Accelerated weathering and chemical resistance of polyurethane powder coatings

Abstract

A study of the weathering mechanism of innovative polyurethane powder coatings has been performed. UV-B irradiation and condensation cycle accelerated tests were carried out on two different polyurethane powder coating formulations for outdoor applications. Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and microscope observation, it was possible to analyze the photochemical and morphological modifications. In addition, the color and gloss changes were measured. Organic coatings are often in contact with solvents in particular during cleaning actions. The chemical resistance was then studied considering the evolution of the corrosion barrier property of the coating as a function of the solvent contact time. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were carried out. Methylethylketone (polar) and xylene (apolar) were considered as representative solvents. Due to the strong polarity, the first solvent showed a strong interaction with the hydrogen bonds between the polyurethane chains causing the solvent uptake. The amount of solvent uptake depends on the coating chains rigidity caused by the different polyester resin monomers. The apolar xylene presented no significant interaction with the coatings.

Effect of NiO-NiCr2O4 nano-oxides on the microstructural, mechanical and corrosion properties of Ni-coated carbon steel

Summary: In this study, pure nickel and its composites with different percentages of Ni-Cr nano-oxides were coated over carbon steel to evaluate the coating features, mechanical properties, and corrosion behavior. The results showed that the nano-oxides were uniformly distributed in the nickel matrix for samples with concentrations ranging from 10 to 30 g/L. The coatings were flaw-free and crack-free, with the highest microhardness, thickness, and wear resistance observed at 30 g/L. The corrosion resistance increased with the nano-oxide concentration up to 30 g/L, but decreased at 40 g/L, with the sample at 50 g/L exhibiting the best corrosion resistance.

Influence of natural exposure on castor oil based polyurethane reinforced with waste tire rubber

Summary: Waste tire rubber (WTR) is generated extensively due to the growth of mobility needs and is constantly discharged into the environment with limited reuse options. This study explores the usage of WTR particles (5-20% by weight) in castor oil-based polyurethane foams, aiming to reduce fossil resource usage and contribute to a circular economy. The effects of photo-oxidation and hydrolysis on the foams' performance were analyzed by determining their morphological, thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties before and after exposure to open air. The results show that the addition of WTR increases foam density and reduces cell size, enhancing compressive behavior. After weathering, the degradation may lead to increased crosslinking density and structural changes, such as yellowing and voids. The rubber also slightly affects thermal stability and shows potential for improved fire retardancy.

Electrochemical nanoarchitectonics and analysis of PMMA/NiO based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

Summary: In this study, nanocomposites were prepared by spin coating, with NiO nanofillers incorporated into PMMA using the Pechini method. The interactions between the matrix and reinforcement were analyzed using FTIR spectroscopy. SEM images revealed the non-uniformity of circular void structures in homogenized PMMA. Electrochemical tests demonstrated redox reactions attributed to the addition of NiO in PMMA, with specific capacitance ranging from 119 to 407 mu F.g(-1) for PMMA/NiO 1% and 5%, respectively. EIS analysis showed typical behavior of capacitive materials. Complex capacitance values reached 35, 40, and 43 mu F.cm(-2) for PMMA/NiO. The results indicate the potential application of PMMA/NiO in electronic devices.

Weathering resistance (UV-shielding) improvement of a polyurethane automotive clear-coating applying metal-organic framework (MOF) modified GO nano-flakes (GO-ZIF-7)

Summary: In this research, ZIF-7 particles were synthesized over graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets and their influence on the weathering resistance and physical-mechanical performance of PU coatings was investigated. The PU/GO-ZIF-7 nanocomposite coating showed less changes in aesthetic properties, chemical structure, and topology after UV-A weathering exposure, resulting in better weathering stability performance. The addition of GO-ZIF-7 to PU also significantly increased the elongation at break and toughness of the nanocomposites compared to the control PU.

Summary: Liquid metals are considered as potential materials for fuel cell and battery applications due to their suitable redox potentials, fast redox kinetics, and active participation in electrode reactions. In this study, the electrochemical oxidation behavior of antimony-lead melts was investigated using a robust test setup at 700 degrees C, revealing two main contributions related to oxygen-ion transfer and oxidized species diffusion within the bulk of the melt.SEM and XRD analyses were used to support the findings on the electrode mechanisms.

Impact of ethyl cellulose variation on microstructural and electrochemical properties of spin coated YSZ electrolyte thin films for SOFCs: Slurry composition evolution

Summary: This study investigates the physical and electrochemical properties of slurry spin coated Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte thin films for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) applications. The concentration of ethyl cellulose (EC) in EC/YSZ/terpineol slurry is varied from 3.5 wt% to 6.5 wt%. The prepared YSZ thin films show polycrystalline nature with cubic phased prominent reflection corresponding to plane (111), and the crystallite size is determined to be in the range of 18-26 nm. The electrochemical properties confirm electrolytic response and the conductivity varies in the range of 10 4-10(-5) S/cm with the increase in EC content.

