This study aims to determine the precise nitrogen fertilizer requirement for maize by using remote sensing technology to detect nitrogen deficiency and predict grain yield. The results show that specific vegetation indices can effectively detect nitrogen deficiency and predict maize yield.
Determining a precise nitrogen fertilizer requirement for maize in a particular field and year has proven to be a challenge due to the complexity of the nitrogen inputs, transformations and outputs in the nitrogen cycle. Remote sensing of maize nitrogen deficiency may be one way to move nitrogen fertilizer applications closer to the specific nitrogen requirement. Six vegetation indices [normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), green normalized difference vegetation index (GNDVI), red-edge normalized difference vegetation index (RENDVI), triangle greenness index (TGI), normalized area vegetation index (NAVI) and chlorophyll index-green (CIgreen)] were evaluated for their ability to detect nitrogen deficiency and predict grain maize grain yield. Strip trials were established at two locations in Arkansas, USA, with nitrogen rate as the primary treatment. Remote sensing data was collected weekly with an unmanned aerial system (UAS) equipped with a multispectral and thermal sensor. Relationships among index value, nitrogen fertilizer rate and maize growth stage were evaluated. Green NDVI, RENDVI and CIgreen had the strongest relationship with nitrogen fertilizer treatment. Chlorophyll Index-green and GNDVI were the best predictors of maize grain yield early in the growing season when the application of additional nitrogen was still agronomically feasible. However, the logistics of late season nitrogen application must be considered.

The effect of changing apical foramen diameter on regenerative potential of mature teeth with necrotic pulp and apical periodontitis

Hisham M. Abada, Ahmed Abdel Rahman Hashem, Ashraf Mohamed Abu-Seida, Mohamed Mokhtar Nagy

Summary: This study evaluated the regenerative potential of permanent necrotic mature teeth with different apical foramen diameters compared to conventional endodontic treatment. Results showed that increasing the apical size diameter was associated with less inflammatory cell count, less bone resorption, more tissue ingrowth, and more percentage of new hard tissue formation inside the root canal. The minimum apical diameter that should be enlarged for regenerative endodontic therapy is 0.4 mm.

Early cascade rice irrigation shutoff (ECIS) conserves water: implications for cascade flood automation

Joseph H. Massey, M. Cade Smith, Thais M. Jardim, Luis A. Avila, Ahmed A. Hashem, Michele L. Reba

Summary: This research aims to make the Cascade rice flood distribution (CASC) method more water efficient by devising practices that reduce irrigation water use. By using flood depth to trigger irrigation shutoff, the early cascade rice irrigation shutoff (ECIS) can significantly save irrigation water, reduce field run-off, and manage flood depth. The results suggest the potential application of ECIS coupled with irrigation automation technologies to reduce aquifer withdrawals in the lower Mississippi River basin (LMRB) rice producing areas.

The Effect of Trypsin-Chymotrypsin on Postoperative Pain after Single Visit Endodontic Treatment: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Ahmed Abdel Rahman Hashem, Alaa Adly Abd Sattar, Tariq Yehia Abdel Rahman

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of trypsin-chymotrypsin in managing postoperative pain after root canal treatment and investigated synergistic effects with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as well as reported side effects. The results showed that trypsin-chymotrypsin demonstrated comparable effectiveness to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in reducing postoperative pain, and no synergistic effects were observed when the two were used in combination. This is the first randomized controlled trial to assess the effects of proteolytic enzymes on postendodontic pain.

Multiyear methane and nitrous oxide emissions in different irrigation management under long-term continuous rice rotation in Arkansas

S. Karki, M. A. A. Adviento-Borbe, B. R. K. Runkle, B. Moreno-Garcia, M. Anders, M. L. Reba

Summary: This study demonstrates that the alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation management can significantly reduce methane emissions from rice paddies. The results show that AWD reduces methane emissions by 73% compared to continuously flooded management. Furthermore, AWD has no significant impact on grain yield and nitrous oxide emissions.

Effect of Gypsum, Compost, and Foliar Application of Some Nanoparticles in Improving Some Chemical and Physical Properties of Soil and the Yield and Water Productivity of Faba Beans in Salt-Affected Soils

Megahed M. Amer, Hesham M. Aboelsoud, Eman M. Sakher, Ahmed A. Hashem

Summary: This study aimed to improve the soil properties, yield, and water productivity of faba beans in salt-affected soils through the application of gypsum, compost, and nanoparticles. The results showed that the combined application of gypsum and compost, as well as the foliar application of manganese and selenium nanoparticles, significantly improved soil salinity, sodium content, soil porosity, and infiltration. It also increased the yield and water productivity of faba beans.

Mineralization of S-metolachlor in soil as affected by moisture content, application history, and association with glyphosate

Luis A. de Avila, Carla R. Zemolin, Joseph H. Massey, Edinalvo R. Camargo, Mauricio C. Files, Guilherme Cassol

Summary: Several factors, including herbicide application history, soil moisture, and co-application with other herbicides, affect the mineralization of herbicides in soil. This study evaluated the mineralization of S-metolachlor in soil and found that higher soil moisture content led to higher mineralization. The mixture of S-metolachlor with glyphosate increased its degradation rate, and cornfield soil with a history of S-metolachlor application showed higher mineralization. However, the influence of sorption should be considered in drawing definitive conclusions.
