Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of immunohistochemistry (IHC) or flow cytometry (FCM) on specimens obtained from EUS-FNB and EUS-FNA in the diagnosis and staging of deep-seated lymphomas. The results showed that compared with EUS-FNA, EUS-FNB yielded better quality tissue samples and higher diagnostic accuracy. The application of FCM improved the diagnostic efficacy of EUS-FNA, but EUS-FNB remained the preferred diagnostic modality in terms of procedure time, accuracy, and cost-effectiveness.

Summary: Evidence of increased diagnostic pressure on the thyroid has been observed in recent decades. A population-based study in North-eastern Italy revealed higher rates of thyroid examinations and treatments for women compared to men. The results highlight the importance of harmonizing practices and reducing unnecessary procedures in certain areas.

Summary: This study compared the diagnostic accuracy of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and ultrasound in thyroid nodule diagnosis. The results showed that FNAC had a higher sensitivity than ultrasound, while ultrasound had a higher specificity than FNAC. Combining these two methods can improve diagnostic accuracy.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed the UCSF pathology database for thyroid FNABs, analyzing a large cohort of patients with long-term follow-up to determine the risk of thyroid malignancy for different diagnostic categories. The results showed that patients with initial benign or unsatisfactory biopsy results are unlikely to develop thyroid malignancy or die of thyroid cancer, highlighting the high accuracy of FNAB in detecting malignancy.

Summary: Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is crucial for evaluating thyroid nodules with suspicious features, and the use of US-guidance is important for real-time visualization of the needle. Collaboration among different specialties is essential for a standardized and meticulous technique to reduce nondiagnostic specimens and false-negative results.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of combined fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and core needle biopsy (CNB). The results showed that regardless of nodule size, combined FNA/CNB tended to yield lower proportions of inconclusive results than CNB or FNA alone and exhibited higher performance in diagnosing malignancy. The combined FNA/CNB technique may be a more valuable diagnostic method for nodules ???1.5 cm and nodules with a risk of malignancy than CNB and FNA alone.

Summary: Ultrasound-guided CNB is more effective than rFNA for repeat biopsy of thyroid nodules with inconclusive initial FNA results, especially for patients with categories I and III, but showed no significant differences for category IV nodules.

Summary: This study compared the effects of different needle sizes (23-, 25-, and 27-gauge) on the non-diagnostic (ND) rates of thyroid fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). The results showed that the 25-gauge needle had a significantly lower ND rate compared to the 27-gauge needle, and increased nodule size was associated with a reduced ND rate.

Summary: This study compared core needle biopsy (CNB) and repeat fine-needle aspiration (rFNA) in reducing the rates of potential diagnostic surgery and unnecessary surgery for nodules initially diagnosed as atypia/follicular lesions of undetermined significance (AUS/FLUS). CNB was found to be superior to rFNA in reducing the rates of diagnostic surgery and unnecessary surgery.

Summary: A rapid classification method for malignant and benign thyroid nodules was developed using machine learning with ultrasound guided-fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) samples. The new features generated from pairwise coupling of ions showed better performance than the traditional features, resulting in high accuracy for undetermined patients and especially for those with suspicious for papillary carcinoma diagnosis.

Summary: Pain levels during thyroid nodule FNAB are influenced by various factors, including patient-related and procedure-related factors. Nodule calcification, the number of needle passes, the aspiration technique, perpendicular needle placement, and not using safety devices are associated with increased pain. Needle size, biopsy type, operator expertise, and patient education do not appear to be correlated with pain. Subcutaneous lidocaine may provide better pain relief than a topical analgesic.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of needle bevel geometry and length on resonance characteristics and deflection magnitude, finding differences in deflection-to-power ratio among needles with different bevel geometries in air and water. The study emphasizes the importance of the relationship between bevel geometry flexural stiffness and insertion media, providing insights for controlling post-puncture cutting action.

Summary: Fine-needle aspiration biopsies (FNA) are commonly used to exclude the malignant nature of thyroid nodules, but a significant proportion of cases are indeterminate. A study found that matrix-assisted laser-desorption ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) can improve the diagnostic performance of FNA by separating benign and malignant cell areas. However, the performance of the model is affected by poor spectra and noise.

Summary: Endoscopic ultrasound tissue acquisition, through EUS-FNA and EUS-FNB, is commonly used for pancreatic mass lesions, subepithelial lesions, and lymph node biopsy. While both methods are safe and offer high diagnostic value, there are potential limitations with EUS-FNA related to cytological aspirations. Comparative trials between EUS-FNA and EUS-FNB for pancreatic mass lesions have shown conflicting results, with the need for further large-scale studies for other types of lesions.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of impaired pulmonary function on patient-centered outcomes after hospital discharge due to severe COVID-19. The findings suggest that patients with a restrictive ventilatory defect exhibit worse respiratory symptoms, health-related quality of life, lung function, and exertional dyspnea compared to those without prior respiratory comorbidities. These results highlight the importance of understanding the long-term consequences of COVID-19 on pulmonary function.

Summary: Objective: To investigate the impact of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) on functional outcomes and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) patients placed on a lung transplant waitlist and receiving antifibrotic therapy (AFT). Methods: This was a retrospective observational study of consecutive IPF patients receiving AFT with either pirfenidone or nintedanib (the AFT group) and undergoing PR between January of 2018 and March of 2020. The AFT group and the control group (i.e., IPF patients not receiving AFT) participated in a 12-week PR program consisting of 36 sessions. After having completed the program, the study participants were evaluated for the six-minute walk distance (6MWD) and HRQoL. Pre- and post- PR 6MWD and HRQoL were compared within groups and between groups.

Summary: This study aimed to identify independent factors associated with the use of oxygen and oxygen flow rate in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) patients undergoing pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) while on a lung transplant waitlist. Functional capacity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) data were collected before and after 36 sessions of PR, showing that the use of ambulatory oxygen therapy during PR improved functional capacity and HRQoL in patients with IPF.
