Summary: This study aimed to describe the burden trends of thyroid cancer in North Africa and the Middle East from 1990 to 2019. The findings showed that thyroid cancer has a high incidence rate in this region, particularly among women, the elderly above 60, and countries with higher socioeconomic index. A high body mass index (BMI) was found to be a significant risk factor for thyroid cancer. The study recommends preventive measures such as lifestyle modifications, including weight reduction programs.

Summary: This study reported the burden of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, showing an increasing trend in the prevalence and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) of RA since 1990. The highest prevalence was found in females aged 50-54 and males aged 45-49. The increase in burden was associated with an increase in socio-demographic index (SDI).

Summary: This study aims to provide a comprehensive outlook of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in the Middle East and North Africa region. The findings indicate that the prevalence of ASD remained stable from 1990 to 2019, but there are significant differences between countries. Socio-demographic factors have a significant impact on Years Lived with Disability (YLD), and governments and health systems should implement policies to improve the quality of life for ASD patients in the region.

Summary: Eating disorders, specifically anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), have shown increasing trends in incidence and burden from 1990 to 2019 in China. The prevalence of AN peaked at 15-19 years old, while the prevalence and DALYs of BN peaked at 30-34 years old. Females had a higher burden of AN, while males had a higher burden of BN.

Summary: Observation-based and modeling studies have identified the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region as a prominent climate change hotspot. The region's greenhouse gas emissions are rapidly increasing, leading to faster warming compared to other inhabited regions. Projected future trends include continued warming and an increase in extreme weather events. The region's vulnerability to climate change highlights the importance of adaptation and resilience strategies for sectors at risk.

Summary: This study documents the winter aerosol optical depth trends in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region using MERRA-2 and MODIS data. It reveals a significant increase in AOD from 2000 to 2010, followed by a decrease from 2010 to 2017, mainly attributed to aeolian dust. The changes in AOD are related to meteorological factors, with shifting wind patterns influencing dust mobilization in the region.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia with increasing prevalence and burden in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. This study analyzed data from 1990 to 2019 and found that the prevalence, death rates, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of dementia have increased. Afghanistan had the highest DALY rate, while Egypt had the lowest. The burden of dementia was higher in females and increased with age. The DALY rate of dementia decreased with increasing sociodemographic index but slightly increased at an SDI of 0.75.

Summary: Pancreatic cancer in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has shown a clear and substantial increase in burden, with a high incidence and death rate. Smoking, high fasting plasma glucose, and high body mass index are significant risk factors for pancreatic cancer in the region. Summary: The point prevalence and incidence rate of anorexia nervosa have increased in the Middle East and North Africa region between 1990 and 2019. The highest burden in 2019 was found in Kuwait, while Afghanistan had the lowest attributable burden. Iran had the largest increase in the point prevalence of anorexia nervosa between 1990 and 2019. Additionally, anorexia nervosa was more prevalent in females and peaked in the 15-19 age group for males and the 20-24 age group for females. Furthermore, as the level of socioeconomic development increased, so did the burden attributable to anorexia nervosa.

Summary: Lead exposure and its related burden have decreased in the North Africa and Middle East region from 1990 to 2019. However, there is still a need for cost-effective and long-term programs to address this public health concern. Cardiovascular diseases and chronic kidney diseases are the main causes of lead-induced burden in this region.

Summary: This study aimed to report, compare and contextualize the prevalence, incidence, and years lived with disability (YLDs) of low back pain in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region from 1990 to 2019. The burden of low back pain in MENA slightly decreased during this period, with a higher burden among males than the global average. More integrated healthcare interventions are needed to alleviate the burden of low back pain in this region.

Summary: This study aimed to summarize the research design, modeling strategies, and performance measures of clinical prediction models developed using machine learning techniques. A total of 152 studies were included, and it was found that most studies only reported the development of the models, without reporting sample size calculation, handling of missing values, and internal validation. Therefore, further improvement is needed in the methodological conduct and reporting standards of studies on machine learning-based prediction models.

Summary: This study assesses the prevalence and typology of perioperative adverse event reporting guidelines among surgery and anesthesiology journals. Results show that 46.5% of the queried journals recommend surgical adverse event reporting. Journals in the surgery, urology, and anesthesia categories are most likely to recommend reporting; those in the top SJR quartiles and based in Western Europe, North America, and the Middle East are also more likely to recommend.

Summary: The present study examines the cancer deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) attributable to high fasting plasma glucose (HFPG) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region from 1990 to 2019. The results show that the burden of HFPG-related cancers has increased over the past three decades in MENA, exceeding the global average in several age groups. Implementing preventive measures and therapeutic interventions is recommended to address the adverse effects of HFPG.

Summary: This scoping review aimed to identify barriers and facilitators to implementing and scaling musculoskeletal injury (MSK-I) mitigation and prevention programmes (MSK-IMPPs) in military populations. The review found that limited resources, lack of stakeholder engagement, competing military priorities, and equipment-related factors were barriers to implementation, while strong stakeholder engagement, targeted programme design, involvement of MSK-I experts, providing education on MSK-I mitigation, low burden on resources, and end-user acceptability were facilitators. Research gaps included variability in reported MSK-I outcomes and lack of consensus on relevant surveillance metrics and definitions.

Data on the burden of ADHD were retrieved from the Global Burden of Disease study 2019. The results showed a decrease in the burden of ADHD in MENA from 1990 to 2019, with lower prevalence and years lived with disability (YLD) rates.
