This study aimed to explore and compare the learning curves for static computer-assisted surgery (s-CAIS) and dynamic computer-assisted implant surgery (d-CAIS) in beginners. The results showed that there was a learning curve effect in d-CAIS but not in s-CAIS in vitro tests. As the practice progressed, accuracy improved in the d-CAIS group but not in the s-CAIS group.
Background Static computer-assisted surgery (s-CAIS) and dynamic computer-assisted implant surgery (d-CAIS) are the main digital approaches in guiding dental implant placement. Purpose The aim of this study was to explore and compare the learning curves for s-CAIS and d-CAIS by beginners. Materials and Methods Three dental students used each dental model for drilling five positions with missing teeth. Operators performed the drilling test for five sets of dental models with an interval of 7 +/- 1 days assisted by the d-CAIS system. After a six-month break, the same students performed the drilling test again in the same way but with the s-CAIS system. A total of thirty models were used, and 150 implants were inserted. The operation time and relative deviations were recorded and calculated. Correlations between various deviation parameters and attempts were tested with independent-samples Kruskal-Wallis tests. Results A significant difference between the two groups was found in the operation time (p < .001). For accuracy, the difference was found in the first attempt of coronal and apical deviations but disappeared as the training went on. As the practice progressed, improvement was evident in the d-CAIS group but not in the s-CAIS group. When reaching the plateau stage of the learning curve of the d-CAIS group (after five attempts), the influence of different methods of guidance was limited between the two groups. Conclusions A learning curve effect was found in d-CAIS but not in s-CAIS in vitro tests by beginners. The operating procedure of dynamic navigated and static template-guided implant placement was easy to master.

Implant Therapy in the Rehabilitation of Treated Mandibular Arteriovenous Malformations

R. Lan, U. Ordioni, F. Prince, E. Loyer, J. H. Catherine, G. Maille

Summary: Mandibular arteriovenous malformations are rare congenital malformations that require multidisciplinary care. Implant rehabilitation after embolization and resection is poorly described. We present a case study of a patient with mandibular arteriovenous malformation treated with embolization and resection, followed by implant rehabilitation using bone graft and short implants. Monitoring of osteointegration and creating a case series may improve understanding of implant treatment for arteriovenous malformation patients.

A novel technique to quantify bone- to- implant contact of zygomatic implants: a radiographic analysis based on three- dimensional image registration and segmentation

Yuwei Gu, Dingzhong Zhang, Baoxin Tao, Feng Wang, Xiaojun Chen, Yiqun Wu

Summary: This study aims to establish a new technique for obtaining the BIC area (BICA) between zygomatic implants and zygomatic bone based on post-operative CBCT images. The technique involves 3D image registration and segmentation to eliminate metal-induced artifacts. The results show that the new technique is more reliable than conventional 2D linear measurements.

Marginal bone level change of immediately restored implants with simultaneous guided bone regeneration: A systematic review

Xinyan Lin, Xinbo Yu, Feng Wang, Yiqun Wu

Summary: This study assessed marginal bone level change (MBLc), clinical outcomes for soft tissue, and survival rates for immediately restored implants with simultaneous guided bone regeneration (GBR). The results showed that implants with peri-implant gap filling had less marginal bone loss and more predictable soft tissue parameters compared to implants with gap with dehiscence/fenestration grafting. However, more evidence is needed to determine whether immediate provisional prostheses should be used in cases of simultaneous bone defects augmentation.

Longitudinal reactions of maxillary sinus in patients treated with multiple zygomatic implants: A modified radiographic evaluation with clinical follow-up

Shufang Jin, Hailong Ma, Xiaowan Ling, Baoxin Tao, Feng Wang, Yiqun Wu

Summary: This study investigated the effects of zygomatic implant placement on the maxillary sinus using radiographic and clinical indicators. The results showed that the thickness of the sinus membrane significantly increased after bilateral zygomatic implant placement, which may lead to maxillary sinus mucositis and osteitis.

A deep learning-based automatic segmentation of zygomatic bones from cone-beam computed tomography images: A proof of concept

Baoxin Tao, Xinbo Yu, Wenying Wang, Haowei Wang, Xiaojun Chen, Feng Wang, Yiqun Wu

Summary: In this study, a deep learning-based automatic segmentation method was proposed for zygomatic bones from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. The results showed that the proposed method outperformed dentists in terms of accuracy and efficiency. This automatic segmentation model for zygomatic bone has high accuracy and efficiency and is clinically significant for preoperative digital planning, zygoma reconstruction, orbital surgery, zygomatic implant surgery, and orthodontics.

Association between Vitamin D Levels and Dental Caries: A Systematic Review and Dose-Response Meta-Analysis of Cross-Sectional Studies

Mohammed Khalid Mahmood, Herve Tassery, Delphine Tardivo, Romain Lan

Summary: This meta-analysis found a significant association between low serum vitamin D levels and increased risk of dental caries, with a dose-response relationship. A 10 nmol/L increase in serum vitamin D level was linked to a 3% decrease in dental caries. However, the clinical significance of these findings may be limited due to the uncertainty of the evidence.

The phenotype and genotype of PAX9 mutations causing tooth agenesis

Cailing Jiang, Kang Yu, Yihan Shen, Feng Wang, Qinggang Dai, Yiqun Wu

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the associations between PAX9 mutations and clinical features of non-syndromic tooth agenesis patients. Through whole exome sequencing, mutations in PAX9 gene were identified in non-syndromic tooth agenesis patients, and conservation analysis and three-dimensional structure prediction were conducted to analyze the mutated proteins. The study found that PAX9 mutations were associated with non-syndromic tooth agenesis and caused functional impairments of the PAX9 protein.
