Hydroxamates (HX) are major secondary metabolites synthesized by rye and are responsible for some of the unique properties of this cereal, including good tolerance of biotic and abiotic stresses and allelopathy. Recently, five genes encoding enzymes taking part in HX biosynthesis have been sequenced and characterized, which was the starting point to undertake the present study. Association analysis of the content of six HX-HBOA (2-hydroxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one), GDIBOA (2,4-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4H)-one glucoside), DIBOA (2,4-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4H)-one), GDIMBOA (2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4H)-one glucoside), DIMBOA (2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4H)-one) and MBOA (6-methoxy-benzoxazolin-2(3H)-one) in the above-ground parts of plants and roots was performed on a population consisting of 102 and 121 diverse inbred lines, in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Altogether, 48 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were found to be associated with the content of at least one HX: 20 SNPs were associated with HX synthesized in the above-ground parts of rye plants (AG-SNP), and 28 were associated with HX synthesized in the roots (R-SNP). The highest number of SNPs was present in genes ScBx1 (9) and ScBx5 (11). The majority of SNPs were affected by environmental factors, except for two: ScBx4_1702 associated with GDIBOA and MBOA contents, and ScBx5_1105 associated with HBOA content in roots.

Justyna Lalak-Kanczugowska, Natalia Witaszak, Agnieszka Waskiewicz, Jan Bocianowski, Lukasz Stepien

Summary: Fusarium proliferatum is a common hemi-biotrophic pathogen that infects a wide range of host plants, leading to significant crop losses. In this study, the effects of selected plant metabolites on the metabolism of F. proliferatum were analyzed. The results showed that some metabolites promoted fungal growth while others inhibited it.

Studies of Oat-Maize Hybrids Tolerance to Soil Drought Stress

Tomasz Warzecha, Roman Bathelt, Edyta Skrzypek, Marzena Warchol, Jan Bocianowski, Agnieszka Sutkowska

Summary: The environmental conditions have an impact on the growth and productivity of crop plants. Among the various factors, drought stress is identified as one of the major threats to plant productivity. This research focused on evaluating the physiological, biochemical, and agronomic parameters of OMA plants under soil drought conditions. The results showed that most of the examined lines exhibited reduced photosynthetic pigment content, PSII photosystem activity, and yield-related traits under drought stress. However, two lines (9 and 78b) were found to retain high yielding potential compared to the commercial cv. Bingo under drought stress.

Green Leaf Volatile Function in Both the Natural Defense System of Rumex confertus and Associated Insects' Behavior

Dariusz Piesik, Jacek Lyczko, Krzysztof Krawczyk, Magdalena Gantner, Jan Bocianowski, Veronika Ruzsanyi, Chris A. A. Mayhew

Summary: This study aims to determine the similarity between the profile of green leaf volatiles (GLVs) naturally produced by undamaged plants and those provoked by chemical stimulants. It also investigates the influence of sex and mating status on the reproductive choices of Apion miniatum beetles. Additionally, it assesses the use of chemically stimulated GLV emissions as a means to attract pests for biological control of Rumex confertus.

Improving the Selection Efficiency of Breeding Material within Interspecific Brassicaceae Hybrids with Genomic Prediction and Phenotyping

Justyna Szwarc, Janetta Niemann, Jan Bocianowski, Joanna Kaczmarek, Mehmet Zafer Dogu, Alicja Nowicka

Summary: The study evaluated the usefulness of markers linked to blackleg resistance and genes influencing major morphological characteristics for the selection of Brassicaceae hybrids. Useful SSR markers were identified, including markers mstg004 and mstg027 connected to flower color, and marker mstg038 associated with stem color. Field trials also helped select rapeseed hybrids with low blackleg infestation. The functionality of resistance-linked markers was confirmed, highlighting the importance of interspecific hybridization and marker-assisted selection.

QTLxQTLxQTL Interaction Effects for Total Phenolic Content of Wheat Mapping Population of CSDH Lines under Drought Stress by Weighted Multiple Linear Regression

Adrian Cyplik, Ilona Mieczyslawa Czyczylo-Mysza, Joanna Jankowicz-Cieslak, Jan Bocianowski

Summary: This paper suggests using weighted multiple linear regression to estimate the triple interaction of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) effects. The results showed that weighted regression improved the evaluation of the aaa(gw) parameter compared to aaa(p) in most cases, while unweighted regression improved the QTLxQTLxQTL interaction effects. The coefficients of determination for the weighted regression model were significantly higher, indicating the significant effect of the three-way interaction on quantitative traits expression.

Expression Profiling of the Slow Rusting Resistance Genes Lr34/Yr18 and Lr67/Yr46 in Common Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and Associated miRNAs Patterns

Julia Spychala, Agnieszka Tomkowiak, Aleksandra Noweiska, Roksana Bobrowska, Jan Bocianowski, Michal Ksiazkiewicz, Aleksandra Sobiech, Michal Tomasz Kwiatek

Summary: The main efforts in common wheat breeding focus on yield, grain quality, and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Rust diseases, including leaf rust caused by Puccinia triticina, are a major threat to global wheat cultivation. The study investigated the early transcriptomic responses of two major wheat APR genes, Lr34 and Lr67, and three complementary miRNAs, tae-miR9653b, tae-miR9773, and tae-miR9677b, to inoculation with P. triticina. The expression profiles of the APR genes and miRNAs varied between varieties and time-points, but the expression of Lr34 and Lr67 genes in studied cultivars was significantly higher than in a control line carrying susceptible alleles.

Meta-Analysis of Influence of Diversity of Parental Forms on Heterosis and Specific Combining Ability of Their Hybrids

Jan Bocianowski, Kamila Nowosad, Henryk Bujak

Summary: Knowledge of the genetic potential and variation in parental forms is crucial for shortening the breeding process and achieving desired traits in hybrids. The effects of heterosis and specific combining ability can be predicted through selection of genetically diverse parental forms. Preliminary studies suggest that selecting phenotypically equal but genetically diverse parental forms is the best approach for obtaining favorable hybrids.
