Summary: In order to address the challenges in analyzing certain biomolecules using liquid chromatography, researchers have developed a new hydrophilically modified hybrid surface (h-HST) for size exclusion chromatography and anion exchange separations. By incorporating additional oxygen and carbon atoms onto an ethylene bridge hybrid siloxane polymer, this surface reduces non-specific adsorption and undesired secondary interactions, resulting in improved separations of proteins and nucleic acids.

Summary: Counter-current chromatography, as a liquid-liquid partition chromatography technique, has advantages in large sample loading capacity without irreversible adsorption, and its separation process is greatly affected by factors including partition coefficient, two-phase solvent systems, apparatus, and operating parameters. The development of theoretical research to master the principles of counter-current chromatographic separations is essential to promote applications. Recent progress in separation prediction methods focuses on partition coefficient prediction, modeling the thermodynamic process, and modeling the dynamic process of counter-current chromatography.

Summary: In this study, a predictive model called the Cell Utilized Partitioning (CUP) model was developed to accurately predict the effluents in multicomponent separations in counter-current chromatography (CCC). The model was compared with experimental data and showed good agreement. The simulations using the CUP model also investigated the influence of operating and intrinsic parameters on the yield and productivity, as well as compared the separation performances of different modes under various conditions. The results provide generalized optimization and scaleup guidelines for maximizing CCC performance in research and industrial processes.

Summary: In this work, the possibility of switching the regioselectivity of C-H activation reactions by adding acids of different strengths was studied. The addition of no or weak acids causes the reaction to be controlled by a stronger directing group, while the addition of a strong acid leads to control by a weaker directing group. This approach enables the synthesis of non-symmetrical [2.2]-dipalladaparacyclophanes.

Summary: In this study, a combined strategy of untargeted metabolomics and machine learning was used to investigate the effects of rootstocks on the metabolites of HLB-affected sweet orange juices. A total of 2531 ion features were detected using high-resolution mass spectrometry, and 54 metabolites were identified as differential markers based on the random forest algorithm. The results revealed that rootstocks might regulate the physiological response against HLB by affecting glutamate, aspartate, proline, and arginine metabolism, as well as phenylalanine and phenylpropanoid metabolism. These findings provide new insights on the effects of rootstocks on the metabolites of HLB-affected sweet orange juices.

Summary: This study investigated the contribution of volatile and non-volatile metabolites to the flavor variation of five carambola cultivars using a combination strategy of GC-MS/O-based volatilomics and LC-MS-based metabolomics. Several significant flavor-related pathways were identified, including amino acid biosynthesis or metabolism, terpenoids, fatty acids, sugar and organic acid, and flavonoids. The results showed that flavor traits of different carambola cultivars differed due to the up- or downregulation of metabolites in the flavor-related pathways. This study provides a valuable reference for breeders and researchers interested in the regulation of flavor.

Summary: In this study, an ionic covalent organic framework (iCOF) surface grafting monolithic sorbent was prepared for in-tube solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of aristolochic acids (AAs) in various samples. The density of quaternary ammonium ions in the iCOF was modulated for enhanced adsorption of AAs. The iCOF surface grafting monolithic sorbent was confirmed by different means. Several operating conditions were optimized to develop the online in-tube SPME-HPLC method, which showed good linearity, low limits of detection, and high recoveries for AAs in serum samples.
