Objective To estimate the proportion of participants in clinical trials who understand different components of informed consent. Methods Relevant studies were identified by a systematic review of PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar and by manually reviewing reference lists for publications up to October 2013. A meta-analysis of study results was performed using a random-effects model to take account of heterogeneity. Findings The analysis included 103 studies evaluating 135 cohorts of participants. The pooled proportion of participants who understood components of informed consent was 75.8% for freedom to withdraw at any time, 74.7% for the nature of study, 74.7% for the voluntary nature of participation, 74.0% for potential benefits, 69.6% for the study's purpose, 67.0% for potential risks and side-effects, 66.2% for confidentiality, 64.1% for the availability of alternative treatment if withdrawn, 62.9% for knowing that treatments were being compared, 53.3% for placebo and 52.1% for randomization. Most participants, 62.4%, had no therapeutic misconceptions and 54.9% could name at least one risk. Subgroup and meta-regression analyses identified covariates, such as age, educational level, critical illness, the study phase and location, that significantly affected understanding and indicated that the proportion of participants who understood informed consent had not increased over 30 years. Conclusion The proportion of participants in clinical trials who understood different components of informed consent varied from 52.1% to 75.8%. Investigators could do more to help participants achieve a complete understanding.

Summary: Dengue encephalitis is a severe clinical presentation of dengue infection. During a dengue outbreak in Vietnam, two DENV-3 strains were isolated, one from a patient with dengue encephalitis and another from a patient with classical dengue fever. Genetic variation was observed between the strains, and the CSF-derived DENV-3 showed unique infectivity characteristics for human neuronal cells.

Summary: We have modified the terminal amino group of N-1-(7-chloroquinolin-4-yl) butane-1,4-diamine to synthesize a series of 7-chloro-4-aminoquinoline derivatives and evaluated their potential as anti-malarial and anti-viral agents. Some of these compounds showed promising anti-malarial effects against both chloroquine-sensitive and chloroquine-resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum. In addition, they were tested in vitro against influenza A virus (IAV) and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Compound 5h, which contained an N-mesityl thiourea group, exhibited significant anti-infectious effects against malaria, IAV, and SARS-CoV-2. These findings provide new insights for the discovery of drugs for malaria prevention and treatment, as well as virus co-infection.

Compound K: A systematic review of its anticancer properties and probable mechanisms

Dao Ngoc Hien Tam, Nguyen Hai Nam, Nguyen The Ky Cuong, Dang The Hung, Dang Thi Soa, Ahmad Altom, Linh Tran, Heba Elhadad, Nguyen Tien Huy

Summary: This study aimed to systematically review the anticancer effects of compound K (CK). Fifty-four articles were included in the review, and the results showed that CK had potential anticancer activity in in vitro and in vivo studies, inhibiting various cancer cell lines. In mice models, there was a significant decrease in tumor volume after CK treatment. CK could be a potential supplementary treatment in cancer chemotherapies, but further safety assessments and clinical trials are needed for drug development.

Evaluation of the Effectiveness of the Policy of Holding the Second Dose of Vaccination: Lessons from the Outbreak in Ho Chi Minh City

Vu Thi Thu Trang, Le Van Truong, Truong Van Dat, Randa Elsheikh, Nguyen Tuan Anh, Dang Xuan Thang, Vo Viet Thang, Abdelrahman M. Makram, Nguyen Tien Huy, Nagasaki University Collaborative

Summary: The study aimed to assess the impact of Ho Chi Minh City's policy to delay the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine on the equal provision of healthcare. The results showed that holding the second dose of the vaccine was associated with a lower risk of low oxygen saturation. Therefore, governments should consider adopting this approach for greater community benefit.

COVID-19 outbreak after 100 days without community transmission: Epidemiological analysis of factors associated with death

Nguyen Tran Minh Duc, Ali Ahmed-Fouad Abozaid, Le Van Truong, Nguyen Bao Hung, Dao Khanh Linh, Nguyen Hoang Dung, Teresa Pham Voong, Nguyen Tien Huy

Summary: This study retrospectively examined the incidence, distribution, and risk factors associated with death in the second wave of the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak in Danang, Vietnam. The results showed significant associations between age, quarantine measures, previous negative test results, and symptoms (such as shortness of breath and myalgia) with the risk of death. The successful implementation of quarantine measures by Vietnamese authorities was observed, but the virus still spread beyond the country's control. Adequate screening, social distancing, and proper care for the elderly and healthcare workers can help reduce the risk of future outbreaks.

Reemergence of Marburgvirus disease: Update on current control and prevention measures and review of the literature

Randa Elsheikh, Abdelrahman M. Makram, Hager Selim, Dung Nguyen, Thi Thu Thao Le, Van-Phu Tran, Sarah Abd Elaziz Khader, Nguyen Tien Huy

Summary: The first case of Marburgvirus disease (MVD) was reported in Germany and Serbia in 1967, and it has since become one of the most serious and deadly infectious diseases worldwide. MVD belongs to the family of Filoviridae and causes severe viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF) with a high case-fatality rate. Major risk factors for human infections include close contact with African fruit bats, MVD-infected non-human primates, and MVD-infected individuals. Currently, there is no vaccine or specific treatment for MVD, highlighting the urgency to address this disease.
