A PH3-assisted annealing strategy was designed to synthesize atomically dispersed TM-SAs (CCoNiP), which showed increased catalytic activity and effective degradation of TCBPA under visible light irradiation.
Transition metal single atoms (TM-SAs) coordinated with highly electronegative N atoms often suffer from low activity and poor stability, which limiting their application in catalysis. To solve it, a PH3-assisted annealing strategy is designed to synthesize atomically dispersed TM-SAs (CCoNiP), which is stemmed from a pyrolysis approach of pre-designed CoNi layered double hydroxide (LHD) as a soft-template, and further coordinated with P atoms for adjusting the coordination environment. Characterization results show that the atomically dispersed Co and Ni atoms anchor on the carbon nitride substrate with Co/Ni-N3P1 coordination sites. Combined with density functional theory calculations, it is confirmed that multiple coordination sites of Co/Ni-N and Co/Ni-P can modulate d-band center position which increases the catalytic activity of TM-SAs. The formed multiple midgap levels can extend optical absorption ranges. Meanwhile, P-introduction can change the coordination environment, suppress the conversion trend of SAs to high valence state and improve electron separation. All the above characteristics can improve effective degradation from Tetrachlorobisphenol A (TCBPA) under visible light irradiation, achieving 100% removal and 44.1% dechlorination rate.

Sliding gusset connections for improved seismic performance of BRB-RC frame: Damage-control design and subassemblage tests

Summary: In this study, two innovative sliding gusset connections are proposed to mitigate the negative frame-to-gusset interaction in buckling-restrained brace (BRB) reinforced concrete frames (RCFs). A damage-control design procedure is presented to prevent undesirable failure of the BRB-RCF joint. Cyclic tests of five BRB-RCF subassemblages were conducted to evaluate the sliding mechanism and the effectiveness of the design procedure.

Soil metagenome and metabolome of peanut intercropped with sorghum reveal a prominent role of carbohydrate metabolism in salt-stress response

Summary: Soil metabolomics and metagenome sequencing were used to investigate the salt-stress response in peanuts intercropped with sorghum. The study found that carbohydrate metabolism was the most differentially expressed pathway, with certain metabolites more abundant in intercropped peanuts under salt stress. In addition, there was a higher abundance of specific microbial taxa in intercropped peanuts under salt stress. These findings suggest that intercropping can indirectly influence beneficial microbial communities and potentially enhance peanut's salt tolerance.

Photonic spin Hall effect with high coupling efficiency in the combined structure of periodic dielectric waveguides and photonic crystal waveguide

Summary: In this paper, the photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) in the combined structure of periodic dielectric waveguides (PDWs) and photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) is discussed. The arbitrary manipulation of PSHE for the PDW guided mode in the structure is successfully achieved by controlling the polarization of the dipole source. The advantage of PDW is its ability to be designed to different shapes without geometric constraints, while maintaining a relatively high transmission rate. By further changing the structure, including the adjustment of the intersection angle between PDW and PCW, and the alteration of the straight PDW to the bending or bifurcated shapes, it is found that the output of highly unidirectional PSHE is mainly determined by the intersection angle between PDW and PCW and almost independent of the detailed shape of PDW.

Effects of Exogenous Auxin on Mesocotyl Elongation of Sorghum

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the physiological mechanism of exogenous auxin (IAA) promoting mesocotyl elongation in sorghum. The results showed that exogenous IAA significantly increased cell length and promoted mesocotyl elongation in the short mesocotyl inbred line MS24B, while the application of the IAA inhibitor NPA resulted in a significant decrease in mesocotyl length. In the long mesocotyl inbred line Z210, exogenous IAA had a slight effect on mesocotyl elongation, while NPA treatment considerably reduced mesocotyl length. Overall, exogenous IAA activated energy metabolism, leading to plasma membrane acidification and mesocotyl elongation.

Effects of using WeChat/WhatsApp on physical and psychosocial health outcomes among oncology patients: A systematic review

Summary: The purpose of this systematic review is to summarize the potential effects of WeChat and WhatsApp mobile applications in cancer management. The review included 20 studies with a total of 3110 participants and found that using WeChat/WhatsApp had positive effects on pain management, medication adherence, self-efficacy, quality of life, and depression among oncological patients. The review also highlighted the need for future research in diverse populations and countries to understand the effects of WeChat/WhatsApp in different contexts.

Raising Dogs that Bite: How Pastoralists and Breeders Care for Tibetan Mastiffs

Summary: This paper discusses the commodification of Tibetan Mastiffs and the care relationship between humans and dogs. Tibetan pastoralists and dogs have a reciprocal yet distanced care relationship, while breeders of Tibetan Mastiffs focus on their ferociousness, resulting in a more dedicated but unilateral and dangerous care approach. The unintended consequence of breeders' care is that they raise dogs that sometimes bite, due to the transformation of dogs' guarding abilities from ethical virtue to commercial value.

From celebration to contamination: Analysing microplastics released by burst balloons

Targeting metabolic and epigenetic reprogramming in macrophages induced by PM is a promising strategy for COPD treatment.

Electrocatalytic degradation of nitrogenous heterocycles on confined particle electrodes derived from ZIF-67

Summary: Co/NC/PAC electrode was prepared by compounding ZIF-67 with powder-activated carbon for the electrocatalytic treatment of nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds. The degradation efficiency of the four compounds reached 90.2-93.7% under optimal conditions, and the degradation order was pyridazine < pyrimidine < pyrazine < pyridine.

Trophic transfer and their impact of microplastics on estuarine food chain model

The effect of synthesis conditions on the in situ grown MIL-100(Fe)-chitosan beads: Interplay between structural properties and arsenic adsorption

Phthalate metabolites in breast milk from mothers in Southern China: Occurrence, temporal trends, daily intake, and risk assessment

Summary: This study measured the levels of phthalate metabolites in breast milk collected from mothers in southern China. The increasing exposure to certain phthalates calls for further research into their sources and potential risks.

The relationships between microorganisms in the mesopelagic layer are more complex and stable, with Proteobacteria and Actinobacteriota playing important roles.

Abatement of antibiotics and resistance genes during catalytic ozonation enhanced sludge dewatering process: Synchronized in volume and hazardousness reduction

Summary: Based on the efficiency of catalytic ozonation techniques in enhancing sludge dewaterability, this study investigated its effectiveness in simultaneous reduction of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes. The results showed that catalytic ozonation conditioning changed the distribution of antibiotics and achieved high degradation rates. It also significantly reduced the abundance of ARGs, inhibited horizontal gene transfer, and decreased the signal transduction of typical ARGs host bacteria.

Improvement of Fe(III)/percarbonate system by molybdenum powder and tripolyphosphate: Co-catalytic performance, low oxidant consumption, pH-dependent mechanism

The presence of Mo and STPP resulted in a higher degradation rate of the model pollutant SMX, with low oxidant consumption. The system generated multiple active species through a series of chain reactions at different pH values, exhibiting excellent performance towards electron-rich pollutants. Furthermore, Mo demonstrated excellent stability and reusability.
