Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease that causes high blood glucose levels and serious damage to various systems. Diabetic myopathy, which results in the loss of muscle mass and function, can further complicate the disease. It can also impact lung function and exercise tolerance.
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by high blood glucose levels, causing serious damage to the cardiovascular, respiratory, renal and other systems. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was 6.28% in 2017, considering all age groups worldwide (prevalence rate of 6,059 cases per 100,000), and its global prevalence is projected to increase to 7,079 cases per 100,000 by 2030. Furthermore, these individuals are often affected by diabetic myopathy, which is the failure to preserve muscle mass and function in the course of DM. This happens in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and T2DM. As skeletal muscle plays a key role in locomotion and glucose homeostasis, diabetic myopathy may contribute to additional complications of the disease. In addition, chronic hyperglycemia is associated with lung functional changes seen in patients with DM, such as reduced lung volumes and compliance, inspiratory muscle strength, and lung elastic recoil. Thus, the weakness of the inspiratory muscles, a consequence of diabetic myopathy, can influence exercise tolerance. Thus, moderate strength training in T2DM can contribute to the gain of peripheral muscle strength. Although the literature is robust on the loss of mass and consequent muscle weakness in diabetic myopathy, triggering pathophysiological factors, the impact on functional capacity, as well as the prescription of physical exercise for this condition deserves to be further explored. This review aims to explore the consequences of diabetic myopathy and its implication in rehabilitation from prescription to safety in the practice of physical exercises for these individuals.

Do the instruments used to assess fibromyalgia symptoms according to American College of Rheumatology criteria generate similar scores in other chronic musculoskeletal pain?

Andre Pontes-Silva, Ana Paula de Sousa, Almir Vieira Dibai-Filho, Marcelo Cardoso de Souza, Josimari Melo DeSantana, Mariana Arias Avila

Summary: This study compared the symptoms between fibromyalgia patients and other chronic musculoskeletal pain patients, and found that fibromyalgia patients experienced higher levels of pain and fatigue, greater impairment in functionality and global impact, and worse symptoms compared to other chronic pain patients.

Cross-cultural adaptation, reliability and validation of the Gillette Functional Assessment Questionnaire (FAQ) into Brazilian Portuguese in patients with cerebral palsy

Acacia Pinheiro Alvares Fernandes da Silva, Daniela Bassi-Dibai, Brunno Lima Moreira, Aline Dalfito Gava, Henrique Yuji Takahasi, Larissa Gustinelli Pereira Belo Salomao, Marcela Cacere, Fernanda de Freitas Thomaz, Almir Vieira Dibai-Filho

Summary: The purpose of this study was to translate, cross-culturally adapt and validate the Gillette Functional Assessment Questionnaire (FAQ) into Brazilian Portuguese. The results of the survey with a sample of 102 patients diagnosed with cerebral palsy confirmed the reliability and validity of the FAQ, indicating that it can be used as an effective tool for assessing functional gait mobility in Brazilian patients with cerebral palsy.

Is the six-minute step test able to reflect the severity and symptoms based on cat score?

Izadora M. Dourado, Polliana B. Santos, Cassia L. Goulart, Renan S. Marinho, Aldair Darlan Santos-De-Araujo, Meliza G. Roscani, Renata G. Mendes, Audrey Borghi-Silva

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between symptom severity using the CAT questionnaire and the performance of the 6MST in COPD patients. The results showed that patients with lower CAT scores performed better on the 6MST compared to those with higher CAT scores. There were also direct relationships between the 6MST performance and CAT scores, as well as the degree of obstruction measured by %FEV1.

Women with fibromyalgia (ACR criteria) compared with women diagnosed by doctors and women with osteoarthritis: Cross-sectional study using functional and clinical variables

Davi Oliveira da Silva Almeida, Andre Pontes-Silva, Almir Vieira Dibai-Filho, Sulamizia Filomena Costa-de-Jesus, Mariana Arias Avila, Cid Andre Fidelis-de-Paula-Gomes

Summary: The purpose of this study was to compare functional and clinical variables between women with fibromyalgia diagnosed by the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria, women diagnosed by doctors, and women with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). The results showed significant differences in widespread pain, symptom severity, global impact on quality of life, central sensitization, and catastrophizing between fibromyalgia patients diagnosed by the ACR criteria and those diagnosed by doctors or with KOA.

The Effect of Adding Noninvasive Ventilation to High-Intensity Exercise on Peripheral and Respiratory Muscle Oxygenation

Ssia da Luz Goulart, Flavia Rossi Caruso, Adriana S. Garcia de Araujo, Silvia Cristina Garcia de Moura, Aparecida Maria Catai, Polliana Batista dos Santos, Erika Z. Kabbach, Ross Arena, Renata Goncalves Mendes, Audrey Borghi-Silva

Summary: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) as an adjunct to high-intensity exercise (HIEx) in patients with coexisting COPD and heart failure (HF). The results showed that NIV as an adjunct to HIEx significantly improved vascular function and oxygenation in both respiratory and peripheral muscles. These findings may have implications for cardiopulmonary rehabilitation in patients with COPD-HF.

Non-invasive ventilatory support accelerates the oxygen uptake and heart rate kinetics and improves muscle oxygenation dynamics in COPD-HF patients

Rodrigo Polaquini Simoes, Cassia da Luz Goulart, Flavia Rossi Caruso, Adriana S. Garcia de Araujo, Silvia Cristina Garcia de Moura, Aparecida Maria Catai, Polliana Batista dos Santos, Patricia de Faria Camargo, Renan Shida Marinho, Renata Goncalves Mendes, Audrey Borghi-Silva

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) combined with high-intensity exercise on heart rate (HR) and oxygen uptake (V?O-2) recovery kinetics in patients with coexistence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and heart failure (HF). The results showed that NIPPV significantly improved V?O(2) and HR kinetics during high-intensity constant workload protocol compared to Sham ventilation. Additionally, NIPPV also improved oxygenation and reduced deoxygenation in the peripheral and respiratory muscles. These findings suggest that NIPPV can effectively enhance exercise tolerance and improve respiratory and peripheral muscle oxygenation in COPD-HF patients.
