Summary: A nationwide cohort study discovered that newly diagnosed glaucoma patients have a higher risk of developing dementia, especially among older individuals. This study used authorized data provided by the Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) to conduct a population-based retrospective cohort analysis. Analysis of the collected data revealed that glaucoma patients are at a greater risk of developing dementia, particularly among older individuals.

Summary: This study used large population-based cohort data from South Korea to investigate the association between scrub typhus and dementia. The results showed that a history of scrub typhus infection in old age is significantly associated with an increased risk of dementia, especially Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, prevention and appropriate treatment of scrub typhus should be emphasized as a measure for dementia prevention.

Summary: The study found that bacterial pneumonia is associated with an increased risk of dementia. Different pathogens are associated with different risks of Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and unspecified dementia. In addition, repeated hospitalization due to bacterial pneumonia is dose-dependently associated with the risks of dementia and vascular dementia.

Summary: This study investigated the association between blood pressure, physical frailty and dementia incidence in young elderly people. The results showed that high blood pressure was associated with increased risks of dementia, especially vascular dementia, while low blood pressure was not associated with increased risks of any type of dementia. This suggests the need for tight blood pressure control in young elderly people to prevent dementia, regardless of frailty status, and supports current clinical guidelines for hypertension treatment.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between GGT variability and osteoporotic fractures. The results showed that increased GGT variability is associated with an increased risk of osteoporotic fractures in the Korean population. Maintaining constant and stable GGT level may help reduce the risk of osteoporotic fractures.

Summary: This study examines whether physical activity can moderate the association between biomarkers of brain pathologies and dementia risk. The results show that individuals who engage in high-intensity physical activity have weaker associations with brain pathologies and a lower risk of developing dementia.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between premature ventricular complexes (PVCs) and right ventricular (RV) dysfunction, and the impact of radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) on RV function. The results showed that frequent PVCs are associated with RV dysfunction and successful RFCA can reverse RV dysfunction.

Summary: Early rhythm-control therapy has better cardiovascular outcomes than rate-control therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation. Frailty is an important factor in determining the potential improvement of older patients after rhythm-control therapy. This study investigated the impact of frailty on the outcome of early rhythm-control therapy in older patients with atrial fibrillation.

Summary: Obesity is associated with atrial fibrillation (AF) burden and severity, and studies suggest that AF is more common in white populations compared to Asians. This study analyzed data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service's Health Screening and the U.K. Biobank, and found that obesity is a risk factor for AF in both European and Asian populations.

Summary: Birt-Hogg-Dube (BHD) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by lung cysts, skin manifestations, and renal tumors. This study conducted next-generation sequencing on 31 South Korean subjects with lung cysts and diagnosed 11 of them with BHD. Three novel mutations were identified. The prevalence of pneumothorax was higher in South Korean BHD patients compared to the rest of the world, while the prevalence of skin manifestations and renal tumors was lower.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed clinical data of 174 patients with heart failure and found that device-detected atrial fibrillation (AF) was associated with decreased biventricular pacing and worse clinical outcomes. This suggests that early detection and intervention of AF are important for patients undergoing cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) treatment.
