Epidemiological studies demonstrated that patients suffering from overactive bladder often present with different mental problems, amongst which depression is the most frequently observed. The main goal of our study was to check if the repeated administration of corticosterone (CORT) is able to evoke the depressive-like behaviour and detrusor overactivity (DO) symptoms in rats. Moreover, we investigated whether the acute administration of common antidepressants (imipramine, 30 mg/kg, and fluoxetine, 15 mg/kg), antimuscarinic (oxybutynin chloride, 0.5 mg/kg) or CRF1 (SN 003, 1 mg/kg) antagonists has an impact on the cystometric parameters, behaviour in the Porsolt test, and overall locomotor activity of animals exposed to CORT. The experiments were carried out on female Wistar rats. All applied surgical and histopathology procedures, cystometric investigations, locomotor activity and forced swim measurements have been fully described in the published literature. Fourteen-day administration of CORT may induce both depressive and DO symptoms in rats, which are reversed by the inhibition of CRF1 receptors. It seems that the CRF1 receptor could be an interesting target for overactive bladder pharmacotherapy, particularly in patients with co-existing depression.

Neurobehavioral properties of Cymbopogon essential oils and its components

Karol Rojek, Anna Serefko, Ewa Poleszak, Aleksandra Szopa, Andrzej Wrobel, Malgorzata Guz, Jianbo Xiao, Krystyna Skalicka-Wozniak

Summary: Aromatic grasses of Cymbopogon genus are widely used in traditional medicine, and their essential oils and active substances have been studied for potential therapeutic effects, especially in the treatment of neurological and mental disorders. Many scientists suggest that plants from the Cymbopogon genus are ideal candidates for further pharmaceutical research.

Summary: The Polish Society of Gynecologists and Obstetricians (PSGO) published guidelines for the management of recurrent pelvic organ prolapse, recommending sacrocolpopexy as the method of choice for surgical repair. However, the higher risk of complications associated with sacrocolpopexy compared to vaginal surgeries should be taken into consideration.

Summary: This translation provides an overview of the Guideline for the diagnostic assessment of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) in women, developed by the Urogynecology Section of the Polish Society of Gynecologists and Obstetricians. It includes the steps and indications for the diagnostic assessment, emphasizing the individualization of the process.

Urine Nerve Growth Factor May Not Be Useful as a Biomarker of Overactive Bladder in Patients with Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Katarzyna Jankiewicz, Michal Bogusiewicz, Lukasz Nowakowski, Tomasz Rechberger, Artur Rogowski, Pawel Miotla

Summary: This study evaluated urinary NGF levels in POP patients involving the anterior vaginal wall and found that it was significantly increased in pure OAB patients. However, NGF cannot serve as a biomarker for OAB in patients with POP, and it is not a predictive factor for the resolution of OAB symptoms after POP surgical treatment.

Yeast Protein as an Easily Accessible Food Source

Monika Elzbieta Jach, Anna Serefko, Maria Ziaja, Marek Kieliszek

Summary: In recent years, consumer demand for healthy food has increased, prompting scientists to search for innovative methods of food production. Yeast protein biomass is a promising source of easily digestible protein with nutritional benefits. The production of yeast protein can also contribute to waste purification.

Central Effects of the Designer Drug Mephedrone in Mice-Basic Studies

Anna Serefko, Gabriela Bielecka-Papierz, Sylwia Talarek, Aleksandra Szopa, Piotr Skalecki, Bernadeta Szewczyk, Maria Radziwon-Zaleska, Ewa Poleszak

Summary: The study found that mephedrone in mice demonstrates stimulating locomotor activity and psychological effects, with a development of tolerance upon repeated administration. Additionally, it shows potential for anxiolytic effects and improved spatial memory, but has no impact on recognition memory.

Femistina versus Canephron as a prevention of urinary tract infections after midurethral sling surgery - Non-inferiority study

Ewa Rechberger, Andrzej Wrobel, Beata Kulik-Rechberger, Pawel Miotla, Tomasz Rechberger

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the non-inferiority of Femistina compared with Canephron in reducing symptomatic urinary tract infections (UTI) in the first six months following midurethral sling surgery. The results showed that Femistina was not inferior to Canephron in preventing lower urinary tract infections after the surgery.

Potentilla chinensis aqueous extract attenuates cyclophosphamide-induced hemorrhagic cystitis in rat model

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Potentilla chinensis extract (PCE) on urinary bladder function in cyclophosphamide-induced hemorrhagic cystitis (HC). The results showed that PCE attenuated detrusor overactivity and reversed the biochemical changes in the urothelium, detrusor muscle, and urine caused by HC. PCE may be a potential supportive treatment for patients undergoing cyclophosphamide-based chemotherapy.

The role of the L-arginine-NO-cGMP-dependent pathway in the development of sensitization to mephedrone effects on the locomotor activity in mice

Gabriela Bielecka-Papierz, Anna Serefko, Aleksandra Szopa, Sylwia Talarek, Andrzej Wrobel, Bernadeta Szewczyk, Maria Radziwon-Zaleska, Malgorzata Koltun-Jasion, Ewa Poleszak

Summary: This study investigated the potential involvement of the L-arginine-NO-cGMP pathway in the development of sensitization to mephedrone-induced hyperlocomotion. The results showed that inhibition of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (NOS) effectively prevented this process, while non-selective inhibition of NOS may have a dual effect.

Summary: The aim of the studies was to evaluate the antiproliferative potential of new derivatives containing 4-nitrophenyl group against human tumor cell lines and its impact on developmental toxicity in zebrafish model. The results showed that APS-1 and APS-18 compounds reduced the viability of human tumor lines, with APS-18 showing strong and selective antiproliferative activity against all neoplastic cell lines, particularly glioblastoma. The fish embryo acute toxicity test demonstrated that APS-1 and APS-18 did not cause morphological abnormalities in zebrafish embryos, indicating their potential for further research and development of safer drugs with better anticancer properties.

Lukasz Zapala, Grzegorz Niemczyk, Piotr Zapala, Artur Wdowiak, Iwona Bojar, Tomasz Kluz, Aleksandra Szopa, Anna Serefko, Piotr Radziszewski, Andrzej Wrobel

Summary: This paper aimed to investigate whether the selective cannabinoid CB1 receptor agonist ACEA could reverse the effects of corticosterone (CORT) on depressive and overactive bladder potential. Through experiments on 48 female rats, it was found that ACEA could restore CORT-induced bladder dysfunction and depressive behavior, as well as regulate urine and other biomarkers.

Evaluation of Antidepressive-like Behaviours and Oxidative Stress Parameters in Mice Receiving Imipramine-Zinc Complex Compound

Aleksandra Szopa, Mariola Herbet, Ewa Poleszak, Anna Serefko, Agnieszka Czylkowska, Iwona Piatkowska-Chmiel, Kamila Kasperek, Andrzej Wrobel, Paulina Prewencka, Bernadeta Szewczyk

Summary: The study evaluated the antidepressant-like effects of an IMI-Zn complex compound on mice and compared its efficacy with separate administration of imipramine and zinc. The results showed that the IMI-Zn complex exhibited dose-dependent antidepressant potential similar to individual treatments of imipramine and zinc. The study also found that acute stress did not significantly affect oxidative stress parameters. Developing the IMI-Zn complex could simplify treatment and improve patient compliance.
