Summary: This study examined the mediating role of handgrip strength in the relationship between moderate to vigorous physical activity and incident mild cognitive impairment and dementia. The results showed that moderate to vigorous physical activity was independently associated with a lower incidence of mild cognitive impairment, and handgrip strength partly mediated this association.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review to analyze the relationship between physical training variables and glycemic control in individuals with T2DM. The results showed that aerobic, resistance, and combined training interventions were associated with reductions in HbA1c and fasting glucose. However, the diversity of the physical exercise intervention protocols investigated in the studies limited the generalizability of the evidence.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in muscle strength, musculoskeletal symptoms, and physical performance over time in hospitalized COVID-19 patients and their relation with disease severity at admission. Significant improvement was observed in muscle strength, physical performance, and musculoskeletal symptoms over time, but they did not reach normal standards. Post-COVID-19 rehabilitation programs are needed to optimize the physical performance of these patients.

Summary: This study compared the effects of different aerobic training protocols on cardiometabolic variables in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The results showed that low-volume high-intensity interval training (HIIT) can improve cardiorespiratory capacity more effectively than low-volume moderate intensity continuous training (MICT). Other variables also showed improvements with all three training protocols.

Summary: This study explored the relationship between physical activity patterns and quality of life in type 2 diabetes patients from a major tertiary hospital in Ghana. The results suggest that regular walking can improve energy and mobility, sexual functioning, social burden, and disease management, while vigorous-intensity activities are negatively related to anxiety and worry.

Summary: Statin-associated muscle symptoms (SAMS) are common in patients using statin drugs, but not all symptoms are caused by the drugs, negative expectations could also play a role. Physical activity is important for managing cardiovascular disease risk, but the evidence of increased creatine-kinase levels in statin-treated athletes has been wrongly generalized. The potential of reducing sedentary behavior and resistance training has been overlooked in current guidelines.

Summary: This study investigated the associations between low cardiorespiratory fitness, lower-limb muscle strength, and cardiometabolic risk in older adults. The results showed that low cardiorespiratory fitness alone, or in combination with low lower-limb muscle strength, was associated with a higher risk of cardiometabolic problems. However, low lower-limb muscle strength alone was not associated with an increased risk.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis found that exergames may improve muscle strength in individuals with different health statuses, particularly in handgrip strength and knee extension MVIC. However, the effects on middle age/older adults were not significant, while exergames showed promising results in improving handgrip strength in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy. Future research with high methodological quality and large sample sizes are needed to further explore the effects and design principles of exergame interventions.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between symptom severity using the CAT questionnaire and the performance of the 6MST in COPD patients. The results showed that patients with lower CAT scores performed better on the 6MST compared to those with higher CAT scores. There were also direct relationships between the 6MST performance and CAT scores, as well as the degree of obstruction measured by %FEV1.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) as an adjunct to high-intensity exercise (HIEx) in patients with coexisting COPD and heart failure (HF). The results showed that NIV as an adjunct to HIEx significantly improved vascular function and oxygenation in both respiratory and peripheral muscles. These findings may have implications for cardiopulmonary rehabilitation in patients with COPD-HF.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) combined with high-intensity exercise on heart rate (HR) and oxygen uptake (V?O-2) recovery kinetics in patients with coexistence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and heart failure (HF). The results showed that NIPPV significantly improved V?O(2) and HR kinetics during high-intensity constant workload protocol compared to Sham ventilation. Additionally, NIPPV also improved oxygenation and reduced deoxygenation in the peripheral and respiratory muscles. These findings suggest that NIPPV can effectively enhance exercise tolerance and improve respiratory and peripheral muscle oxygenation in COPD-HF patients.
