Nijman, Luigi Titomanlio

Summary: This study aimed to assess the impact of non-pharmaceutical interventions on bronchiolitis outbreaks in 14 European countries. The study found that measures such as full lockdown, school closure, teleworking, and wearing masks indoors were associated with a reduction in bronchiolitis cases. These public health interventions can help alleviate the global burden of bronchiolitis.

Duration of immunity to SARS-CoV-2 in children after natural infection or vaccination in the omicron and pre-omicron era: A systematic review of clinical and immunological studies

Danilo Buonsenso, Francesca Cusenza, Lucrezia Passadore, Francesca Bonanno, Claudia De Guido, Susanna Esposito

Summary: This study reviewed the duration of immune memory and risk of reinfection in children previously infected with SARS-CoV-2 or vaccinated. The evidence suggests that children infected with SARS-CoV-2 develop long-lasting immunity but have reduced cross-reactivity against the Omicron variant. Vaccination, on the other hand, provides better cross-neutralization against both pre-Omicron and Omicron variants. Based on these findings, it is recommended to offer booster vaccinations to children infected before Omicron and to more vulnerable children infected with Omicron.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in COVID-19 critically ill patients one year after ICU discharge. The findings showed that these patients had lower HRQoL in terms of physical functioning, social functioning, and mental health, with 31.8% of them experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which was closely associated with reduced HRQoL. Female gender, history of cardiovascular disease, liver disease, and length of hospital stay were identified as risk factors for lower HRQoL, while weight gain at follow-up was a risk factor for PTSD.

Pharmacokinetics of Antimicrobials in Children with Emphasis on Challenges Faced by Low and Middle Income Countries, a Clinical Review

Kevin Meesters, Tinsae Alemayehu, Sofia Benou, Danilo Buonsenso, Eric H. Decloedt, Veshni Pillay-Fuentes Lorente, Kevin J. Downes, Karel Allegaert

Summary: Effective antimicrobial exposure is essential to treat infections and prevent antimicrobial resistance in low and middle income countries (LMIC). However, specific data on the pharmacokinetics of antimicrobials in children living in LMIC settings are scarce. This article outlines the effects of growth, maturation, and comorbidities on pharmacokinetics in LMIC children.

Lung perfusion assessment in children with long-COVID: A pilot study

Daniele Antonio Pizzuto, Danilo Buonsenso, Rosa Morello, Cristina De Rose, Piero Valentini, A. Fragano, Fabiana Baldi, Daniela Di Giuda

Summary: This pilot study used Tc-99m-MAA SPECT/CT to assess lung perfusion in children with Long-COVID, and found that 6 out of 14 children showed perfusion defects. Further research is needed to confirm these preliminary results and to better understand which children may benefit from this test and how to manage those with lung perfusion defects.

Case report: Post-COVID new-onset neurocognitive decline with bilateral mesial-temporal hypometabolism in two previously healthy sisters

Fabrizio Cocciolillo, Daniela Pia Rosaria Chieffo, Alessandro Giordano, Valentina Arcangeli, Ilaria Lazzareschi, Rosa Morello, Giuseppe Zampino, Piero Valentini, Danilo Buonsenso

Summary: This article describes the neurocognitive problems experienced by two sisters after being infected with SARS-CoV-2. Initially classified as psychological pandemic distress, they were later found to have significant brain hypometabolism. These findings further support the hypothesis that organic events cause persisting symptoms in children after COVID-19 infection.

Assessment for late developmental hip dysplasia in a cohort of infants with risk factors and normal hip ultrasound

Rosa Morello, Beatrice Bocchi, Francesco Mariani, Alice Bononi, Cristina Giuli, Nadia Bonfiglio, Piero Valentini, Ilaria Lazzareschi, Claudia Rendeli, Osvaldo Palmacci, Danilo Buonsenso

Summary: This study aimed to assess the possible occurrence of late developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in Italian children with risk factors but negative ultrasound screening results. The study found that out of 55 patients who met the inclusion criteria, only three had pathological examination results, but no abnormalities were found in X-ray. Further research is needed to clarify the late development of this condition.

A systematic review of quality and consistency of clinical practice guidelines on the primary prevention of food allergy and atopic dermatitis

Summary: This study conducted a comprehensive assessment of Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) for primary prevention of food allergy and atopic dermatitis. It found that although some guidelines had high quality, they performed poorly in terms of global applicability. The study calls for guideline developers to consider stakeholders' preferences, local applicability, and adapt existing recommendations to different geographical settings.

Allergic diseases as risk factors for Long-COVID symptoms: Systematic review of prospective cohort studies

Doreen Wolff, Karl Philipp Drewitz, Angela Ulrich, Doreen Siegels, Stefanie Deckert, Antonia Anabella Sprenger, Paula Ricarda Kuper, Jochen Schmitt, Daniel Munblit, Christian Apfelbacher

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate whether allergic diseases are risk factors for Long-COVID. The findings suggested that pre-existing asthma or rhinitis may increase the risk of Long-COVID, but the certainty of evidence was very low.
