Converting biomass into energy can reduce dependency on fossil fuels and decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Palm kernel shell, a high-energy oil palm biomass, has potential as a renewable energy source. Studying the supply chain of palm kernel shell and establishing a sustainable supply chain model are crucial in realizing the potential of this renewable energy source.
Depleting stockpile of fossil fuels and rising global temperature due to the greenhouse effect are probably the two most threatening factors to civilization sustainability. Converting biomass into a readily available energy source will help reduce dependency on fossil fuels, whilst at the same time moderating greenhouse gas emmissions due to its carbon neutrality. Palm oil industry is the largest source of biomass in Indonesia and the available quantity to be utilized is growing inline with the steady growth of the generating industry. Among various wastes from palm oil processing, palm kernel shell is an oil palm biomass with high potential to be applied as a source of energy, given its high caloric value and distinctive physical properties. This source of renewable energy can be utilized by industries with thermal conversion processes. As a prerequisite, a feasibility study on technical, environmental, and economic aspects needs to be carried out. From long term perspective, supply, demand, and regulatory situational analysis will also be required. Lastly, a review on the existing palm kernel shell supply chain will help to understand its current situation. Based on literature studies and field observations, we have identified supply and demand characteristics that will be valuable in constructing an effective, efficient, and sustainable supply chain model of palm kernel shell. Understanding these characteristics is a precursor in realizing this massive potential of renewable energy source in the industrial context.

Predicting Sugar Balance as the Impact of Land-Use/Land-Cover Change Dynamics in a Sugarcane Producing Regency in East Java, Indonesia

Salis Deris Artikanur, Widiatmaka Widiatmaka, Yudi Setiawan, Marimin Marimin

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of land-use/land-cover change on sugar production in Lamongan Regency, Indonesia. The findings suggest that significant changes in land-use/land-cover are expected in 2031, resulting in a decrease in sugar production and balance. These results can be used to prevent uncontrolled land-use/land-cover changes and meet the sugar needs at the regional and national level.

An Evaluation of Possible Sugarcane Plantations Expansion Areas in Lamongan, East Java, Indonesia

Salis Deris Artikanur, Widiatmaka, Yudi Setiawan, Marimin

Summary: Sugar is a significant commodity for Indonesia, with a need of 7 million tons, while imports were approximately 5.54 million tons in 2020. The study evaluates the potential areas for sugarcane plantation expansion in Lamongan using land suitability analysis and overlay analysis of policy maps. The highest weighted parameters for suitability were soil drainage, cation exchange capacity and base saturation, and rainfall. The total possible area for expansion in Lamongan was 32,552.37 ha, with the largest class being Possible Area 2 at 65.67%. The sub-districts with the highest possible areas were Solokuro, Ngimbang, and Mantup. The recommendation is to extend the area allocated to sugarcane plantations in Lamongan, considering other land uses.

Design of Graphic Concept Model for Specialty Coffee Packaging Labels

Zulkarnain, Machfud, Marimin, Emmy Darmawati, Sugiarto

Summary: This study aimed to determine the attributes of packaging labels, identify the most influential graphic elements, and establish the tone and manner for specialty coffee packaging labels. Experts expect coffee packaging labels to provide clear product information and convey a premium impression, as well as facilitate easy reading of necessary information. The top priorities for graphic elements on packaging labels are the identity of the coffee product, text hierarchy, label color, and typical label style. The must-have tone and manner for specialty coffee packaging labels are familiarity (friendliness), premium quality, simplicity, and uniqueness.

Rindra Yusianto, Suprihatin Suprihatin, Hartrisari Hardjomidjojo, Marimin Marimin

Summary: In the field of agri-food logistics, group decision-makers face high risk and uncertainty. This study proposes a trust uncertainty model based on the principles of uncertainty theory. A new method is developed to measure the trust of experts as decision-makers and the reliability of group decision results. The results show that this new method obtains the most optimal route with a high aggregation value. The trust uncertainty modeling successfully measures the trust level of group decision-makers and demonstrates reliability. Comparisons with commonly used approaches show advantages of this new model over AHP.
