These bans have far-reaching consequences beyond abortion that are not widely understood within the medical community.

Summary: Justice Thomas's concurrence in the recent Supreme Court case Box v. Planned Parenthood linking abortion and eugenics could potentially have a significant impact on abortion rights and race jurisprudence. By associating abortion with eugenic racism, the concurrence sets the stage for overturning past precedents like Roe v. Wade by arguing that the abortion right is rooted in discriminatory practices targeting Black reproduction. This strategy not only undermines abortion rights but also presents a broader opportunity to redefine the Court's understanding of race and racial harm.

Summary: Prenatal genetic screening and diagnostic testing should be adjusted based on gestational age and the availability of legal abortion services, as different states have implemented gestational age-based abortion restrictions. As of December 11, 2022, 14 states have restrictions that prevent diagnostic testing before gestational age-based cutoffs, while 35 states allow both chorionic villous sampling (CVS) and amniocentesis. Clinicians may face challenges in counseling patients due to the timing of screening results and gestational age limitations. These restrictions may have downstream consequences for genetic screening and testing paradigms, potentially leading to changes in counseling options and higher CVS procedure rates.

Summary: In June 2022, the US Supreme Court overturned the right to terminate a pregnancy, leading to the passage of abortion ban laws in some states, including the use of methotrexate (MTX). This study analyzed Twitter data to understand the short-term implications on rheumatology care. The findings highlighted concerns of violence against women, flawed health policies, and calls for strategic alliances in favor of public health. Access to MTX for rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases was identified as a critical issue endangering the health of people with these conditions.
