Summary: The prevalence of dental anxiety in patients visiting primary care dental clinics in Bahrain was found to be 23.7% with moderate anxiety and 11.4% with high anxiety. Female patients had higher levels of anxiety compared to male patients. Significant differences in anxiety levels were observed in educated patients under the age of 50 and those with unpleasant previous dental experiences. Single anxiety management techniques were found to be more effective than combination techniques. Rests and breaks combined with any other technique of choice showed significant reduction in anxiety levels post treatment.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the impact of dental anxiety on dental care habits and oral-health-related quality of life in adults. By using the Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS) and the German Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-G5), the extent of dental anxiety was assessed. The findings revealed a significant correlation between elevated dental anxiety scores and reduced frequency of tooth brushing, calculus removal, and dental cleaning appointments. However, the use of dental floss, mouthwash, and toothbrush hardness were not significantly affected. Additionally, individuals with dental anxiety preferred manual toothbrushes over electric ones, and higher dental anxiety scores were strongly associated with a decline in overall oral health-related quality of life.

Summary: Dental fear and anxiety (DFA) is common and acts as a barrier to proper oral health behaviors and outcomes. This study presents a conceptual model that highlights the relationships between DFA, general anxiety/fear, sensory over-responsivity (SOR), and oral health behaviors and outcomes. The literature search provided evidence for the connections between these constructs, emphasizing the need for interventions to improve oral health behaviors, outcomes, and the experience of dental fear and anxiety.

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that oral-systemic medical links and oral hypo-function are increasingly extending beyond traditional clinical signs and symptoms of oral diseases. Research points to pathways leading to issues such as mastication deficiency, dysphagia, dementia, and certain cancers of the digestive system through oral-systemic measures in aging populations.

Summary: The study investigated 35 patients with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis receiving emergent endodontic treatment and found that expected pain relief before treatment is strongly associated with pain reduction, post-treatment relief, and post-treatment pain/anxiety. Expected pain relief also predicted the subgroups of low vs. moderate scores of post-treatment pain and anxiety.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between age-related changes in masseter muscle structure and the development of frailty. The results showed that frail individuals had smaller masseter muscle volume and this was associated with poorer nutrition status. Masseter volume index (MVI) may be a potential clinical index for evaluating frailty, as it affects oral functioning and nutrient intake.
