The KoreaN cohort study for Outcomes in patients With Pediatric Chronic Kidney Disease (KNOW-Ped CKD) is a subcohort of KNOW-CKD aimed at investigating the characteristics of pediatric CKD in different countries and races. The study recruited children with stage 1 to 5 CKD aged younger than 18 years in seven major pediatric nephrology centers in Korea. The baseline profiles of 437 children were analyzed, showing a predominance of males and the most common etiology being congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract.
Background We developed the KoreaN cohort study for Outcomes in patients With Pediatric Chronic Kidney Disease (KNOW-Ped CKD) as a subcohort of KNOW-CKD to investigate the different characteristics of pediatric CKD between countries and races. Methods Children aged younger than 18 years with stage 1 similar to 5 CKD were recruited at seven major pediatric nephrology centers in Korea. Blood and urine samples, as well as demographic and clinical data, were collected. From 2011 to 2016, 458 children were enrolled, and the baseline profiles of 437 children were analyzed. Results The median age of the cohort was 10.9 years old, and 68.0% were males. The median estimated glomerular filtration rate was 53.1 mL/min/1.73 m(2). The most common etiology of CKD was congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (42.6%), followed by glomerulopathies (25.6%). Conclusion We report a cross-sectional analysis of the overall baseline characteristics such as age, CKD stage, and underlying kidney disease of the KNOW-Ped CKD. The cohort will be longitudinally followed for ten years.

Role of 16S Ribosomal RNA Analysis in Identification of Microorganisms in Febrile Urinary Tract Infection of Infants

Jae Hong Choi, Young Mi Yoon, Yoon-Joo Kim, Kyoung Hee Han

Summary: The objective of this study was to assess the role of 16S ribosomal RNA analysis in microbial identification in febrile infants diagnosed with urinary tract infection (UTI) and compare it with conventional culture results. The study found that 16S rRNA analysis showed a certain level of accuracy in identifying uropathogens, and could be used in combination with conventional culture methods to manage febrile UTI in infants.

Jae Won Oh, Sun Mi Kim, Deokjong Lee, Dong Keon Yon, Seung Won Lee, Lee Smith, Karel Kostev, Ai Koyanagi, Marco Solmi, Andre F. Carvalho, Jae Il Shin, Nak-Hoon Son, San Lee

Summary: This study utilized datasets from Brazil, China, Europe, Korea, the UK, and the US to investigate the association between handgrip strength and depression in middle and older aged adults. The results showed that lower handgrip strength was associated with an increased likelihood of depression. Early assessment of handgrip strength may help identify individuals at risk for depression among this population.

National trends in the prevalence of chronic kidney disease among Korean adults, 2007-2020

Soo-Young Yoon, Hye Won Park, Hyeon Jin Kim, Andreas Kronbichler, Ai Koyanagi, Lee Smith, Jae Il Shin, Sang Youl Rhee, Seung Won Lee, Jin Sug Kim, Hyeon Seok Hwang, Dong Keon Yon, Kyunghwan Jeong

Summary: The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in 2020. This study provides the first large-scale investigation into the longitudinal prevalence of CKD from 2007 to 2020, and further research is needed to understand the reasons for this decline and develop healthcare policy strategies for CKD prevention and management.

Summary: It is necessary to examine the trend in suicide-related behaviors among adolescents in South Korea over a longer period, including during COVID-19, as it is difficult to draw conclusions about the association between COVID-19 and a decrease in suicide attempts based on short-term comparisons. This study found that during the pandemic, the prevalence of sadness/despair and suicidal ideation and attempts among South Korean adolescents was higher than expected, indicating the need for further research on the impact of the pandemic on mental health and the establishment of prevention strategies for suicide ideation and attempts.

Haploinsufficiency of EXT1 and Heparan Sulphate Deficiency Associated with Hereditary Multiple Exostoses in a Pakistani Family

Muhammad Ajmal, Hafsah Muhammad, Muhammad Nasir, Muhammad Shoaib, Salman Akbar Malik, Irfan Ullah

Summary: This study investigated a Pakistani family with hereditary multiple exostoses (HME) and identified a heterozygous deletion (c.247Cdel) in exon 1 of the EXT1 gene, resulting in a frameshift mutation (p.R83GfsX52) and an alternative open reading frame (ORF3). The linkage analysis revealed that the HME family is linked to the EXT1 locus 8q24.1. The findings suggest that haploinsufficiency and the predicted ORF3 protein may play important roles in the pathogenesis of HME.
