The aim of the study was to test whether implants of 6 mm in length perform equally well as 10-mm implants in terms of survival and marginal bone-level changes when supporting single crowns. Patients with a posterior single-tooth gap were randomly allocated to either the placement of a 6-mm (test) or 10-mm implant (control). The treatment protocol allowed for internal sinus lift but not for lateral bone augmentation. After a healing period of 10 wk, implants were loaded with screw-retained single crowns. Survival rates, number of pockets >= 5 mm, and bleeding-on-probing were assessed clinically. The change of marginal bone level and crown-to-implant ratios were analyzed by 2 examiners. Longitudinal intragroup analyses for marginal bone levels were performed applying the Wilcoxon signed rank test. Intergroup differences at baseline and at 3 y were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test. The effect of implant length and crown-to-implant ratio on changes of marginal bone level also was determined. Of 94 implants placed (47 test and 47 control), 78 implants (40 test and 38 control) were available for follow-up examination at 3 y of loading. One test implant was lost during the second year. Hence, implant survival was not significantly different between the 2 groups after 3 y (98% test; 100% control). We found no significant change in the crestal bone level from baseline to 3 y for test and control implants with -0.19 +/- 0.62 mm and -0.33 +/- 0.71 mm, respectively. The intergroup difference was not significant. Crown-to-implant ratios were not associated with a statistically significant difference in marginal bone loss. However, the number of sites with pockets >= 5 mm was significantly higher in the test group. Based on the 3-y assessment, the use of 6-mm implants can be considered a viable option when reconstructing posterior single tooth gaps (German Clinical Trials Registry: DRKS00006290).

Summary: The DU-VASC model was developed and validated to assist in decision-making for the management of digital ulcers in patients with systemic sclerosis. The model showed that PI treatment was the most important predictor associated with reduced occurrence of digital ulcers.

The L-shape technique in guided bone regeneration with simultaneous implant placement in the esthetic zone: A step-by-step protocol and a 2-14 year retrospective study

Anina-Nives Zuercher, Leonardo Mancini, Nadja Naenni, Daniel-Stefan Thoma, Franz-Josef Strauss, Ronald-Ernst Jung

Summary: This study describes the L-shape technique in guided bone regeneration (GBR) with simultaneous implant placement and reports on its clinical, esthetic, and patient satisfaction outcomes up to 14 years of follow-up. The results show that the L-shape augmentation procedure is a reliable technique for GBR and simultaneous implant placement in the esthetic zone, with stable clinical and esthetic results and high levels of patient satisfaction.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the relative dentin abrasivity (RDA) and relative enamel abrasivity (REA) values of charcoal toothpastes. The results showed that the RDA and REA values of charcoal toothpastes did not differ significantly from previously tested commercially available toothpastes.

Effect of brushing force on the abrasive dentin wear using slurries with different abrasivity values

Blend Hamza, Laura Martinola, Philipp Korner, Andrea Gubler, Thomas Attin, Florian Just Wegehaupt

Summary: This study investigated the effects of abrasive slurries with different RDA values and increasing brushing forces on dentin wear. The results showed that the abrasivity of the slurry did not contribute to abrasive wear when the brushing force was kept at 1N. However, increasing the brushing force to 2N resulted in significantly higher abrasive wear, particularly with the use of a high abrasive slurry.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the wear of resin-based fissure sealants with different compositions properties under erosive, abrasive, and erosive/abrasive conditions. Results showed that sealants with higher filler content exhibited better wear resistance, while the addition of fluoride reduced the wear resistance of sealants at similar filler contents.

Summary: The benefits of early thromboprophylaxis in symptomatic COVID-19 outpatients remain unclear. This study presents the 90-day results from the OVID phase III trial, which showed that early thromboprophylaxis with enoxaparin did not improve the course of COVID-19 in terms of hospitalization, death, or resolution of symptoms.

Ten-Year Performance of Posterior 6-mm Implants with Single-Tooth Restorations: A Randomized Controlled Trial

P. Sahrmann, N. Naenni, R. E. Jung, C. H. F. Hammerle, T. Attin, P. R. Schmidlin

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes of short dental implants (TG) to longer implants (CG) with single crown restorations after 10 years. The results showed that the survival rates of TG and CG were 85.7% and 97.1%, respectively, with no significant difference between the two groups. The study concluded that short dental implants with single-crown restorations can be considered a valuable alternative, especially when vertical bone dimensions are limited.

Summary: In addition to seizure freedom, pediatric epilepsy surgery aims to stabilize and potentially optimize cognitive development. The study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the changes in intelligence or developmental quotients (IQ/DQ) before and after surgery in children with focal lesional epilepsy. The findings suggest stabilization of intellectual and developmental functioning at long-term follow-up. Cessation of antiseizure medication after achieving seizure freedom may further optimize intellectual and developmental trajectories in affected children.

Summary: This research investigated the effect of simplified adhesive strategies on the marginal integrity in primary molars. The results showed that universal adhesives applied in selective enamel etch or self-etch mode resulted in comparable marginal integrities when restoring class-II cavities in primary molars. Shortening the adhesive application time could lead to a reduction in the marginal integrity.