Tea polyphenol radical scavenger loaded UV absorber for corrosion resistant and weathering resistant epoxy coating fabrication

Summary: A robust coating with enhanced corrosion resistant and weathering resistant properties was developed by incorporating novel UV resistant fillers into epoxy matrix. The UV resistant filler was obtained by encapsulating tea polyphenol (TP), which functioned as the free radical scavenger, into mesoporous silica nanoparticles with UV absorption ability (MSN-TP). The incorporation of 2 wt% MSN-TP fillers in the epoxy matrix improved the barrier property of the coating by blocking the penetration of corrosive media. Furthermore, the combined effects of TP's free radical scavenging ability and MSN's UV shielding effect alleviated the weathering degradation of the epoxy coating, resulting in stabilized surface properties and good barrier performance during accelerated weathering exposure test.

An investigation of the wettability and chemical stability of superhydrophobic coatings on titanium

Summary: This study fabricated a superhydrophobic surface with outstanding corrosion resistance and chemical stability on a titanium substrate using a two-step process. The surface was treated with shot peening and chemical etching, and then modified with Methyltrichlorosilane (MTCS) to lower its surface energy. The impact of different tests on the wettability, corrosion resistance, and long-term stability of the superhydrophobic surface was investigated.

Effects of Nickel and Silicon Content on the Corrosion Inhibition of Weathering Steels in Simulated Coastal Environments

The inclusion of SDM practices in clinical guidelines is recommended.

Synergistic contribution of bio-based additives in wood paint: The combined effect of pigment deriving from spirulina and multifunctional filler based on carnauba wax

Summary: This study aims to investigate the synergistic behavior of two bio-based additives in a bio-based wood paint, namely spirulina powder extract as a natural pigment and carnauba wax as a multifunctional filler. The impact of these additives on the morphology and durability of the coatings was assessed through various tests and analyses. The results demonstrate that the combination of spirulina and wax enhances the aesthetic and protective properties of the paint.

From wood waste to wood protection: New application of black bio renewable water-based dispersions as pigment for bio-based wood paint

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of different quantities of a bio-renewable black pigment derived from wood waste on the durability of a bio-based wood paint. The pigment's effect on the coating's aesthetics is analyzed through colorimetric measurements and optical microscopy observations. Durability is assessed through exposure to UV-B radiation and continuous thermal shocks, with infrared spectroscopy analysis, colorimetric inspections, adhesion tests, and scanning electron microscope observations helping to analyze the pigment's influence on the paint's protective properties. Chemical resistance tests demonstrate that the pigment does not negatively affect the paint's polymeric matrix barrier performance. Thermal testing also shows that the black pigment increases heat absorption by the paint, making it suitable for energy-saving applications. Ultimately, this study highlights the potential of using a bio-renewable water-based dispersion as a functional pigment in bio-based wood paint, enhancing appearance without compromising protective performance.

Italian surgeons' perspective on the change in surgical activity and potential benefits from COVID-19 measures were evaluated through a nationwide online survey. In-situ measurement of electrochemical activity related to filiform corrosion in organic coated steel by scanning vibrating electrode technique and scanning micropotentiometry

Summary: This study presents a new approach to studying the mechanism of filiform corrosion in organic coated steel using the scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) and micropotentiometry (potentiometric SECM). The electrochemical activity under the coating was evaluated by mapping the ionic current densities coming from artificial defects made in specific locations of the filament. Antimony tips were also used to investigate the pH changes associated with different corrosion reactions at the metal-paint interface. Local pH levels along the filament in the anodic and cathodic regions were determined.

Prospective validation of the Israeli Score for the prediction of common bile duct stones in patients with acute calculous cholecystitis

Summary: This study validates the feasibility of the Israeli Score (IS) in predicting common bile duct stones (CBDS) in patients with acute calculous cholecystitis (ACC). The results show a linear trend between IS and the presence of CBDS, with higher rates of CBDS in patients with an IS of 3. The prediction model based on IS has a high accuracy and can help optimize the management of patients with ACC.

Summary: This study compared the 1-year clinical outcomes of a new imageless robotically assisted technique with an imageless navigated procedure in total knee arthroplasty. The results showed that the imageless robotic assisted surgery was associated with longer operative time but better pain perception and improved range of motion compared to the imageless navigated surgery.
