This study compared the morphological and physiological attributes of a Chilean strain of Heterosigma akashiwo with strains from France, Spain, and New Zealand. The Chilean strain exhibited the highest growth and carotenoid content, while the strains from Chile and Spain were less light-tolerant and had similar toxicity. These results indicate high intraspecific variability within H. akashiwo, including a strain from South America for the first time.
Heterosigma akashiwo is a bloom-forming planktonic flagellate that causes fish mortalities, which damages the aquaculture industry worldwide. In Chile, this species was reported for the first time in 1988 when it caused one of the most dramatic harmful algal blooms in the south of the country. At that time, an unialgal culture was set and used for a morphological characterization but, unfortunately, it was not maintained. In April 2013 a new outbreak of H. akashiwo was detected in the Maullin Estuary (41 degrees 37 ' S, 73 degrees 36 ' W), Southern Chile, causing fish mortalities in commercial salmon farms. An unialgal culture of this new Chilean population of H. akashiwo was obtained and has been maintained in the Culture Collection of Microalgae of the University of Concepcion, Chile, under the code CCM-UdeC 225. The aim of this study was to compare the morphological and physiological attributes of this Chilean strain of H. akashiwo with those of strains from France, Spain and New Zealand, in order to identify eventual intraspecific variability among them. Cell size, growth parameters, pigments profiles, photosynthetic attributes and toxicity were determined for the strains, grown under identical culture conditions. The Chilean strain exhibited the highest growth and accumulated the highest proportion of the carotenoid fucoxanthin, while strains from Chile and Spain were the less light-tolerant and had similar toxicity. These results reinforce previous findings about the high level of intraspecific variability within H. akashiwo including, for the first time, a strain from South America.

Photobiological Effects on Biochemical Composition in Porphyridium cruentum (Rhodophyta) with a Biotechnological Application

Summary: This study found that different light qualities significantly affect the photosynthetic efficiency, growth, and biochemical composition of Porphyridium cruentum. When supplemented with blue light under SOX light, the microalgae showed higher photosynthetic efficiency and significant differences in total protein levels and phycoerythrin content.

Summary: This study demonstrates the feasibility of using urea as a low-cost nitrogen source for the culture of the red microalga P. purpureum, as well as the viability of growing this species outdoors in Central-Southern Chile. Lipid content in the culture was significantly affected by the nitrogen source, while protein content was influenced by nitrogen concentration.

Summary: This study evaluated the extraction and separation of R-phycoerythrin from S. skottsbergii using two green technologies, ultrasound-assisted extraction and high-pressure homogenization. The results showed that high-pressure homogenization was the most efficient extraction method, with extraction yields consistent with predictive values, and R-phycoerythrin exhibited antioxidant capacity.

Growth, biofiltration and photosynthetic performance of Ulva spp. cultivated in fishpond effluents: An outdoor study

Summary: This study found that the seaweeds Ulva pseudorotundata and Ulva rigida can effectively remove nutrients, especially ammonium and nitrate, from wastewater. The growth rate and protein content of both seaweed species were higher when cultivated in 100% effluent concentration compared to 50%. These findings contribute to the improvement of seaweed growth and biofiltration capacity, as well as management practices in aquaculture effluent treatment systems.

Indicators for the determination of the status and trends of king's littleneck clam fishery (Ameghinomya antiqua, PP King, 1832) in Los Lagos Region, Chile: An integral sustainable approach

Eduardo Bustos, Hugo Robotham, Guillermo Rodriguez, Francisco Ther-Rios, Jorge Munoz, Lorenzo Andrade, Nancy Barahona, Alejandro Clement

Summary: This article proposes a method to integrate sustainable development indicators to assess the status of small-scale fisheries in developing countries and suggest corrective measures. By converting indicators into sustainability indices, this approach improves public communication. Applying this method to king's littleneck clam fisheries in Quellon, Chile, it is found that overfishing is occurring and management actions are necessary to increase sustainability levels.
