The karst bauxites of the Parnassos-Ghiona Unit in Greece are hosted within carbonate rocks from the Upper Jurassic to Late Cretaceous. This study focuses on the characteristics of the B3 horizon, including prevailing oolitic texture and major mineral components such as diaspore, boehmite, hematite, and goethite. Minor phases like kaolinite, rutile, and anatase are also present. The three-stage genesis of the bauxite is reflected in complex correlations between major, minor, and trace elements. Detrital minerals like chromite and serpentine indicate the presence of mafic parental rocks, likely originating from nearby ophiolite suites.
The karst bauxites of the Parnassos-Ghiona Unit (Greece) are hosted within Upper Jurassic to Late Cretaceous carbonate rocks. Three bauxite horizons are intercalated within shallow water limestones. They are named B1, B2 and B3 from bottom to top. In this study we present the characteristics of the B3 horizon (CenomanianTuronian) sampled in Agia Anna, Variani and Shila 1 underground mines. The bauxite ore has a prevailing oolitic texture. Diaspore, boehmite, hematite and goethite are the major mineral components of the analyzed samples. Kaolinite, rutile and anatase are common minor phases. Pyrite occurs in a small number of samples. Ilmenite, rutile, chromite, zircon, baddeleyite and serpentine are common detrital minerals. Authigenic minor minerals are mostly represented by REE-phosphates, barite, and gypsum. The presence of pyrite and diaspore suggests that after a first stage of additional in situ weathering and bauxitization, the deposits were affected by early diagenetic reducing conditions (allowing the formation of pyrite) and significant diagenesis, resulting in diaspore formation. This three-stages genesis is reflected in complex correlations between major, minor and trace elements. The occurrence of detrital chromite and serpentine in the bauxite reflects mafic parental rocks. The mafic component likely originated from the ophiolite suites exposed in the vicinity of the Parnassos-Ghiona bauxites.

Laparoscopic Management of Remnant Cystic Duct Stump Stones

Roberto Peltrini, Marco Visconti, Maria Michela Di Nuzzo, Francesco Corcione

Summary: We present a case of a 56-year-old woman with a history of open cholecystectomy twenty-seven years ago, who experienced post-cholecystectomy syndrome characterized by abdominal discomfort, dyspepsia, jaundice, and pain in the right hypochondrium. A diagnosis of residual cystic duct stones was suggested, and a minimally invasive surgical approach was preferred.

Summary: This study compared the effects of two different blood pressure management strategies, hypotension-avoidance and hypertension-avoidance, on major vascular complications after noncardiac surgery. The results showed that both strategies had similar incidence of major vascular complications.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, digital media has been increasingly used in various areas of medical practice to minimize personal contact. This study aimed to investigate whether remote pre-anesthesia consultation, supported by an online video, could replace on-site consultation for parents of children receiving MRI examinations under sedation without compromising quality.

Summary: The introduction of digital patient documentation systems in German hospitals and intensive care units is increasing. This study aims to analyze the effects of digital documentation on the workflow of nurses compared to paper-based documentation in terms of workload, workflow changes, usability, time required, and documentation quality. The results show that digital patient documentation does not save working time, but it does improve the documentation workflow and has the potential to enhance documentation quality.

Prehospital Misdiagnosed Acute Coronary Syndrome-Incidence, Discriminating Features, and Differential Diagnoses

Josefin Grabert, Ulrich Heister, Andreas Mayr, Tobias Fleckenstein, Andrea Kirfel, Christian Staerk, Maria Wittmann, Markus Velten

Summary: Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is a common disease that causes increased morbidity and mortality in the western world. However, there is a lack of data on the accuracy of ACS diagnosis and common misdiagnoses. This study aimed to evaluate the frequency and types of misdiagnoses and identify distinguishing features. The results of the retrospective cohort study showed that misdiagnosed ACS accounted for 61.8% of the cohort.

Effects of Different Hemoglobin Levels on Near-Infrared Spectroscopy-Derived Cerebral Oxygen Saturation in Elderly Patients Undergoing Noncardiac Surgery

Achilles Delis, Derek Bautz, Heidi Ehrentraut, Karin Doll, Thomas M. Randau, Andreas C. Strauss, Ivana Habicht, Erdem Gueresir, Holger Bogatsch, Peter Kranke, Maria Wittmann, Patrick Meybohm, Markus Velten

Summary: This study aimed to assess whether surgery-related anemia can be detected via near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) of cerebral oxygen saturation and to investigate the effects of different perioperative transfusion strategies on cerebral oxygenation. The results showed that cerebral oxygen saturation correlated with hemoglobin decline during surgery, and different transfusion strategies had an impact on cerebral oxygenation. These findings provide valuable information for individualized transfusion decision-making.

Summary: Initial evidence suggests that preoperative administration of omega-3 fatty acids can reduce postoperative inflammatory reaction. However, the effects of immunonutrition with omega-3 fatty acids on inflammatory response in abdominal surgery patients are still unclear. This study found no significant difference in inflammatory markers or postoperative length of hospital stay between the preoperative omega-3 fatty acids group and the control group.

Summary: In this multicenter randomized trial, the study aimed to compare the efficacy of femoral and axillary cannulation in minimally invasive heart valve surgery and determine the risk of postoperative stroke. The results showed that axillary cannulation had a lower risk of stroke within 7 days postoperatively, suggesting it may be a better alternative.

Source rock potential and spatial distribution of the stratigraphic formations in the central Mediterranean Ridge: Evidence from mud volcanic deposits and 2D seismic data

Anastasios Nikitas, Georgios Makrodimitras, Maria V. Triantaphyllou, Nikolaos Pasadakis, Kimon Christanis, Stavros Kalaitzidis, Grigoris Rousakis, Ioannis Panagiotopoulos, Alexandra Gogou, Alexandros Papadopoulos, Efthimios Tartaras, Aristofanis Stefatos

Summary: Due to the lack of deep wells in the broader region, studying mud volcanic deposits can improve the geological understanding of the Mediterranean Ridge. In this study, biostratigraphic and geochemical analyses were performed on mud breccia deposits from five Mud Volcanoes in the central MR. The results indicate the origin of these deposits and provide insights into the source rock potential. Seismic data is also used to determine the distribution of major lithostratigraphic formations.
