Summary: The study investigated the association of urinary angiotensinogen (UAGT) with renal outcomes in patients with non-dialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD). The results showed that high UAGT level is associated with adverse renal outcomes, which is influenced by certain clinical contexts. Further studies are needed to validate the predictive role of UAGT as a biomarker for renal outcomes in CKD.

Summary: The study found a significant association between smoking and worsening kidney function in CKD patients, with higher pack-years of smoking correlating with higher risk of adverse kidney outcomes. Quitting smoking was shown to potentially delay CKD progression, suggesting it is a modifiable factor in managing the disease.

A simple radiographic examination of the lateral abdomen can help stratify cardiovascular risk in this population.

Summary: This study investigated the intelligence levels and risk factors for low intelligence in children and adolescents with CKD, finding that participants with short stature, failure to thrive, more severe CKD stage, longer duration of CKD, and those who were Medicare or Medicaid beneficiaries had significantly lower intelligence levels. The association between intelligence and longer duration of CKD and growth failure remained significant after controlling for demographic and clinical variables, highlighting the importance of early interventions such as kidney transplantation.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between serum non-HDL-C levels and cardiovascular outcomes in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease patients. The study found that high serum non-HDL-C levels were associated with an increased risk of adverse cardiovascular outcomes, and this association was not affected by clinical factors such as age, gender, body mass index, estimated glomerular filtration rate, and albuminuria.

Summary: The relationship between 24-h urinary phosphorus excretion (24 h UPE) and cardiovascular disease in pre-dialysis CKD patients is not well-studied. This study found that low 24 h UPE is associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes in CKD patients, indicating that it should not be relied upon as a marker for dietary phosphorus restriction.

Summary: This study indicates that there is a clear association between low BMD and all-cause mortality in patients with nondialysis CKD. Osteoporosis is significantly associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality, while osteopenia does not have a significant association. This suggests that the routine measurement of BMD may have additional benefits beyond predicting fracture risk in this population.

Summary: The NURTuRE-CKD cohort is a prospective study that aims to investigate risk factors for adverse outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The study found that a majority of participants were in high-risk CKD categories, with the primary renal diagnosis being unknown cause. Older participants with lower estimated glomerular filtration rate had higher blood pressure and were less likely to be treated with renin-angiotensin system inhibitors, but were more likely to receive a statin.

Summary: The objective of this study was to assess the role of 16S ribosomal RNA analysis in microbial identification in febrile infants diagnosed with urinary tract infection (UTI) and compare it with conventional culture results. The study found that 16S rRNA analysis showed a certain level of accuracy in identifying uropathogens, and could be used in combination with conventional culture methods to manage febrile UTI in infants.

Summary: This study utilized datasets from Brazil, China, Europe, Korea, the UK, and the US to investigate the association between handgrip strength and depression in middle and older aged adults. The results showed that lower handgrip strength was associated with an increased likelihood of depression. Early assessment of handgrip strength may help identify individuals at risk for depression among this population.

Summary: The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in 2020. This study provides the first large-scale investigation into the longitudinal prevalence of CKD from 2007 to 2020, and further research is needed to understand the reasons for this decline and develop healthcare policy strategies for CKD prevention and management.

Summary: The study aimed to summarize the evidence on sleep alterations in medication-naive children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Sixteen observational studies were included, with a total of 981 ASD patients and 1220 typically developing individuals. The results showed that medication-naive ASD patients had significantly poorer sleep quality compared to the typically developing group, with longer sleep latency, reduced sleep efficiency, difficulties in initiating and maintaining sleep, and sleep hyperhidrosis.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze trends in mean BMI, obesity, and overweight among Korean adolescents, including the mid-stage of the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings showed a gradual increase in BMI and prevalence of obesity and overweight over the past 17 years, but the increase during the pandemic was less significant than before. These results emphasize the importance of implementing practical prevention measures against youth obesity and overweight.

Summary: It is necessary to examine the trend in suicide-related behaviors among adolescents in South Korea over a longer period, including during COVID-19, as it is difficult to draw conclusions about the association between COVID-19 and a decrease in suicide attempts based on short-term comparisons. This study found that during the pandemic, the prevalence of sadness/despair and suicidal ideation and attempts among South Korean adolescents was higher than expected, indicating the need for further research on the impact of the pandemic on mental health and the establishment of prevention strategies for suicide ideation and attempts.

Summary: This study investigated a Pakistani family with hereditary multiple exostoses (HME) and identified a heterozygous deletion (c.247Cdel) in exon 1 of the EXT1 gene, resulting in a frameshift mutation (p.R83GfsX52) and an alternative open reading frame (ORF3). The linkage analysis revealed that the HME family is linked to the EXT1 locus 8q24.1. The findings suggest that haploinsufficiency and the predicted ORF3 protein may play important roles in the pathogenesis of HME.
