We aimed to evaluate the effect of 2100 MHz radiofrequency radiation emitted by a generator, simulating a 3G-mobile phone on the brain of rats during 10 and 40 days of exposure. The female rats were randomly divided into four groups. Group I; exposed to 3G modulated 2100 MHz RFR signal for 6 h/day, 5 consecutive days/wk for 2 weeks, group II; control 10 days, were kept in an inactive exposure set-up for 6 h/day, 5 consecutive days/wk for 2 weeks, group III; exposed to 3G modulated 2100 MHz RFR signal for 6 h/day, 5 consecutive days/wk for 8 weeks and group IV; control 40 days, were kept in an inactive exposure set-up for 6 h/day, 5 consecutive days/wk for 8 weeks. After the genomic DNA content of brain was extracted, oxidative DNA damage (8-hydroxy-2'deoxyguanosine, pg/mL) and malondialdehyde (MDA, nmoL/g tissue) levels were determined. Our main finding was the increased oxidative DNA damage to brain after 10 days of exposure with the decreased oxidative DNA damage following 40 days of exposure compared to their control groups. Besides decreased lipid peroxidation end product, MDA, was observed after 40 days of exposure. The measured decreased quantities of damage during the 40 days of exposure could be the means of adapted and increased DNA repair mechanisms. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the presence of indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase and bacterial translocation after the administration of 3-aminobenzamide and infliximab in the TNBS model of rat colitis. The results showed that infliximab treatment can decrease bacterial translocation by altering the expression of indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase compared with 3-aminobenzamide treatment. Combined treatments provide different approaches for new molecules related to indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase.

Does persistent organic pollutant PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) negative impacts on the aquatic invertebrate organism, Astacus leptodactylus [Eschscholtz, 1823]

Nesli Belek, Belda Erkmen, Aylin Sepici Dincel, Aysel Caglan Gunal

Summary: This study investigated the toxic effects of sublethal concentrations of PFOS on narrow-clawed crayfish. The results showed that PFOS exposure led to a decrease in total haemocyte counts and an increase in haemolymph total antioxidant status. Histopathological alterations were observed in hepatopancreas and gill tissues. The findings highlight the importance of understanding the early toxicological effects of PFOS on freshwater ecosystems, and suggest that A. leptodactylus is a reliable model for studying histopathological alterations and enzyme activities in toxicology studies.

Investigation of oxidative damage, antioxidant balance, DNA repair genes, and apoptosis due to radiofrequency-induced adaptive response in mice

Yusuf Kucukbagriacik, Mohammadreza Dastouri, Elcin Ozgur-Buyukatalay, Ozen Akarca Dizakar, Korkut Yegin

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether exposure to non-ionizing radiofrequency fields could induce an adaptive response in adult mice and to uncover the underlying molecular mechanisms. The findings of the study suggest that exposure to 900 MHz GSM signal can trigger an adaptive response in the RB group. The increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) may play a crucial role in triggering this response, along with the increase in the expression of genes involved in the DNA repair mechanism. The study highlights the protective reaction against bleomycin induced by RF radiation and the role of minimal oxidative stress in enabling the survival of cells through an adaptive response.
