Summary: For patients waitlisted for lung transplantation, dyspnea and health status are significantly associated with waitlist mortality, along with age, underlying disease, and pulmonary function. Multidimensional analysis, including subjective perceptions, may help in risk stratification for waitlist mortality.

Summary: The current U.S. lung transplant mortality risk models do not consider the disease progression of patients over time. This study investigated the impact of accrued waitlist time on mortality in lung transplant candidates and recipients beyond clinical deterioration and proposed a new framework for conceptualizing mortality risk in end-stage lung disease.

Summary: This study used a medical decision analytical model to estimate the net benefit and costs of allocating deceased donor kidneys to preemptively waitlisted patients versus those receiving dialysis. The results showed that preemptive kidney transplantation was the best option from a patient perspective, but allocating kidneys to patients receiving dialysis was a better use of scarce resources from a societal perspective.

Summary: This study retrospectively evaluated the outcomes of lung transplantation in patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis. Among the 11 patients who underwent bilateral lung transplantation, the hospital mortality rate was 18.2% and the 1-year mortality rate was 27.2%. Lung transplantation can improve the quality of life and increase survival in these patients.

Summary: This study investigated the association between preoperative quality of life and long-term survival in patients undergoing surgical resection for non-small cell lung cancer. The findings showed that higher patient-reported physical function score was significantly associated with longer overall survival. Other factors such as older age, low body mass index, male sex, and nodal involvement were also found to be associated with poorer overall survival.

Summary: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a major risk factor for cervical cancer, and transplant recipients have a higher risk of HPV complications. A retrospective study on adult female cystic fibrosis (CF) lung transplant recipients found that 35.3% had abnormal pap smear results, including refractory anogenital warts, vulvectomy, and cervical cancer. The study also revealed that lung transplant recipients had a higher likelihood of cervical dysplasia compared to the control group, emphasizing the importance of HPV vaccination to prevent future morbidity and mortality.

Summary: The study aimed to predict the birth date in women with threatened preterm labor (TPL) based on stress response, cumulative life stressors, and obstetric variables. Lower family adaptation, higher BMI, higher cortisol levels, and TPL diagnosis week were the main predictors of birth date, with a non-linear interaction between cortisol levels and TPL diagnosis week.

Summary: This study examined the impact of different temperament traits on sexual functioning in individuals with bipolar disorder. The findings suggest that individuals with hyperthymic traits have better sexual functioning, while other types of temperaments do not significantly contribute to sexual functioning. Summary: This study evaluated the effect of a 2-year nutritional intervention with antioxidant nutraceuticals on retinitis pigmentosa (RP) patients. The findings showed that the intervention improved retinal responses and reduced ocular oxidative damage, suggesting that long-term nutraceutical supplementation can slow down visual impairment and ameliorate ocular oxidative stress in RP.

Summary: The role of NETs and platelet activation in COVID-19 is not well known. This study aimed to evaluate their impact on clinical trajectories. The levels of cfDNA, CitH3, and P-selectin were found to be associated with disease severity and analytical parameters. Higher levels of CitH3 and P-selectin increased the risk of transitioning from the emergency department to the ICU, while higher levels of P-selectin increased the risk of transitioning from the ward to death. Elevated levels of CitH3, cfDNA, and P-selectin decreased the probability of transitioning from the ward to discharge. These findings suggest that NETs and P-selectin levels can be useful in predicting different clinical trajectories.

Summary: This study aims to compare and describe the composition and diversity of the oral microbiome in patients with homogeneous leucoplakia, proliferative verrucous leukoplakia, oral squamous cell carcinoma, and OSCC preceded by PVL. The number of bacterial species was lower in cancer patients, with Fusobacteriota being the dominant group. PVL and PVL-OSCC patients had a higher abundance of Campilobacterota and lower Proteobacteria compared to other groups. This is the first study comparing oral microbiome alterations in these groups, and further research is needed.

Summary: This study investigated the pathophysiologic differences between proliferative verrucous leukoplakia-associated oral squamous cell carcinoma (PVL-OSCC) and non-PVL-OSCC through transcriptomic and DNA methylation analyses. The results showed that PVL-OSCC patients had lower expression of cancer-related genes and hypermethylation of the promoter region of many genes, suggesting that DNA methylation could be a regulatory mechanism.

Summary: This systematic review evaluates the effects and mechanisms of Resveratrol (RSV) in animal models of ischemic stroke. The results show that RSV has beneficial effects on structural and functional outcomes, including reducing infarct size, edema size, BBB impairment, neurofunctional impairment, and improving motor performance. These effects may be attributed to the reduction of oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. However, further high-quality preclinical research is needed to better inform clinical research.
