Summary: Conservative treatment using above knee cast for refractured tibia after removal of Ilizarov external fixator following treatment of infected non-union tibia is effective in achieving union. However, complications such as skin irritation, deep venous thrombosis, and axial deviation can be expected.

Summary: Infections during wound healing are common complications in wound care that hinder the healing process and lead to non-healing wounds. Skin microbiota and the wound microenvironment contribute to the occurrence of skin infections, increasing morbidity and mortality rates. Effective treatment options, such as antimicrobial agents in wound dressings, have been found to reduce wound colonization and improve healing. This review paper discusses the impact of bacterial infections on wound healing phases and promising modifications of dressing materials, including antibiotics, nanoparticles, cationic organic agents, and plant-derived natural compounds, for antimicrobial wound dressings. The review article is based on scientific contributions from the PubMed database (supported with Google Scholar searching) over the past 5 years.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed cases from the past 5 years and found that bacterial cellulose dressing had better outcomes compared to allogenic skin in paediatric burn wounds after dermabrasion surgery. The BCD group had longer surgery time, shorter healing time, fewer dressing changes, and lower rates of skin grafting.

Summary: This study focused on pediatric and adolescent patients with infected non-unions of the femur, showing that the Ilizarov method of segmental bone transport was effective in treating the majority of infected non-unions. The results revealed a higher proportion of male patients and a common cause of fractures due to road traffic accidents.

Summary: The process of wound healing is often obstructed by bacterial infection. To achieve effective wound recovery, it is necessary to develop innovative strategies to alleviate infection. In this study, a self-activated composite dressing was developed, consisting of piezoelectric and photothermal functional layers, to combat wound infection and provide the desired treatment. This dressing can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) for antibacterial activity, and convert them into molecular oxygen (O2) to treat chronic hypoxia in infected wounds. Additionally, the dressing can enhance wound recovery through its photothermal activity.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of medical-grade honey with copper nanoparticles on the healing of infected or non-infected wounds. The results showed that the selected formulation had the same antibacterial potency as the medical-grade honey alone, and the addition of copper nanoparticles improved the maturation of collagen fibers and regulated the inflammatory process.

Summary: An inexpensive curative based on silver sulfadiazine (SS) and natural rubber latex (NRL) was developed to treat burn wounds, showing no interaction between drug and biopolymer in the infrared spectrum. The curative exhibited good mechanical properties, antifungal effects, and biocompatibility, representing a promising alternative for burn wound treatment.

Summary: This study demonstrates the rapid fabrication of copper cross-linked alginate antibacterial films using an electrodeposition method, allowing for controlled structure and copper content through electrical signal controlled release of copper ions. The films exhibit bactericidal activities and cytocompatibility dependent on the Cu2+ content, and effectively eliminate bacterial infection and suppress inflammatory responses in MRSA infected wound models. The electrodeposition method is shown to be a versatile and simple platform for designing alginate films with various functions.
