Summary: This study evaluated the potential use of sewage treatment plant waste in the production of red ceramic. The waste, obtained from a plant in Campos dos Goytacazes -RJ, was added to clayey ceramic body. Various formulations with different percentages of waste were prepared and fired at 800 degrees C. The results showed that the waste improved the flexural strength and water absorption of the ceramic, and its addition increased the overall mechanical strength.

Summary: This paper proposes a stylized two-region model to study the joint effect of waste mobility and WtE plant's ownership on waste disposal choices, welfare, and environmental quality. The findings suggest that waste recycling level is excessive under the mobility/private ownership scenario and generally suboptimal under waste autarky. The study also highlights the importance of local authorities in waste incineration decision-making and provides new insights into the relationship between WtE incineration and recycling.

Summary: The textile sector, especially laundries, generates a large quantity of wastes that need appropriate treatment before disposal. This study assessed the technical, environmental, and economic feasibility of using dried textile sludge as raw material for traditional ceramics. Results showed that the sludge's organic matter increased ceramic porosity and decreased mechanical strength, but all properties still met Brazilian brick standards. Additionally, heat release during sludge volatilization could contribute to energy saving.

Summary: Agricultural application is a primary method for recycling sewage sludge, providing nutrients and organic matter to crops and soil. The research aimed to determine the quality of sewage sludge generated at the Kumasi Wastewater Treatment Plant. The study found that the sludge had lower trace metal concentrations and met accepted values for soil fertilizer, but had a high concentration of arsenic, which needs to be reduced before use in soil amendment.

Summary: Steel swarf, a hazardous waste with high content of heavy metals and cutting fluids, is typically landfilled due to challenges in recycling. However, this study presents a novel hydrometallurgical approach for recycling steel swarf and producing ferric chloride through selective separation of iron from heavy metals. Experimental results show that ferric chloride solutions of 99% purity can be obtained from steel swarf in a single leaching step.

Summary: Water pollution caused by industrial and agricultural activities is a major global threat. Heavy metals, a type of water pollutants, can be effectively removed using plant amyloid-carbon membranes. This study successfully developed functional amyloid fibrils from sunflower and peanut meals and incorporated them into hybrid carbon/amyloid membranes for heavy metal removal.

Summary: Incorporating solid wastes into cement-based materials is beneficial for waste disposal and conservation of resources. This study proposes the use of recycled steel slag powder and waste glass powder in a cement-based electrolyte for assembling structural supercapacitor cells. The addition of these materials significantly improves the conductivity and capacitance of the cells, and their presence enhances ion transport paths and ion concentration, leading to enhanced energy storage performance. With the appropriate amount of waste glass powder, the strength loss caused by steel slag powder can be compensated, making the proposed cement-based electrolyte competitive for green building energy storage devices.
