This study suggests that postmenopausal women with a history of premature menopause or early menopausal age may have an increased risk of heart failure and atrial fibrillation. These reproductive factors need to be considered for preventing future risks of heart failure and atrial fibrillation.
This study showed that a history of premature menopause and early menopausal age was associated with an increased risk of both heart failure and atrial fibrillation in postmenopausal women. Aims This study aimed to examine the association of premature menopause and age at menopause with the risk of heart failure (HF) and atrial fibrillation (AF). Methods and results A total of 1 401 175 postmenopausal women, who had undergone health examination provided by the Korean National Health Insurance Service, were included, and their reproductive histories were collected. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard models were performed to determine the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of incident HF and AF, according to the history of premature menopause and age at menopause. At a mean follow-up of 9.1 years, there were 42 699 (3.0%) and 44 834 (3.2%) new cases of HF and AF, respectively. Women with history of premature menopause had an increased risk of HF (HR: 1.33, 95% CI: 1.26-1.40) and AF (HR: 1.09, 95% CI: 1.02-1.16), compared to women without the history. Compared with women aged >= 50 years at menopause, those aged 45-49, 40-44, and <40 years at menopause showed a significantly increased trend in HRs for the incident risk of both HF and AF (P for trend <0.001). The robustness of the results of a series of sensitivity analyses further strengthens the main findings. Conclusion Our findings suggest that postmenopausal women with a history of premature menopause or early menopausal age may have an increased risk of HF and AF. These reproductive factors need to be considered for preventing the future risk of HF and AF.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of BMI and WC on cardiovascular diseases in individuals aged 40 and 66 years. The results showed that there were different associations between BMI/WC and CVDs in different age groups, indicating effect modification by age. Weight loss intervention should be individualized according to age, and maintaining muscle mass may be crucial for managing weight loss in older population.

Summary: This study examines the effect of waist circumference on the risk of developing end-stage renal disease (ESRD) based on glycaemic status. It finds that central obesity significantly increases the risk of ESRD, while a low waist circumference also affects the risk of ESRD in diabetes patients.

Summary: This study examined the association between bone mineral density (BMD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) in postmenopausal women. It found that lower BMD and osteoporosis were associated with an increased risk of PD, and this association could be mitigated using antiosteoporosis medications. Proper management of BMD in postmenopausal women may help prevent PD.

Association of Dental Diseases and Oral Hygiene Care With the Risk of Heart Failure in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes: A Nationwide Cohort Study

Youn Huh, Jung Eun Yoo, Sang-Hyun Park, Kyungdo Han, Seon Mee Kim, Hye Soon Park, Kyung Hwan Cho, Jin-Soo Ahn, Sang Ho Jun, Ga Eun Nam

Summary: This study investigated the association between dental diseases, oral hygiene care, and the incidence of heart failure (HF) in patients with type 2 diabetes. The results showed that an increased number of missing teeth was associated with a higher risk of HF, while regular dental cleaning and frequent toothbrushing were associated with a decreased risk of HF. The presence of dental diseases increased the risk of HF, but good oral hygiene care further reduced the risk of HF.

Diagnosis of Obesity: 2022 Update of Clinical Practice Guidelines for Obesity by the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity

Ji-Hee Haam, Bom Taeck Kim, Eun Mi Kim, Hyuktae Kwon, Jee-Hyun Kang, Jung Hwan Park, Kyoung-Kon Kim, Sang Youl Rhee, Yang-Hyun Kim, Ki Young Lee

Summary: The global prevalence of obesity is consistently increasing, leading to the emergence of many obesity-related diseases as major health problems. Body mass index (BMI) is used to define obesity and is strongly associated with body fat mass. Additionally, obesity-related morbidities increase proportionately with BMI. The Korean Society for the Study of Obesity has defined overweight as a BMI >23 kg/m2 and obesity as a BMI >25 kg/m2, based on a significant increase in obesity-related diseases. A waist circumference of >90 cm in men and >85 cm in women is defined as abdominal obesity, which is also correlated with obesity-related diseases. The updated guidelines place greater emphasis on using morbidity as the basis for diagnosing obesity and abdominal obesity. These new guidelines will assist in identifying and managing high-risk groups for obesity-related comorbidities among Korean adults.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of a marine healing program on metabolic syndrome indicators and mental health in adults with metabolic syndrome or at risk of developing it. The experimental group showed significant improvements in blood pressure, triglycerides, body weight, high-density lipoprotein, uric acid, and mental health indicators. Comparisons between the experimental and control groups showed that the experimental group had greater improvements in body weight and HDL-C. Overall, marine healing programs appear to be effective in improving metabolic syndrome indicators.
