Summary: The study investigated the effect of ultrasonic treatment on the structure, size, and aggregated morphology of Lignosus rhinocerotis polysaccharide (LRP), revealing that ultrasonic treatment can improve the aqueous solubility of LRP, decrease molecular size parameters, and transform hyperbranched LRP molecules into flexible chains, which reaggregate into spherical aggregates under long-time ultrasonication. Additionally, the study found the existence of a triple helix structure in LRP, which was retained after ultrasonic treatment.

Summary: (1 -> 3)-beta-glucan (BDG) testing has been used as an adjunct in the diagnosis of invasive fungal disease (IFD) for nearly three decades, showing high negative predictive value but potential false positives due to contamination and mucosal barrier injury. Understanding non-IFD causes of elevated circulating BDG, such as iatrogenic contamination and Nocardia sp. infection, can improve the planning and interpretation of BDG assays.

Summary: The polysaccharides GAL-Am and GLC-Am extracted from Amanita muscaria fruiting bodies showed selective proliferation reduction against melanoma cell line B16-F10 without affecting normal fibroblast cells. These polysaccharides also decreased the clonogenic capacity of melanoma cells over time, making them promising compounds for further exploration of their anti-melanoma properties.

Summary: Haptophytes synthesize unique beta-glucans with more beta-1,6-linkages than beta-1,3-linkages as storage polysaccharides. The study found that PhTGS, a homolog of yeast 1,6-beta-transglycosylase, is involved in beta-glucan synthesis in the haptophyte Pleurochrysis haptonemofera. Knockdown of PhTGS repressed beta-glucan accumulation and induced lipid production, suggesting its role in carbon metabolic flow. Furthermore, PhTGS was expressed more in light, indicating its specific function in beta-glucan synthesis during photosynthesis.

Summary: Hepatogenic diabetes (HD) is a result of chronic liver damage, characterized by hyperglycemia and impaired glucose tolerance due to destruction of pancreatic islet cells. Liver disease and diabetes mellitus are closely linked, with liver disease leading to elevated blood glucose and diabetes affecting liver disease recovery and treatment. The relationship between cirrhosis and diabetes is significant, but early diagnosis of HD may be missed in clinical practice. Therefore, monitoring blood glucose in liver disease patients is crucial. This study discusses mainstream blood glucose monitoring techniques to facilitate further research, particularly in HD.

Summary: Crosslinking affects the mechanical behavior and tissue metabolism of collagen-based tissues. Aging and diabetes alter the crosslinking type and density, thus changing tissue properties. High-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking and advanced-glycation end-products result in uniform deformation under daily activity, while low-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking does not. High-connectivity model displays more sliding, while AGEs induce instability in structures near the binding sites.

Summary: The potential of multi-layer nanoemulsions for improving the cellular uptake, antioxidant activity, and in vitro bioaccessibility of alpha-tocopherol was examined. The results showed that the multi-layer nanoemulsions significantly enhanced the cellular uptake and antioxidant activity of alpha-tocopherol compared to free coumarin 6. Furthermore, the use of chitosan and dextran sulfate as wall materials in the multi-layer nanoemulsions led to even higher cellular uptake, in vitro bioaccessibility, and antioxidant activity of alpha-tocopherol.
