Summary: The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties and factorial structure of the Addiction-like Eating Behaviors Scale (AEBS) in an Italian sample, and to assess its measurement invariance across clinical and nonclinical populations. The results indicated that the AEBS-IT is a valid and reliable measure of addictive-like eating behaviors.

Summary: This study aimed to validate and investigate the psychometric properties of the Italian version of the Measure of Eating Compulsivity-10 (MEC10-IT) in a sample of inpatients with severe obesity (Study 1), and to test the measurement invariance of the measure across non-clinical and clinical samples (Study 2). The MEC10-IT was found to have a confirmed factorial structure among Italian adult inpatients with severe obesity and demonstrated to be invariant between clinical and community samples, showing good psychometric properties and screening abilities for classifying individuals with problematic eating behaviors.

Summary: Eating disorders, such as food addiction and binge eating, are significant causes of morbidity and mortality and are common underlying causes of weight loss failure. The mechanisms underlying the perception of food properties and possible sensory deficits in eating disorders have been scarcely investigated, despite their central role in food choice and potential relevance in maintaining disordered eating behaviors in obese patients.

Summary: Although the consumption of carbohydrates is necessary for survival, it can lead to obesity due to their reinforcing properties. Sugar overconsumption is regulated by brain reward systems, but the specific cell types controlling the initiation and termination of sugary meals are still unknown.

Summary: This review article discusses the relevance of the reward system in behavioral addictions such as gambling disorder, internet gaming disorder, and food addiction/binge eating disorder. Specifically, it explores the role of the ventral striatum as a possible biomarker for these conditions and discusses studies analyzing brain changes following interventions for these disorders.

Summary: Mindful eating, as a lifestyle modification, has been found to be an effective intervention for treating food addiction, especially in regulating emotional eating. This cross-sectional study on university students showed that individuals with lower mindfulness levels were more likely to be food addicted. Increasing mindful eating may be suggested as an essential strategy to control food addiction among young individuals.

Summary: The study found that food addiction is significantly associated with more serious eating pathologies, more frequent weight-cycling, higher impulsivity, and higher BMI. The severity of food addiction was predictive of an increase in BMI. Impulsivity showed a correlation with the severity of food addiction, suggesting a relationship between impulsivity and weight gain in some individuals.

Summary: The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders defines binge-eating disorder (BED) as episodes of overeating without hunger, eating too fast until uncomfortable fullness, or eating alone with feelings of shame and disgust after eating. Food addiction (FA), on the other hand, is characterized by excessive food consumption, cravings, inability to cut down on food intake, and withdrawal and tolerance to overeating. This review aims to comprehensively characterize and compare BED and FA, utilizing 51 relevant publications obtained from PubMed using specific search criteria.

Summary: This study examines the changes in price promotions after the implementation of the 2017 Oakland SSB tax. The findings suggest that while the prevalence of price promotions for SSBs did not significantly change in Oakland, the depth of price promotions increased. This increase in the amount of price promotions may reflect a strategy by manufacturers to weaken the tax and/or retailers to bolster demand.

Summary: This study found that perceived role in the community among Black individuals with predominantly low income in the U.S. is associated with eating patterns and body weight, especially emotional eating and food addiction. However, the results should be interpreted with caution due to the small sample size.

Summary: The present study explores the relationship between binge eating and other addictive-like behaviors. The results show that binge eating is associated with various behaviors in females, while in males it is associated with purging, compulsive exercise, and overweight/obesity. The study also finds that self-starvation predicts binge eating in males, and food addiction and alcohol dependence predict binge eating in females.

Summary: This review examines the association between addictive eating and nutrients, foods, and dietary patterns. The findings suggest that foods high in fat and refined carbohydrates are commonly associated with addictive eating. Individuals with addictive eating tend to have higher intakes of energy, carbohydrates, and fats compared to those without addictive eating. However, due to the heterogeneity among studies, it is challenging to determine if specific foods or dietary patterns facilitate the addictive process. Further research is needed to explore potential associations. In the meantime, personalized dietary advice targeting foods high in fat and refined carbohydrates could be incorporated into current treatment approaches for addictive eating.

Summary: Food addiction is associated with more negative reactions to weighing and less acceptance of shape/weight during weight loss treatment, leading to greater disordered eating outcomes. Sensitivity to weight gain and reactions to weighing are important factors affecting treatment outcomes in individuals with BED and obesity. Targeting these features may improve weight loss outcomes in individuals with BED, obesity, and food addiction.

Summary: Epilepsy affects approximately 50 million people worldwide, and a single seizure does not necessarily indicate epilepsy. There are many other central nervous system disorders that can cause seizures, leading to a widespread and often underestimated impact. Correct diagnosis and treatment could potentially make 70% of epilepsy patients seizure-free, but their quality of life is also influenced by factors such as adverse reactions to antiepileptic drugs, access to education, mood, employment, and transportation.

Summary: The estimated rate of treatment-resistant major depressive disorder (TRD) remains higher than 30%, even after the discovery of multiple classes of antidepressants in the last 7 decades. Toludesvenlafaxine (ansofaxine, LY03005, or LPM570065) is a first-in-class triple monoaminergic reuptake inhibitor (TRI) that has reached clinical use. This review summarizes the clinical and preclinical evidence for the efficacy, tolerability, and safety of toludesvenlafaxine, highlighting its positive results in short-term trials but indicating the need for more research on larger samples and longer durations.

Summary: Elite athletes face significant physical and psychological stress throughout their careers, but the research on the impact of this stress on their mental health is still in early stages. Eating disorders, substance use disorders, and behavioral addictions are areas that require further investigation to develop prevention and treatment strategies. In particular, the exploration of eating disorders in athletes is important due to the vulnerability of this population to weight and body shape issues and the higher prevalence of eating disorders compared to the general population. This article synthesizes available data on a specific disorder, anorexia athletica, including risk factors, diagnosis, and treatment, highlighting the need for more research on the physical and mental health of elite athletes, especially in esthetic sports.
