This article proposes a wirelessly powered edge intelligence framework to achieve stable, robust, and sustainable edge intelligence through energy harvesting methods. The use of a permissioned edge blockchain ensures secure energy and knowledge sharing. The article also investigates a wirelessly powered multiagent edge learning model and designs an optimal learning strategy.
Recently, edge artificial intelligence techniques (e.g., federated edge learning) are emerged to unleash the potential of big data from Internet of Things (IoT). By learning knowledge on local devices, data privacy preserving and Quality of Service (QoS) are guaranteed. Nevertheless, the dilemma between the limited on-device battery capacities and the high energy demands in learning is not resolved. When the on-device battery is exhausted, the edge learning process will have to be interrupted. In this article, we propose a novel wirelessly powered edge intelligence (WPEG) framework, which aims to achieve a stable, robust, and sustainable edge intelligence by energy harvesting (EH) methods. First, we build a permissioned edge blockchain to secure the peer-to-peer (P2P) energy and knowledge sharing in our framework. To maximize edge intelligence efficiency, we then investigate the wirelessly powered multiagent edge learning model and design the optimal edge learning strategy. Moreover, by constructing a two-stage Stackelberg game, the underlying energy-knowledge trading incentive mechanisms are also proposed with the optimal economic incentives and power transmission strategies. Finally, simulation results show that our incentive strategies could optimize the utilities of both parties compared with classic schemes, and our optimal learning design could realize the optimal learning efficiency.

Why is water illiquid?: The NQH2O water index futures

Jingjing Wang, Xiaoyang Wang

Summary: The newly launched water futures market is facing a serious illiquidity issue due to scarce trading volume. The primary causes of illiquidity include the heterogeneity and limited size of spot water markets, the opacity of the water futures settlement index, and the lack of public information on spot water market transactions.

Flow-pose Net: an effective two-stream network for fall detection

Kexin Fei, Chao Wang, Jiaxu Zhang, Yuanzhong Liu, Xing Xie, Zhigang Tu

Summary: This work presents a novel two-stream network, called FP-Net, which integrates optical flow and human pose information for robust and accurate fall detection in videos. By detecting human pose and estimating optical flow, appearance and motion features are extracted and fed into a classifier for fall classification. Experimental results show that FP-Net achieves state-of-the-art performance on two popular datasets.

Intercropping of Pennisetum sinese with Lolium perenne improved phytoextraction of heavy metal from soil

Wentong Zou, Zhi Cao, Yanjun Wang, Meifang Jin, Maozi Lin

Summary: Through studying the physiological indexes, heavy metal contents, and accumulation of two different plant species, Pennisetum sinese and Lolium perenne, under different planting patterns, it was found that intercropping resulted in higher heavy metal accumulation compared to monoculture. P. sinese had higher accumulation amounts of Pb, Cd, Cu, and Zn, indicating its suitability for phytoremediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils.

A DRL based cooperative approach for parking space allocation in an automated valet parking system

Jun Xie, Zhaocheng He, Yiting Zhu

Summary: Automated valet parking (AVP) is an advanced technology for improving parking efficiency and security. This study proposes a system-side deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based cooperative approach to solve the parking space allocation problem in a large AVP environment. The approach formulates the problem as a Markov decision process (MDP) and uses reward shaping and action embedding techniques to achieve better global AVP efficiency.

Optimization design of surface accuracy of SMC structure driven by space thermal radiation

Fengqun Pan, Xiangjun Jiang, Xingkun Dong, Jingli Du, Yanping Wang

Summary: In this paper, an optimal control strategy for surface accuracy of shape memory cable-net (SMC) structure under space thermal radiation is proposed. By introducing shape memory alloy (SMA) into the cable-net structure, the SMC structure with shape memory effect (SME) is able to transform space thermal radiation into a favorable factor for on-orbit adjustment of surface accuracy, achieving shape preservation of the cable-net antenna in space environment.

The effect of CSR on acquirer returns of cross-border M&As in an emerging market - a bane or a boom?

Jingjing Li, Xianming Wu

Summary: Enterprises in emerging markets increasingly prioritize social responsibility alongside economic development. However, existing literature lacks research on the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and acquirer returns in cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&As). This study examines 214 cross-border M&As in China from 2010 to 2019 and categorizes CSR into four components. The findings indicate that supplier and consumer responsibility, as well as the social contribution of enterprises, significantly promote acquirer returns in cross-border M&As, while shareholder responsibility and environmental responsibility have negative effects. This conclusion may be specific to the Chinese context of cross-border M&As.

Nonfragile robust exponential stabilization of nonlinear uncertain switched systems with actuator saturation

Jianlin Wang, Xinquan Zhang

Summary: This paper investigates the problem of overcoming controller vulnerability in nonlinear uncertain switched systems considering actuator saturation. The sufficient condition for nonfragile robust exponential stabilization is derived using the method of minimum dwell time. Switching law and nonfragile state feedback controllers are then designed to achieve robust exponential stabilization. Additionally, the design issue of controllers is transformed into a convex optimization problem with linear matrix inequalities (LMI) constraints, aiming to enlarge the estimation of domain of attraction for the closed-loop system.

Catalytic degradation of methylene blue by biosynthesized Au nanoparticles on titanium dioxide (Au@TiO2)

Yanan Wang, Tieliang Zhang, Yujie Zhao, Tong Lv, Wenjing Liu, Xiaowei Liu

Summary: This study reports the use of bacterial cells for the biosynthesis of Au@TiO2 as an efficient catalyst for the degradation of methylene blue. The bio-Au2@TiO2 catalyst showed the highest catalytic activity with a kinetics constant of 0.195 min(-1), and maintained stable activity for up to 10 cycles. The presence of Au nanoparticles on the bio-TiO2 layers decreased the band gap energy of TiO2, leading to the generation of abundant photogeneration hydroxyl radicals and enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Increase of bio-char yield by adding potassium salt during biomass pyrolysis

Guojun Yin, Fengzhou Zhang, Yuan Gao, Wenjing He, Qing Zhang, Shubin Yang

Summary: Adding potassium salts can increase the yield of bio-char, especially at temperatures between 400 and 600 degrees Celsius. This is mainly due to the deposition of volatiles on the potassium salts, which leads to an increase in both the yield and free radical concentration of bio-char.

High entropy liquid electrolytes for lithium batteries

Qidi Wang, Chenglong Zhao, Jianlin Wang, Zhenpeng Yao, Shuwei Wang, Sai Govind Hari Kumar, Swapna Ganapathy, Stephen Eustace, Xuedong Bai, Baohua Li, Marnix Wagemaker

Summary: High-entropy alloys/compounds with increased configurational entropy exhibit improved functional properties compared to conventional materials. In this study, the impact of increasing entropy in liquid electrolytes for rechargeable lithium batteries was demonstrated. The introduction of multiple salts in the electrolyte induced a larger diversity in solvation structures, enhancing lithium-ion diffusivity and the formation of stable interphase passivation layers. A low-concentration dimethyl ether electrolyte with four salts showed enhanced cycling stability and rate capability. These findings highlight the potential of high-entropy electrolytes for lithium batteries and beyond.
