This meta-analysis aims to explore the efficacy of liraglutide in patients with NASH. The results showed that liraglutide effectively improves lipid profile in NASH patients, but has no significant impact on liver function indicators.
Introduction: Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease, but no drug thera-pies have been approved to date. While glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogues may help in the management, the existing evidence remains conflicting. Aim: This meta-analysis aims to elucidate the efficacy of liraglutide in patients with NASH. Material and methods: We searched 4 databases for randomized controlled trials assessing the efficacy of liraglutide in patients with NASH. We analysed continuous outcomes using the mean difference (MD) and relative 95% confidence interval (CI), while dichotomous outcomes were analysed using the risk ratio (RR) and relative 95% CI. Primary endpoints included alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (IU/l), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) (IU/l), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (IU/l), and gamma-glutamyl trans-ferase (GGT) (IU/l). Secondary outcomes were body mass index (BMI) (kg/m2), waist circumference (cm), total cholesterol (TC) (mmol/l), triglyceride (TG) (mmoll), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (mmol/l), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (mmol/l), and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) (%). Results: A total of 5 clinical trials were included. The analysis showed that liraglutide is effective in increasing HDL (MD = +0.10 (-0.18, -0.02), p = 0.02) and reducing LDL levels in blood (MD = -0.29 (-0.56, -0.02), p = 0.04). No significant difference was noted in levels of ALT (MD = 2.66 (-1.56, 6.87), p = 0.22), AST (MD = -1.99 (-5.70, 1.72), p = 0.29), GGT (MD = 5.02 (-0.86, 10.90), p = 0.09), ALP (MD = -5.16 (-11.90, 1.59), p = 0.13), TC (MD = -0.31 (-0.65, 0.03), p = 0.07), or TG (MD = -0.14 (-0.53, 0.25), p = 0.48). The HbA1c (%) level was found to be significantly reduced in the liraglutide arm (MD = -0.62 (-0.88, -0.36), p < 0.01). Conclusions: Liraglutide effectively improves the lipid profile in patients with NASH.

Bacterial prediction using internet of things (IoT) and machine learning

Hamza Khurshid, Rafia Mumtaz, Noor Alvi, Ayesha Haque, Sadaf Mumtaz, Faisal Shafait, Sheraz Ahmed, Muhammad Imran Malik, Andreas Dengel

Summary: Water is a vital resource for sustaining life on Earth, and its quality has become increasingly important due to rising water pollution and depletion of freshwater sources. Developing countries with low control over water pollution are likely to have poor public health. The current methods used in most developing countries are ineffective and rely heavily on human intervention rather than technological and automated solutions. There is an urgent need to develop a proper and systematic system for regularly monitoring and managing water quality. Internet of Things (IoT) offers a great alternative to traditional approaches, allowing remote real-time measurements with minimal human involvement. The proposed system consists of water quality measuring nodes with various sensors, transmitting data to a server for analysis and processing. Machine learning algorithms are employed for water quality classification and bacterial prediction. A web portal is developed for data visualization, displaying heat maps and other infographics. The system provides an alternative and convenient solution for bacterial prediction, offering advantages such as remote monitoring, ease of scalability, real-time water quality status, and portable hardware.

Summary: Metal nanoparticles capped with polymers, such as the polypropylene glycol (PPG) capped silver nanoparticles (PPG-AgNPs) synthesized in this study, have been used for analytical and biomedical applications. The PPG-AgNPs were characterized using various techniques and were found to be highly stable. They were employed as a chemosensor for the insecticide Carbaryl, enabling the quantitative, rapid, selective, and efficient detection of Carbaryl in various samples. The PPG-AgNPs based sensor showed great potential for on-spot detection of Carbaryl in ecological, biological, and food samples.

Aqsa Aijaz, Daim Asif Raja, Farooq-Ahmad Khan, Jiri Barek, Muhammad Imran Malik

Summary: A colorimetric assay based on branched polyethyleneimine-conjugated silver nanoparticles (PEI-AgNPs) has been developed for the on-spot detection of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in the environment. The method exhibits high sensitivity, selectivity, and efficiency for the quantification of CIP in a linear dynamic range of 0.1-200 μM, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.038 μM and limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.12 μM. The proposed method is capable of detecting CIP in complex samples and outperforms UV-Vis spectroscopy and UPLC in terms of performance.

Poly(3-hexylthiophene) incorporated with metallic nanoparticles: optoelectronic properties in context of organic solar cell

Saqiba Riaz, Muhammad Azhar Ansari, Daim Asif Raja, Hajira Tahir, Muhammad Imran Malik

Summary: Solar cells convert solar energy into electrical energy. Inorganic solar cell production is expensive and poses environmental issues, so there is a need for alternative options. Organic material-based solar cells are a viable alternative due to their low cost and ease of production. However, their low stability and limited lifetime have been obstacles to commercial use. The optoelectronic properties of donor and acceptor materials can be improved, and incorporating different metallic nanoparticles in the donor material opens up possibilities for tuning the materials to match the acceptor material's energy levels.
