This review introduces the application of bone-targeted biomaterials in the treatment of bone diseases. It provides valuable information for chemists, materials scientists, pharmacists, and clinicians.
Bone diseases including osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and bone tumors are becoming severe threats to public health. Bone-targeted biomaterials-based strategies could improve therapeutic effects while avoiding systemic complications, demonstrating promising translational potential in bone-related diseases treatment. In the present review, we introduced the bone biology, bone-targeting strategies, bone-targeted moieties, and bone-targeted biomaterials for the treatment of bone diseases. The discussions herein presented will provide useful information of bone-targeted biomaterials for the chemists and materials scientists, give clue for the selection of suitable bone-targeted drug for the pharmacists, and offer new insights into the therapy of bone-related diseases for the clinicians.
