The optical properties and structure of ytterbium-doped barium titanium borate glasses were studied, and high emission cross-section values were found, making them suitable for laser and amplifier applications.
Barium titanium borate glasses doped with ytterbium ions were fabricated via standard melt quenching technique. The building structure of the glass matrices doped with ascendant ratios of ytterbium ions were studied using Raman and FTIR spectroscopies. The UV-Vis-NIR optical absorption spectra were investigated and used to calculate optical bandgaps, Urbach energies, refractive indices, metallization criterion, optical basicity, and dispersion parameters. The absorption and emission cross-sections and gain spectra for F-2(5/2) -> F-2(7/2) transition of ytterbium ions were investigated. The high values of the emission cross-sections of the studied glasses make them strong candidates for laser and amplifier applications.

Mono-crystalline Nanometer High Cristobalite Glass-ceramics from Nominal Pyroxene Glass

Amira M. EL-Rafei, Moenis A. Azooz, Esmat M. A. Hamzawy

Summary: Transparent glass prepared from nominal alkali pyroxene composition with the incorporation of Cr2O3 exhibited an increased crystallization temperature of high cristobalite. The glass-ceramic samples showed nanometer crystals of high cristobalite with moderate to excellent antimicrobial activity against both gram positive bacteria and pathogenic fungal yeast. Sample NMCr1 demonstrated excellent antifungal activity specifically against Candida albicans, indicating potential as an antifungal agent.

Optical, photoluminescence, and ESR spectral analysis of manganese ions in phosphate glasses melted under various conditions and impact of gamma irradiation

F. H. ElBatal, M. A. Azooz, Y. M. Hamdy, F. M. Ezz ElDin, S. M. Abo-Naf, H. A. ElBatal

Summary: Fluorophosphate glasses doped with MnO2 under varying melting conditions were studied using optical, FTIR, photoluminescence, and E.S.R spectroscopy. The results show that the spectral properties of the MnO2-doped glasses are influenced by the melting conditions, with changes observed in the FTIR spectra, photoluminescence intensity, and measurable divalent Mn2+ ions in the E.S.R spectra.

Experiments investigation of linear and third-order nonlinear optical properties of pure CuO thin film using femtosecond laser pulses

Mohamed Ashour, M. Sh Abdel-Wahab, Abdullah Shehata, Wael Z. Tawfik, M. A. Azooz, Souad A. Elfeky, Tarek Mohamed

Summary: This paper experimentally investigated the linear and third-order optical nonlinearities of a pure CuO thin film deposited on a soda-lime glass substrate. The film's structure and linear optical properties were measured using XRD, surface profilometer, and UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The Z-scan technique was used to measure the film's nonlinear optical properties under different excitation wavelengths and incident laser powers. The results showed a reduction in nonlinear absorption coefficient and nonlinear refractive index with increasing excitation wavelength, and wavelength-dependent optical limiting of the CuO thin film.

Summary: The glasses from the ternary system SiO2-Li2O-TiO2 with increasing titania content replacing silica were prepared by melting-annealing technique. The thermal and structural properties of the glasses were evaluated, showing an increase in coefficient of thermal expansion with titania content. X-ray diffraction and SEM investigations revealed the formation of different crystalline phases with increasing TiO2 content, impacting the mechanical properties of the glass.

Summary: Glasses with variable LiF contents were prepared and characterized in terms of optical, FTIR spectral properties, and thermal expansion parameters. Heat-treated glass-ceramics were also analyzed to determine their structural building groups and crystalline phases. The results show that the LiF content affects the material's softening temperature and the formation of different crystalline phases. SEM images support the X-ray diffraction data, showing variations in texture with high LiF content.
