Aortic stiffness and systemic inflammation changes predict clinical response to intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy in patients with age-related macular degeneration

Nikolaos Ioakeimidis, Ioanna Gourgouli, Dimitrios Terentes-Printzios, Danai-Magdalini Gourgouli, Christos Georgakopoulos, Konstantinos Aznaouridis, Sofia Spai, Dimitris Tousoulis, Konstantinos Tsioufis, Charalambos Vlachopoulos

Summary: Aortic stiffness and systemic inflammation are associated with response to anti-VEGF therapy, and intravitreal ranibizumab injections can lead to a decrease in aortic stiffness and serum high sensitivity interleukin-6 levels. Both parameters can predict clinical improvement.

Myocardial strain analysis by cardiac magnetic resonance 3D feature-tracking identifies subclinical abnormalities in patients with neuromuscular disease and no overt cardiac involvement

Alessia Azzu, Alexios S. Antonopoulos, Sylvia Krupickova, Zain Mohiaddin, Batool Almogheer, Charalambos Vlachopoulos, Antonis Pantazis, Dudley J. Pennell, Raad H. Mohiaddin

Summary: By using feature-tracking cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR), subclinical cardiac involvement in patients with neuromuscular diseases (NMDs) can be detected, even before the development of overt cardiac damage. This imaging technique may serve as a useful early detection imaging biomarker for cardiac involvement.

Lipoprotein(a) and inflammation-pathophysiological links and clinical implications for cardiovascular disease

Spyridon Simantiris, Alexios S. Antonopoulos, Charalampos Papastamos, Georgios Benetos, Nikolaos Koumallos, Konstantinos Tsioufis, Dimitris Tousoulis

Summary: The role of lipoprotein(a) (Lp[a]) as a significant and possibly causal cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor has been well established. Many studies have supported inflammation as a mediator of Lp(a)-induced increase in CVD risk. The relationship between Lp(a) and inflammation is bidirectional as Lp(a) levels are regulated by inflammatory stimuli or anti-inflammatory treatment, and reduction of Lp(a) concentration contributes to partial reversion of the Lp(a) related inflammatory profile.

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging before and after therapeutic interventions for systemic sclerosis-associated myocarditis

Stylianos Panopoulos, Sophie Mavrogeni, Charalambos Vlachopoulos, Petros P. Sfikakis

Summary: Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) plays an important role in evaluating cardiac involvement in systemic sclerosis (SSc). This study assessed changes in myocardial lesions detected by CMRI following therapeutic interventions for symptomatic myocarditis in SSc patients.

Pericoronary fat attenuation index-a new imaging biomarker and its diagnostic and prognostic utility: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Marios Sagris, Alexios S. Antonopoulos, Spiridon Simantiris, Evangelos Oikonomou, Gerasimos Siasos, Konstantinos Tsioufis, Dimitris Tousoulis

Summary: Pericoronary fat attenuation index (FAI) is a novel marker of coronary vascular inflammation with prognostic value for major cardiovascular events. This systematic review and meta-analysis found that FAI was significantly higher in unstable coronary plaques compared to stable plaques, and higher FAI values offered incremental prognostic value for future cardiovascular events.

Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor Ameliorates Endothelial Activation and Thrombotic Diathesis Biomarkers in a Murine Model of Hind Limb Ischemia

Summary: This study suggests that GCSF administration in an atherosclerotic mouse model of hind limb ischemia can lead to decreases in biomarkers associated with endothelial activation and thrombosis.

Adhesion Molecules as Prognostic Biomarkers in Coronary Artery Disease

Marios Sagris, Panagiotis Theofilis, Alexios S. Antonopoulos, Evangelos Oikonomou, Spiros Simantiris, Spyridon Papaioannou, Constantinos Tsioufis, Dimitris Tousoulis

Summary: Atherosclerosis is a progressive disease characterized by the formation of atherosclerotic plaques in arteries, driven by the effect of triggering factors on the endothelium. Coronary artery disease is a common manifestation of atherosclerosis, burdening the global healthcare system. Adhesion molecules have been recognized to play a role in CAD progression and are being explored as potential targets for individualized treatment.

Association of Pressure Wave Reflections With Left Ventricular Mass: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Lazaros K. Yofoglu, Fotios Karachalias, Marios K. Georgakis, Christos Tountas, Antonios A. Argyris, Yi Zhang, Theodoros G. Papaioannou, Jacques Blacher, Thomas Weber, Charalampos Vlachopoulos, Michel Safar, Athanase D. Protogerou

Summary: This study aimed to examine the relationship between pressure wave reflections (PWRs) and left ventricular mass. Through a meta-analysis of 19 studies, it was found that there is a significant association between PWRs and left ventricular mass, except for the aortic augmentation index as estimated by generalized transfer functions. The association between carotid augmentation index and left ventricular mass was higher among populations with higher heart rate.

Oxidative Stress Biomarkers in Coronary Artery Disease

Spyridon Simantiris, Charalampos Papastamos, Alexios S. Antonopoulos, Panagiotis Theofilis, Marios Sagris, Martha Bounta, Georgia Konisti, Nikolaos Galiatsatos, Anna Xanthaki, Konstantinos Tsioufis, Dimitris Tousoulis

Summary: Oxidative stress is critical in atherosclerosis and biomarkers can help in early diagnosis and better prognosis of coronary artery disease. Current biomarkers include oxidized low-density lipoprotein, myeloperoxidase, and lipid peroxidation biomarkers. These biomarkers are associated with the presence and extent of atherosclerosis and elevated in patients with acute coronary syndromes, possibly predicting clinical outcomes.

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging of pericardial diseases: a comprehensive guide

Alexios S. Antonopoulos, Apostolos Vrettos, Emmanouil Androulakis, Christina Kamperou, Charalambos Vlachopoulos, Konstantinos Tsioufis, Raad Mohiaddin, George Lazaros

Summary: Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging is an important diagnostic tool for assessing pericardial diseases, providing detailed information on cardiac anatomy and function, as well as detecting pericardial inflammation and effusion. CMR has high diagnostic accuracy for non-invasive detection of constrictive physiology and can guide treatment decisions for recurrent pericarditis. This article serves as a primer for reporting physicians, summarizing CMR protocols, interpreting major findings, and discussing the strengths and weaknesses of CMR in pericardial diseases.

Fabry disease due to D313Y variant with renal failure and possible cardiac involvement: a case report

Evangelia Bei, Alexios S. Antonopoulos, Georgios Tsivgoulis, Charalambos Vlachopoulos

Summary: This case report describes a patient with Anderson-Fabry disease (AFD) and severe chronic kidney disease who was referred for evaluation of possible cardiac involvement. The patient showed left ventricular concentric hypertrophy and reduced left ventricular ejection fraction. Cardiac magnetic resonance revealed findings consistent with ischemic heart disease and myocardial disease.
