The main objective of this paper is to investigate the degree to which lean manufacturing (LM) practices are being implemented within Brazilian small and medium enterprises (SMEs), by defining what LM means, in the view of SMEs in Brazil. In addition, the paper investigates the relationship between LM implementation and performance of such companies. The research method used in this paper comprised of an exploratory survey using the partial least-square method with the structural equation modelling technique (PLS-SEM). The results show that the companies studied used practices in a fragmented manner, without a holistic view of LM, which is considered to be one of the most important parts of this approach. Only the constructs of statistical process control, total productive maintenance and employee involvement are being implemented as an integrated approach for Brazilian SMEs. These companies do not take other important constructs such as customer involvement, continuous flow, pull production, set-up time reduction, supplier development and supplier feedback into consideration as part of LM systems, despite using some practices in a dispersed manner. Concerning performance, the present study shows that even in a fragmented way, the implementation of these LM practices help these companies to achieve improvement in operational performance.

Factors for choosing production control systems in make-to-order shops: a systematic literature review

Fernando Jose Gomez Paredes, Moacir Godinho Filho, Matthias Thurer, Nuno O. Fernandes, Charbel Jose Chiappeta Jabbour

Summary: This paper presents an analysis of comparative studies on production control systems (PCSs) in the make-to-order (MTO) context. The results indicate that the design of control loops is the main factor that differentiates PCS performance, and other important factors include order release mechanism, workload aggregation approach, and workload estimation method used on control loops.

The driving and dependence power between Lean leadership competencies: an integrated ISM/fuzzy MICMAC approach

Debora Bianco, Moacir Godinho Filho, Lauro Osiro, Gilberto Miller Devos Ganga, Guilherme Luz Tortorella

Summary: This study aims to propose a list of Lean leadership competencies and provide a practical roadmap for Lean leadership development and training. Through a systematic literature review, interpretive structural modeling, and fuzzy MICMAC analysis, a hierarchy model was developed to prioritize the competencies. The results show that focusing on the shop floor and developing self-awareness are the main ways to improve Lean leaders.

Unlocking the Relationship Between Lean Leadership Competencies and Industry 4.0 Leadership Competencies: An ISM/Fuzzy MICMAC Approach

Debora Bianco, Moacir Godinho Filho, Lauro Osiro, Gilberto Ganga

Summary: This article explores the relationship between the competencies of Lean leaders and the competencies of current leaders in Industry 4.0. Through a systematic literature review, 18 Lean leadership competencies and 6 Leadership 4.0 competencies were identified. An interpretive structural modeling approach was used to analyze the relationship between the leadership competencies. The results show that Lean leaders' competencies can sustain the competencies needed in Industry 4.0 leaders, and there is strong synergy between the two approaches.

Lean production, information and communication technologies and operational performance

Giuliano Marodin, Charbel Jose Chiappetta Jabbour, Moacir Godinho Filho, Guilherme Luz Tortorella

Summary: The present research aims to understand the impact of the association between lean production and information and communication technologies (ICTs) on operational performance. The survey findings reveal contradictory results, suggesting that internal-oriented ICTs positively moderate the effect of lean on operational performance, while external-oriented ICTs negatively moderate the effect of lean on operational performance. These results emphasize the importance of understanding the systemic relationships between lean and ICTs.

Natalia Roberta Lopes, Moacir Godinho Filho, Gilberto Miller Devos Ganga, Guilherme Luz Tortorella, Mario Henrique Bueno Moreira Callefi, Bruna Tamara de Lima

Summary: In recent years, lean manufacturing (LM) has been utilized to improve operational performance by enhancing productivity, quality, and profitability. However, sustaining LM initiatives over time has proven to be challenging for organizations. This study proposes a comprehensive list of 19 critical factors for long-term sustainability of LM, which were identified through systematic literature review, expert interviews, and case studies. This research contributes by consolidating the existing knowledge on lean sustainability factors and provides practical guidance for managers to sustain lean practices in the long run.
